The island of Velloria stood like a jewel on the Grand Line.
Cobblestone streets wove through clusters of stalls and cozy shops, each adorned in deep scarlet, blush pink, and gleaming gold. Ribbons swayed from towering poles as flower petals drifted on the breeze, mixing with the scent of spiced sweets and fresh fruit. Laughter and music resonated through the festive town, where couples and friends strolled arm in arm, savoring the atmosphere.
Nami moved through the bustling crowd, her sharp gaze scanning heart-shaped trinkets and elaborate confections. Despite the island's romantic fervor, she remained unfazed, a wry smile playing on her lips. Love had a price, but for Nami, everything had a value—measured in Berry.
"A festival about romance," she mused, sidestepping a starry-eyed couple. "A profitable way to empty wallets."
Her fingers brushed the leather pouch at her hip, reassuring herself of the recent bounty it held. Yet, even with her pragmatic nature, she couldn't deny the festival's aesthetic charm. The townspeople had transformed their port into something whimsical. Ornate lanterns bobbed above the streets, casting flickering shadows on the cheerful crowd below. Children ran with colorful streamers, their laughter infectious.
Near a fountain adorned with carved cherubs spouting streams of pink-tinted water, performers juggled flaming batons, drawing gasps of awe. Vendors hawked everything from glittering trinkets to delicate pastries dusted in edible gold. The sheer variety of goods could make any skilled negotiator salivate.
"Now this is where opportunity lives," Nami thought, eyes narrowing as she assessed the scene. Festivals often led to chaos, and chaos bred profit. Perhaps a few lucrative trades could be made, leaving her richer and the seller none the wiser.
At a stall bedecked with garlands of rose quartz and polished sea glass, she paused, eyeing an elegantly crafted flower brooch—intricate metalwork shaped into a blooming camellia with delicate enamel petals and with a real rubis in its center. The vendor, an older woman with keen eyes, watched her carefully.
"For someone special?" the woman asked, a teasing lilt in her voice.
Nami smirked. "Maybe just myself."
She lifted the brooch for closer inspection. The craftsmanship was excellent, but the price would need a significant 'adjustment' to meet her standards.
The vendor chuckled knowingly. "Smart girl. Always treat yourself first."
Returning the brooch to its display, Nami continued down the street, her thoughts shifting between the sights around her and the island's peculiar fixation on romance. Sentimentality had its charm, but she had long since learned that words were cheap, and dreams of fairy tales rarely survived the seas. Love was a luxury—one that came second to survival.
Still, there was something undeniably heartwarming about the joy around her. Couples danced in impromptu circles, their faces alight with happiness, while older pairs strolled hand in hand, weathering the tide of festival-goers with serene smiles.
"Ridiculous… this army of blind Sanji," she muttered, though her tone lacked true malice. If nothing else, it was entertaining to watch.
Further down the promenade, her attention was drawn to a massive central stage where musicians played a lively tune, their instruments blending seamlessly with the island's jubilant energy. Dancers whirled in bright costumes, the fabric catching the light. A young woman with a shock of pink hair distributed flower crowns to bystanders, who accepted them with delighted laughter.
As she walked on, her mind drifted to the Going Merry, resting at the docks. The ship had carried them through thick and thin, but it was starting to show its limit. Sooner or later, they'd need to face the reality of its condition and find a way to fix their ship.
Further down the promenade, Nami's attention shifted to a massive stage where musicians played a lively tune, their melodies weaving seamlessly with the island's jubilant energy. Dancers twirled in vibrant costumes, their movements fluid and synchronized. A young woman with striking pink hair handed out flower crowns, laughter rippling through the crowd as bystanders accepted them with delight.
A determined child darted toward Nami, flower crown in hand. "Here! For you!" he chirped.
"No, thanks," she started, stepping back, but the boy was quicker. Before she could protest, delicate blossoms were settled atop her head.
The child grinned. "You look pretty!"
Caught off guard by the earnest compliment, Nami blinked. "Well, aren't you charming," she said, amusement creeping into her tone.
As the boy scampered away, she glimpsed her reflection in a shop window. The coral-hued blooms intertwined with green leaves actually suited her, she admitted begrudgingly. Her short orange hair framed her face, tousled slightly by the breeze. The deep purple top she wore, adorned with ruffled black trim, clung comfortably to her form, the thin straps leaving her shoulders bare as a white semi-long skirt swayed gently with her movements.
Shaking her head, she wandered toward a quieter path near the cliffs. The sea stretched endlessly before her, waves reflecting the warm hues of the sun. Long shadows danced over the water, and for a fleeting moment, Nami simply breathed, allowing herself to savor the view. The distant festival's noise was replaced by the rhythmic lapping of waves, a tranquil contrast to the bustling streets.
Music swelled again, a lively melody carrying through the crisp evening air. The crowd clapped along, their joy infectious. Nami's steps slowed as she observed, the festival's warmth seeping into her despite her earlier skepticism.
Her sharp eyes caught sight of a pickpocket weaving through the crowd, his movements practiced. She recognized the pattern—one she had once known all too well. Memories of Cocoyashi Village flickered before she dismissed them.
"Old habits die hard," she murmured, watching as the thief disappeared into the sea of people.
The festival unfolded in layers of sound and color, a living tapestry of resilience. People found joy despite uncertainty, much like she and her crew had learned to do through every adventure.
Laughter drifted on the wind, grounding her in the present. Nami straightened, her sharp instincts returning. The festival might be a temporary escape for some, but for her, it was a reminder that opportunities awaited those clever enough to seize them.
With renewed purpose, she turned back toward the heart of the celebration, ready to navigate its colorful chaos with the expertise of a seasoned navigator. Love might fill the air—but for Nami, it was just another day of business.
"Enjoy your festival, Velloria."
The bustling energy of the festival continued unabated as Nami made her way through a luxurious enclosure filled with glittering jewels and opulent displays. Everywhere she looked, gleaming treasures sparkled in the sunlight—tempting, tantalizing, and just begging for someone with her skillset to relieve them from their current owners. But before she could act on any impulsive ideas, a careful assessment was necessary. Her sharp eyes flicked from display to display, evaluating the security measures in place and mentally mapping potential escape routes.
"Too many guards here," she thought, her brow furrowing. "If things get messy, I'll just have to target the passersby instead. Plenty of wealthy fools walking around with loose purses today."
Her stride slowed as she approached a particularly enticing jewelry stall adorned with velvet-lined displays. A golden necklace caught her attention—its craftsmanship flawless, its value obvious. The way it shimmered under the light made her heart race with excitement, slowly calmed down by the looks of the guards around who indirectly warned her that they had their eye on her... not just for her attractive physique.
"This is really pretty," she murmured under her breath, reaching out to lift the necklace for closer inspection. The smooth, weighty metal glided between her fingers as a small smile curved her lips.
"Expensive diamand… Looks expensive enough to steal,", she mused, barely audible above the festival's clamor.. apart from one person.
"Steal what?"
"Gya!" Nami gasped, nearly dropping the necklace. Whipping around, she found herself face-to-face with Luffy, his wide grin stretching from ear to ear.
Nami jumped, nearly dropping the necklace. A familiar voice—cheerful and unmistakably Luffy's—had crept up behind her. Whirling around, his rubbery neck stretched unnervingly close to her shoulder as he peered at the item in her hand.
"That's not food, huh?" he quipped, his expression one of innocent curiosity.
Nami's pulse quickened, this time from irritation rather than excitement. "Don't sneak up on people like that!" she scolded, pushing him back slightly. Clearing her throat, she added, "It's nothing. I was just admiring the craftsmanship." Her tone was casual, dismissive. "What are you even doing here? Why aren't you at the Merry? I told you I will be fast !"
"Zoro got lost again," Luffy said cheerfully, as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
Nami closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Of course he is," she muttered under her breath. "That guy couldn't even find his way to the bathroom of the ship."
Her attempt to return her focus to the necklace was futile—Luffy's gaze followed hers, fixating on the jewelry she was subtly trying to downplay.
"You'll take it?" he asked bluntly, pointing at the gleaming accessory.
"Wha—no!" she stammered, fast. "It's not like I was planning to buy it..." She crossed her arms defensively. "It's ridiculously overpriced." she stammered, her pride refusing to admit how much she coveted the piece.
"Besides, yes I could if I wanted ! After all, I deserve a gift after all the work I do for the crew!" Her voice took on a teasing edge. "Not that I'm expecting anything from you all."
Luffy's simple nature prevented him from grasping her sarcasm. "You shoulda just said so! Misterrrr!" he called out enthusiastically, waving to the elegantly dressed shopkeeper.
Nami blinked, caught off guard. "Wait, what?! Shut up you idiot, you will..!"
Before she could finish, an elegant shopkeeper approached with a polished demeanor. "May I assist you?" he inquired smoothly.
Nami cleared her throat, pushing Luffy back a step and smoothed down her clothes. "How much is this lovely necklace?" she asked, adopting a flirtatious tone to mask her irritation.
"A lovely choice for a lovely lady," he said with a distinguished smile. "Special festival price—750,000 berries, my lady," the vendor responded smoothly.
Nami's composure faltered. "..W-what? 750,000?!" she exclaimed, disbelief evident in her voice. "That's ridiculous! No way is it worth that much!"
The vendor, undeterred, added, "For an additional fee, we can engrave a custom name onto the piece. The total would come to one million berries."
Her jaw dropped further. "Highway robbery! This is the biggest scam I've ever heard of!", her laughter was now light but unmistakably derisive.
The vendor's smiled faltered as her amusement lingered, though her gaze grew more thoughtful. Festivals like this were a microcosm of the world itself—a blend of genuine moments and opportunistic exploitation, all coexisting under a banner of celebration.
"I've bought entire collection of maps for less.", she snapped, her fingers itching with the temptation to swipe it just to spite the man.
One of her hand twitched toward her clima-tact, the urge to simply take the necklace and vanish simmering just below the surface.
Before she could act on that impulse, Luffy's voice cut through as he announced casually..
"I'll take it."
Nami froze, staring at her captain in disbelief. "You'll what?!"
The shopkeeper's smile broadened. "And what name shall I inscribe, sir?"
"Luffy." the captain declared with unflinching certainty.
"H-huh? In YOUR name?!" Nami sputtered, grabbing his collar once more to yanking him down to eye level. "Are you serious, you rubber-brained moron?! We're going to get spotted if anyone saw your wanted poster, as if you weren't already shady enough with your straw hat!"
Luffy blinked innocently, before pointing his finger to himself and laughing with pride.
"But..! A jewel with my name sound cool, don't you think ? Kishishishi!"
Her amber eyes blazed with exasperation. "You.. Ugh ! How can you just throw that much money like it's nothing ?!"
"Because you deserve it." he said simply, his grin unwavering.
Her grip slackened, and for a moment, she could only stare at him. The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard, softening her usual tough demeanor.
Looking away, she mumbled, "Even so… you shouldn't be wasting money like that, not for me or anyone else without thinking.."
But despite her words, a faint smile tugged at her lips. Luffy's simple kindness had a way of cutting through even her most guarded defenses.
Luffy simply laughed, oblivious to the intricacies of what had just transpired. The elegant shopkeeper took it all in stride, proceeding with the transaction as though eccentric pirate captains were a regular occurrence.
Nami crossed her arms, a huff of frustration escaping her lips as she turned away from the carefree rubber captain beside her. The orange-haired navigator refused to meet his gaze, determined to maintain a shred of dignity after having her plan for a quiet theft thoroughly derailed. "It's not cool! Who would want a necklace with your name on it?"
"You don't want it?" Luffy's head tilted in innocent confusion.
"I—I didn't say that!" Nami shot back, a flustered edge creeping into her voice. Her eyes flickered to the shimmering golden necklace still in the shopkeeper's grasp. "I just—you don't just—You—"
Words tangled on her tongue, refusing to cooperate. "Of course I want it! I already mentioned that I deserve a gift," she huffed, as though logic itself was on her side.
The elegant shopkeeper returned with the finished necklace, now engraved with Luffy's name inside. Nami's eyes darted toward it before she bit her lip to mask an uncharacteristic sense of bashfulness. "I can't believe you wasted your money on something so ridiculous," she muttered, gaze lingering on the intricate craftsmanship. The shine of the gold reflected faintly in her eyes, glinting in the sunlight as Nami ran her finger along the engraved name, a fleeting softness flashing across her expression before she masked it once more with a scoff.
"This better be the fanciest and most expensive necklace I'll ever own," she quipped. Her gaze shifted back to Luffy, a small, genuine smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Thanks.. Luffy."
"No big deal!" Luffy beamed, his carefree grin widening as he dumped a bulging bag of berries onto the counter without a second thought, spilling its contents—piles of neatly bound berry notes—onto the stall. The vendor's eyes widened, momentarily stunned by the impromptu fortune before swiftly gathering the payment, calmly counting the hefty sum. Nami gasped, her voice rising above the market stared at the mound of currency Luffy had just casually thrown away. "You… You didn't even keep some?"
As they stepped out of the elegant market, the realization dawned on her—the very bag Luffy had emptied was supposed to remain aboard the ship for Sanji's carefully budgeted provisions. A sigh of exasperation escaped her lips as she shot Luffy a glare.
"Do you have any idea what you just did? That was your food money!" Nami's voice carried both scorn and disbelief.
The weight of the situation settled hard as Luffy stopped move, standing dramatically as the shadow hided his expression. "How are we supposed to get food now?" she demanded, glaring at him. "Those berries were our savings for you!"
The rubber-brained captain's jaw dropped in exaggerated shock, his hands flying to his head. "WHAT?! THAT WAS FOR MY FOOD?! WHAT DO WE DO NOW, NAMI?!"
Nami dragged a hand down her face in exasperation. "Of course it was for your food, you glutton! Now you've spent everything. How many days are you going to starve because of your ridiculous impulsiveness?"
Without warning, Luffy collapsed theatrically at her feet, pressing his face into her leg and wailing loudly. "NAAAAMIII! I DON'T WANNA STAAARVE!"
Eyes widened in disbelief, Nami blinked down at the scene he was making—the scene that was attracting far too many curious onlookers. She groaned, resisting the urge to kick him off her. "Stop making a spectacle!" she hissed, dragging him up by his collar. "You're embarrassing us."
Even with her hand clamped over his mouth, his muffled cries persisted. They managed to escape the market under the weight of prying eyes and judgmental whispers.
On the crowded street, Nami sighed heavily, shaking her head. "You're taking responsibility for this mess. It's too late for regrets," she scolded, though warmth tugged at the corners of her mouth despite herself.
In her palm, the necklace gleamed under the afternoon sun, its polished surface reflecting memories she hadn't yet sorted through. Luffy might be a handful—no, he was a handful—but even a nuisance like him had his moments.
Clearing her throat, Nami shook off the thought. "Listen, today I'm in a good mood," she declared with mock sternness. "I don't usually offer this because it's still risky, but… we can gamble."
Luffy's eyes lit up with hope. "Gamble ? Really?"
"Yes," Nami confirmed, brushing past the sudden rush of nerves in her chest. "I'll win back the money you spent. I'm good at cards. Just stop whining."
Before she could blink, Luffy tackled her in a bone-crushing hug. "THANKS, NAMI! YOU'RE THE BEST!"
Staggering under his weight, Nami squealed, trying to maintain her balance. "Get off me, you idiot! You're going to knock me over!"
Despite her protests, her tone carried more fondness than frustration. "And if you lose?" he asked eagerly.
"That's not going to happen," she gave his shoulder a confident pat before pushing him away. "Let's go find a casino." Her smirk widened as she added, "I'll win your money back, Luffy. Just watch."
Luffy clenched his fists with excitement, punching the air. "Let's go, Nami!"
A determined glint in her eye, Nami nodded. "First stop—the casino."
The two companions quickly found the casino... Among the throng, Nami strode confidently beside Luffy, determination gleaming in her eyes as she mapped out her strategy.
"You're going to stay quiet," she commanded firmly, shooting a sharp glance at her companion. "You're too loud and will definitely cause a commotion. Don't be annoying and just wait behind me."
Luffy, unbothered by her scolding, grinned widely. "Got it! No one can stop you when money's on the line!"
A smirk tugged at the corners of her lips. "Damn right." Her pace quickened, confidence radiating from every step. The thought of reclaiming their money filled her with determination—and maybe a little thrill. "We'll get your berries back, and maybe I'll be swimming in them too," she teased, still not letting him completely off the hook.
As they neared the grand entrance to the casino, the noise intensified—laughter, cheers, and the clinking of chips weaving into an intoxicating symphony. The lavish establishment sparkled under chandeliers, its polished floors reflecting the kaleidoscope of colors from the games spread across the vast hall.
Nami's eyes flicked between the tables until they landed on one—a poker game already in session. "Perfect," she muttered, her gaze narrowing.
"I repeat," she warned, turning to Luffy with a stern expression as she stretched his ear, "you stay here and be quiet. I'm the best gambler on the crew, so watch and learn—but do not attract attention. You know what will happen if you mess this up, right?"
"With food as the goal?" He nodded earnestly. "I'll just watch."
Satisfied, Nami made her way to the table, the air thick with tension and anticipation. The players seated around her—grizzled veterans and sharp-eyed newcomers alike—barely acknowledged her as she settled into a vacant seat.
"Let's play," she declared, her voice steady and confident.
The cards were dealt, and Nami's gaze sharpened as she surveyed her hand. Calculating odds and reading her opponents came as naturally to her as navigating treacherous seas. One by one, rounds passed, and chips piled steadily in front of her. Each calculated move chipped away at her opponents' confidence.
Behind her, Luffy's innocent grin beamed through the growing crowd. "Nami! Nami! Nami! Ohohoho!" he chanted exuberantly.
"Thanks for the anthem," she muttered, sparing him a brief glance, "but shut up, please."
Despite the playful distraction, her focus remained razor-sharp. As the bets escalated, Nami moved to another table, more determined than ever. The stakes were higher now, the tension palpable. She examined her hand carefully, her brow furrowed in concentration.
Her opponents folded one after another until only a burly man with a weathered face remained. His steely eyes locked on hers as he matched her every move. The pot swelled to a staggering sum, but it still wasn't enough to recoup what Luffy had squandered.
Nami bit her lip, deliberating. Her fingers brushed the gold necklace resting in her palm—Luffy's name etched inside. The warm metal was a reminder of his well-meaning foolishness, but it also symbolized his trust.
"We can bet the necklace," she murmured under her breath, her voice barely audible.
Luffy's voice cut through the tension. "But… it made you happy, right?"
She closed her eyes, inhaling deeply. The conflicting emotions in her chest churned. It was more than a simple trinket—but priorities demanded sacrifice. "It's fine," she managed, keeping her tone steady. "I mean, it's just some necklace. I don't even need it."
Luffy's brow furrowed, his perceptive gaze uncharacteristically sharp. "Then why does your face say something else?"
Her eyes snapped open, surprise flickering in them. She was caught, yet stubbornness flared to life. "Don't be stupid," she huffed, though her grip on the necklace tightened. Maybe it was a scam... a mistake in buying it... but it was still a genuine gift.
Moments stretched into silence before she exhaled slowly. "Yeah," she admitted quietly. "It is something I like." Her voice softened, the vulnerability slipping through her defenses. "But you don't have money to eat. Survival first."
The tension cracked as Luffy's grin returned. He reached up, removing his cherished straw hat and gently placing it on her head. "Take it," he said earnestly. "It'll give you more luck. We can't lose!"
Nami's breath caught. The familiar warmth bloomed in her chest at his simple, yet profound gesture. Her brown eyes softened, reflecting the sincerity in his expression. Gripping the brim of the hat, she smiled despite herself.
"No turning back now," she mumbled.
Squaring her shoulders, Nami faced her opponent with renewed determination. The brim of Luffy's hat cast a shadow over her eyes, but her confident smirk remained visible. The next round commenced, cards dealt with precision. Her pulse steadied, each card played drawing her closer to victory.
"Ready," she declared. "Let's go."
As the final hand played out, the room seemed to hold its breath. Nami's keen instincts guided every decision, each move calculated with precision. The pot gleamed before her—a treasure she knew she would reclaim for their cause.
Luffy clapped his hands together excitedly. "We're gonna win, Nami!"
"Damn right," she replied, eyes gleaming. "We're winning this thing."
Some hours later.. The streets of the festival were still alive with bustling crowds and vibrant colors.
Nami stepped out of the casino, victorious and glowing with triumph. The weight of the berry-filled bag in Luffy's hands was testament to her skill. Her strides were confident, her spirits high. The golden necklace resting in her palm shimmered faintly under the soft glow of paper lanterns.
"I told you I had this," she declared with a wide grin, holding her own bag of winnings triumphantly.
Luffy, bouncing on his heels with excitement, raised a fist to the sky. "Hehe, you really are the Queen of Berries, Nami! All thanks to my lucky straw hat!"
She chuckled, the warmth of his praise reaching her heart. Carefully lifting the straw hat off her head, she gently placed it back onto Luffy's mop of black hair.
"Looks like I can always count on the captain's hat," she quipped with a playful smirk. "But yes, I am the Queen of Berries. The best and luckiest gambler out there!" Her voice brimmed with pride, chest puffed as if daring the universe to challenge her claim.
Luffy's grin stretched impossibly wide. "Yahoo! No more starving now! My stomach's saved!"
His joyous declaration made her laugh, the sound bright and free. The festival's energy pulsed around them, matching the infectious cheer between captain and navigator.
"That's right," she teased. "I've got enough here to feed you for days—maybe even keep that bottomless pit of yours satisfied for a bit."
He leaped into the air, pumping his fists. "Best thief in the whole world!"
Nami giggled, rolling her eyes fondly. "That's me," she admitted, eyes gleaming mischievously. "And thanks to this lucky day, I won us a lot more than we expected."
As Luffy danced in celebration, Nami couldn't help but feel a soft warmth spread through her chest. His joy was contagious, a reminder of why she cared so deeply for this carefree, reckless captain.
"Lucky for you, I'm here to keep you from going broke," she quirped, playfully tapping his head. "Otherwise, you'd waste every single berry you touch on snacks ages ago."
Luffy puffed out his cheeks in a mock pout. "Doesn't mean you're always right, even when you are!" He stuck out his tongue, prompting Nami to respond with a teasing laugh.
Nami laughed at his absurd logic, mirroring his playful gesture by sticking her tongue back out. "As always, that makes no sense!"
Their playful banter carried them down the bustling street lined with colorful stalls, the sweet and savory aroma of festival food wafting around them. Laughter and music filled the warm evening air, punctuated by bursts of cheers from games and performances.
Nami knew that when she got back to the boat, Sanji would surely have stocked up and prepared a succulent buffet for them.
Still.. surely surrounded and indirectly influenced by the atmosphere of the festival around her, the young navigator wanted to be generous towards her captain and offer something this time.
"So," she said after a pause, glancing at Luffy, "you want to grab some food before we head back to the ship?"
His stomach answered before he did, a loud grumble echoing over the crowd.
"Definitely! We earned it!" His eyes sparkled with excitement.
Nami shook her head, amused. "Of course, your stomach always answers first." Her tone was exasperated but affectionate.
Her eyes caught a nearby restaurant's sign boasting a "Festival Discount." A glint of mischief sparkled in her gaze. "Oh, now this is perfect."
Grabbing Luffy's arm, she tugged him forward with sudden determination. "Come on, Captain. It's discount food day—we can't miss this!"
Luffy's eyes widened in awe as he looked around, drool forming at the corners of his mouth. "Discount food?! Where?! Where?!"
"Stop drooling, idiot! You're being gross!" Nami laughed, her voice light with amusement as she dragged him along.
Ahead, a vibrant restaurant bustled with diners and mouthwatering scents. The glow from lanterns hung over its entrance, promising a feast worthy of celebration.
"Here it is!" Nami beamed. "Food! Food! Food!"
Luffy's excitement matched hers, and for a rare moment, Nami allowed herself to revel in the unrestrained innocence of the moment, her heart light and laughter ringing as the festival night unfolded around them.
Nami's eyes sparkled with excitement as she slowed, dragging Luffy along by the arm until they stood before the restaurant's conditions displayed on a bright red board:
'50% Discount for Couples Today Only! Proof of Relationship Required.'
Her heart skipped slightly, the giddiness from a potential bargain abruptly tempered by the fine print. "W-What?" she whispered, scanning the words again to ensure she hadn't misread. Her brown eyes widened as realization sank in. Slowly, she glanced over her shoulder to where Luffy stood, mouth agape and drooling as the rich scents of food wafted toward them.
No chance of success with Luffy.
"This discount," she started, her voice tinged with nerves, "is for couples only." she stated quietly.
"No problem." Luffy finished absentmindedly, still captivated by the mouthwatering aroma. "We're like a couple of friends!"
She laughed nervously, her fingers twitching as she resisted the urge to smack some sense into his thick head. "That's not what the sign means, you idiot. Romantic couples. Dates. People who are—" she muttered. "We don't qualify."
Then, Luffy walks back from the restaurant, slightly disappointed, his arms behind head. "Too bad! That would've saved you a bunch of berries." He didn't notice his rubbery arm stretching absurdly as Nami grabbed suddenly it to stop him.
"Wait!" she blurted, tightening her grip. Determination flickered in her gaze. Her pride as a savvy navigator—and a relentless protector of her wallet—refused to let this opportunity slip away. The alternative would be a bill catastrophic enough to bankrupt even her recent poker winnings.
Nami squared her shoulders, pushing aside the flush creeping up her neck. "Forget what I said. Let's just… pretend."
Luffy blinked, turning back to face her. "Pretend what?"
She sighed. "That we're a couple."
His innocent face remained blank for a beat before a grin split across his features. "Okay! But how're we supposed to prove it?"
Her mind raced, her gaze darting from the sign to the couples seated cozily inside. The sight of intertwined hands and sweet smiles made her chest tighten with a mix of embarrassment and resolve. Glancing down at their linked arms, she swallowed her nerves.
"We're already holding hands," she pointed out, voice faltering slightly. "Just keep doing that and… act like a boyfriend. Be happy, okay?"
"Got it! Happy for food—easy!" he beamed enthusiastically.
"Food matters," she muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes. "Fine, just let me do the talking. And please—don't do anything stupid." Her tone softened into a warning as they approached the entrance.
"I'll just smile a lot!" he declared confidently.
"Yeah, yeah.. Smile and shine." she grumbled, steeling herself.
They reached the host's podium, where a sharply dressed man stood poised to greet guests. Nami tugged Luffy closer, forcing a bright, albeit strained, smile onto her face. Luffy, true to his word, stretched his mouth into a comically exaggerated grin that nearly split his face in two.
The host blinked, visibly taken aback by the cartoonish expression. Nami fought the urge to bury her face in her hands, instead gripping Luffy's arm tighter and leaning subtly into his side to sell the act.
"Sweetheart," she cooed through gritted teeth, her voice sugary but taut, "let's get that table, okay?"
Luffy's grin grew impossibly wider. "Yeah! Table for food!"
Nami maintained a composed facade, gripping Luffy's arm tighter as they stood before the host, her mind resolute despite the absurdity of their situation. The warm glow of the restaurant's ambiance contrasted sharply with the growing heat in her cheeks, but the navigator's determination remained unshaken.
"I heard you're offering a discount for couples?" Nami's tone was sweet, almost saccharine, as she put on an affectionate act. Her voice had a practiced cheerfulness layered over her internal tension. The soft squeeze of Luffy's arm added to the illusion as she struggled to suppress her embarrassment.
For the discount, she reminded herself, it's all for the berries.
The host, visibly unnerved by Luffy's impossibly exaggerated grin, preferred dealing with her. The elegant man cleared his throat, clearly perplexed but maintaining professionalism. "That's right," he confirmed, glancing between them cautiously. "We do have tables available on the exterior—would that be suitable?"
"That sounds perfect!" she responded, forcing a cheerful note into her voice. Her lips curved into a convincing smile, though her insides knotted at the absurdity of it all.
Keep it together.
The host nodded and gestured toward the seating area. "Just one thing—proof of your relationship is required for the discount."
Nami's heart skipped a beat, but outwardly, she remained poised. "Proof?" Her voice was steady, though the word caught slightly in her throat. She glanced at their intertwined hands, mind racing.
"We're, uh… newly engaged!" she lied smoothly, her lips curling into what she hoped was a confident smile. Another squeeze of Luffy's arm punctuated the declaration. "Completely in love. Right, darling?" Her eyes flicked upward, a silent plea behind her gaze.
Luffy's absurdly stretched grin remained even more grotesque. "Yeay, I'm happy."
The host's skeptical expression deepened. Nami felt the blush creep up her neck, panic rising as the charade threatened to unravel. "He's always like this," she laughed awkwardly, brushing it off. "Super enthusiastic about the little things, you know?" Her heart raced as the host's doubt lingered.
"Sure…" The host hesitated. "But I'll still need something more concrete." he hinted with a raised brow.
Nami's pulse spiked. Her throat tightened, and sweat prickled at the back of her neck. This is ridiculous! The discount was starting to feel like a dangerous gamble, yet there was no turning back now. Her pride—and her wallet—demanded commitment.
Her mind whirred frantically. She had already calculated the price slash down to the last beli—this was supposed to be an easy, strategic negotiation. But now? Now she was teetering on the edge of financial ruin. The idea of paying full price burned worse than sea salt in an open wound. It was an affront to everything she stood for!
Damn it, if this is what it takes to secure that discount...
"Something more concrete, huh?" Her voice was strained as she forced herself to remain calm. Desperation edged her resolve. Her gaze darted between the host and Luffy before settling decisively on her captain. There's no way around this.
Before rational thought could intervene, Nami acted. Steeling herself, she reached up and pulled Luffy closer, pressing her lips to his in a sudden, fervent kiss. Her face ignited with warmth as the intensity of her act deepened. Lips melded, her breath hitched, and the closeness was far more overwhelming than anticipated. Her tongue grazed his, igniting an electric tension that contradicted every ounce of common sense she prided herself on.
Luffy, initially stiff in surprise, softened into the unfamiliar sensation. His usual wide-eyed innocence muddled into stunned bewilderment as he tried to process what was happening, his mind caught between confusion and curiosity.
Even the host, speechless, blinked at the unexpected display. The sheer intensity of the moment left him visibly flustered.
When Nami finally pulled back, her breath was uneven, her heart racing wildly. Her eyes met the host's, a flicker of triumph lighting her gaze despite the flush warming her skin. "Would friends kiss like that?" she challenged breathlessly, willing the host to drop any remaining suspicion.
The man cleared his throat awkwardly, his face tinged with embarrassment. "N-No, I guess. I, uh, I believe you… Please, follow me." He gestured quickly toward an empty table.
As they walked, Nami kept a firm grip on Luffy's arm, though her thoughts reeled.
She knew that a kiss wouldn't matter to Luffy... On the other hand, she prayed none of their crewmates had witnessed the spectacle. Her mind raced with the impossibility of explaining away what had just transpired—especially to herself.
Luffy muttered, his usual carefree demeanor momentarily shaken. "Am I supposed to say I'm happy now?" His voice carried genuine confusion.
"Just—just don't talk about it!" Nami hissed under her breath, her face still flushed by shame. "It's done. We got the table, okay?"
"Okay, good job Nami!" His voice brightened instantly, his earlier bewilderment fading.
Despite her lingering embarrassment, Nami allowed herself a relieved sigh as they sat down across Luffy. The host's retreat assured them privacy, and with the ordeal behind them, she could focus on the prize—saving money... but at what cost?
Still, as she glanced across the table at Luffy's goofy expression, a strange warmth lingered in her chest. She shoved it aside resolutely. It's just about the discount, she reminded herself firmly. Nothing more.
Even if her heart whispered otherwise.
Meanwhile, at a bar tucked on the opposite side of the festival square, Zoro sat nursing a bottle of sake, the cool night breeze whispering past him. His arms rested lazily against the counter as he enjoyed the simple solitude—until his gaze wandered across the way to the restaurant's open-air seating.
His one visible eye narrowed slightly as he caught sight of the scene that had just unfolded. Nami. Luffy. A kiss.
He blinked.
Slowly, deliberately, he poured himself another cup of sake, watching as the two leave the room, Luffy already back to grinning as if nothing had happened. Meanwhile, Nami looked somewhere between victorious and horrified, though she masked it well.
Zoro exhaled, swirling the drink in his cup before downing it in one go.
"Huh," he muttered, placing the cup down with a soft clink. "I think I may be too drunk for today."
And with that, he reached for the bottle again.
The soft glow of festival lanterns filtered through the open windows of the restaurant, casting a warm light over polished wooden tables laden with fragrant dishes. The gentle hum of laughter and conversation floated through the air, mingling with the mouthwatering scent of grilled seafood and sizzling skewers. Nami's fingers brushed against her temple as she tried to suppress a smile that threatened to break free.
Reaching out, she patted his rubbery cheek with a light touch. "You need to tone down that absurd smile, Luffy," she whispered, voice low but teasing. "They'll start wondering if we're really in love."
Despite her best effort to remain composed, a soft laugh escaped her lips. After all they'd just pulled off—the kiss, the whole act—he still wore that exaggerated grin as if nothing had happened. His carefree nature was maddening, to feel the same as ever to something who could make crazy any man.
"You're such a kid," she teased, shaking her head in disbelief. But enough was enough. Her tone turned mock-threatening. "Seriously, act Luffy now."
Luffy blinked, his features slipping back to something resembling his usual expression, albeit with a lingering hint of confusion. "Wouldn't it be easier to just go to another restaurant?" he asked, tilting his head.
Nami's brow arched as she fixed him with a determined look. "We already got here, and I secured the discount." Her voice was firm, though softened by amusement. "I'm not about to waste that effort. We just have to keep up the couple act until the food's done, okay?"
Her lips curled into a small smirk as she added playfully, "Besides, I bet the food here will be great. It'll be worth it." She reached for his arm, giving it a gentle tug. "Just sit down, eat, and be normal. Can you handle that?"
Luffy grinned, flexing his fists with a sudden burst of enthusiasm. "Since I did so well, I get to order all the dishes I want, right?"
A snort escaped her before she could stop it, a fond laugh lingering at the edges of her voice. "You would say that," she muttered, rolling her eyes. "If I didn't stop you, you'd eat the whole menu and still be hungry." Her gaze softened despite herself. "But fine—go ahead. Just keep acting the part."
Her fingers fidgeted absently against the table, though her mind remained stubbornly replaying the kiss they'd shared earlier. The sensation lingered far longer than she'd expected, a mix of guilt and disbelief tingling at the edges of her composure.
She tried to avoid looking directly at him after that.. She may have felt uneasy for the last act done to her oblivious friend.. even if it was only for a good reason.
Soon, steaming plates of food arrived, filling the table with a colorful spread. Platters of sizzling sea king skewers, fluffy golden takoyaki dripping in rich sauce, and deep-fried kraken rings stacked high alongside bowls of spicy clam chowder, sat alongside fluffy bread rolls still warm from the oven. Juicy roasted chicken, slathered in tangy sauce, was placed at the center—Luffy's eyes immediately locked onto it with unrestrained glee.
The two dug in with gusto, the tension of their earlier act fading beneath the comfort of a hearty meal. For a brief moment, Nami let herself relax, enjoying the savory bites and the sense of accomplishment in her bargain victory.
Her peace shattered when Luffy, cheeks puffed out like a hamster, spoke mid-chew. "W-hay, Momi! Yo shims in a cood mood toudah!"
Nami grimaced, her initial horror giving way to reluctant amusement at the sight of his chipmunk-like expression. "Don't talk with your mouth full, or people are going to think I'm babysitting a kid," she scolded. Still, a quiet part of her almost found it cute—almost. "Though you're right. I am in a decent mood."
Memories flickered through her mind: The strange gift of a necklace he'd bought her out of nowhere, the casino escapade, and of course, the ridiculous fake kiss. It had been an absurd day, but somehow... it was fun too.
Luffy swallowed and grinned again. "So, why's there a discount for couples here, anyway? What's so special today?"
She leaned closer, lowering her voice to avoid drawing attention. "It's this island's festival," she explained. "It's all about celebrating love, companionship, or whatever. That's why we got the 50% discount—it's literally the whole point." Her tone carried a hint of disbelief at the absurdity of it.
"Ohhh," Luffy hummed thoughtfully, looking around the bustling space as if trying to make sense of it all. His expression grew oddly contemplative, his brow furrowing in rare concentration.
Nami quirked a brow. "What are you thinking about?" she asked warily.
"Dunno yet," he answered, his carefree tone returning. "But food's really good, huh?"
She laughed softly despite herself, shaking her head. "Yeah, I guess it is." Her voice dipped quieter as she added under her breath, "Only you could simplify things that much."
Still, as much as Nami fought it, she couldn't help but admit that despite the chaos and absurdity, this odd day with Luffy left her feeling lighter—Her heart pounded a bit at the fact it felt like a date.. before cursing herself internally for imagining something too ridiculous, even more with her captain like partner...
Nami leaned back in her chair, orange hair catching the light as she sighed in mock exasperation.
"What are you plotting, rubber boy?" Her voice carried a teasing edge, curiosity piqued by Luffy's rare expression of thoughtfulness.
The carefree captain, known more for impulsive grins than silent contemplation, suddenly shoved one of his plates toward the table's center. His reluctance was palpable—sharing food was an act so against his nature that it bordered on heroic sacrifice.
"If today's all about this lovey-dovey festival stuff," Luffy declared with stubborn resolve, "then let's share a meal."
Nami blinked, caught off guard by the uncharacteristic offer. "Share?" Her brow arched, lips parting in surprise as she searched his face for confirmation. But Luffy was serious.
Her heart softened at the sight, recognizing the weight of his gesture. For someone who lived by the motto "Pirates just eat, heroes share," this was no small concession. And while Luffy often claimed not to be a hero, Nami knew better. He was one in his own chaotic way—though she'd not admit it aloud.
"Are you really suggesting we share a meal, Captain?" Her voice was gently teasing, though touched by genuine warmth.
His rubbery grin widened. "Yep. What's the big deal?"
The navigator's lips curved into a smile, appreciating the peculiar charm of the moment. Even if it was just for the sake of blending into the festival atmosphere, the thought behind it warmed her.
"You're always full of surprises," she murmured, eyeing the plate he'd offered. Her amusement bubbled up when she realized the dish—vegetable spaghetti. "Figures you'd pick the one with no meat to sacrifice. Convenient." She reached for a fork, her lips curved in a warm chuckles "Still, I won't complain. Thanks, Luffy."
They began eating together, an unusual yet oddly comfortable scene unfolding between them. Nami twirled a forkful of spaghetti and took a bite, savoring the subtle flavors. Across from her, Luffy attacked the noodles with characteristic enthusiasm, slurping noisily with a gleeful chuckle.
Despite herself, Nami laughed softly at his antics. Their supposed couple act had taken a bizarre yet lighthearted turn. But before she could settle into the moment, fate—or Luffy's insatiable hunger—conspired against her.
A stray noodle clung stubbornly between them, neither letting go as they chewed on opposite ends. Nami froze, eyes wide as realization dawned. The strand of spaghetti stretched taut between their lips, creating a ridiculous moment. Her heart raced, the absurdity of the situation colliding with an unexpected flutter in her chest.
"Eep, w-wait!" she whispered urgently, but the moment had already escalated. Her gaze locked with Luffy's across the table, their lips nearly brushing as the single stubborn noodle tethered them together.
"You're ruining the noodle," she muttered, half to herself.
Luffy frowned in challenge. "Wanna battle for it, Nami?"
Her lips twitched despite herself, the absurdity disarming her usual composure. She shook her head with a sigh. "Of course you'd battle, even for a noodle." Her chuckle softened the scolding tone. "Fine, but no hands—only mouths."
A mischievous gleam lit her eyes as she leaned in, determined to win this strange food war. Nami gripped her end of the noodle with renewed resolve, tugging gently yet firmly. Their faces hovered closer.. To believe that his stupidity is infecting her now... However, she favored that over the serious and romantic atmosphere at the tables around them.
"You won't win," she taunted, eyes sparking with defiance.
"Oh, maybe," Luffy shot back between slurps, "but probably not!" With a final exaggerated pull of his tongue, he stretched the noodle past its limit, swallowing the entire length—including the portion still between Nami's lips.
Her breath hitched as the sudden motion brought their mouths into brief contact. A jolt of surprise left her momentarily stunned, lips tingling from both the unexpected touch and lingering sauce.
The warmth. The sauce. The sheer stupidity of what had just happened.
Luffy swallowed triumphantly, oblivious to the chaos he'd just caused.
"Hey!" Nami gasped, face flushed as she pulled back. "That's cheating!"
Luffy grinned smugly, stretching his tongue in mock victory. "How can you think you'd win against your captain in a noodle battle? Beeeh!"
She glared, though the fire in her eyes was tempered by reluctant amusement. "You cheated! Using your rubber powers is a dirty trick, Luffy!"
"It's not cheating," he argued with a chuckle. "You're always saying pirates do whatever it takes to win, right?"
Nami huffed, feigning annoyance, though a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Fine, fine. But next time, keep your rubber powers out of it, got it?"
"Sore loser~!" Luffy beamed, seemingly unaware of the lingering tension.
As the navigator returned her focus to the meal, her lips still tingled—not just from the sauce, but from the fleeting moment she'd shared with her unpredictable captain. Though she tried to dismiss the feeling, a warmth remained, one that no amount of stubborn denial could entirely erase.
At their table, however, the atmosphere remained unique. Luffy dove back into his other dishes, his unrestrained appetite shocking nearby diners who gawked at the table's unusual display. Plates vanished rapidly before his seemingly bottomless hunger.
Nami, however, found herself uncharacteristically distracted, the memory of their ridiculous "battle" replaying in her mind. Shaking her head, she forced herself to focus back on her meal—ignoring the faint, inexplicable tingle that refused to fade.
Eyes from nearby tables flicked toward them—some amused, others speculative. Her gaze swept the room, catching couples mimicking their earlier "spaghetti-sharing moment." Nami's face burned at the implication. To anyone watching, they must appear like a romantic pair caught in the charm of the festival.
Determined to redirect the situation, she turned to Luffy, a sweet smile plastered on her face. "So, Luffy," she began, voice laced with exaggerated warmth.
He glanced up mid-chew, grinning broadly. "Mmh? What?"
She leaned in slightly, pretending interest. "I was wondering... any plans after this meal? Or are you just planning to get hungry again ?" Her tone held teasing affection as her heart raced beneath the practiced calm.
"You mean you're not gonna bug me about heading back to the ship after dessert?" he asked, scratching his head in playful disbelief.
Feigning casualness, Nami waved her hand dismissively. "Not yet. I'm thinking I might actually enjoy the festival a little longer." Her voice softened. "No rush to get back, right? I don't mind leaving the rest of the crew on their own for a hour."
A wide grin spread across Luffy's face. "Don't mind at all with you, Nami!"
Warmth blossomed in her chest at his easy reply, but she masked it behind a confident smile. Their act to fool the onlookers might have been convincing, yet something about his genuine responses made her wonder if she wasn't acting quite as much as she thought.
"Sounds good," she concluded, finishing her last bite. "We'll figure out the rest after dessert."
Later that night.. The cool evening air carried the faint scent of salt from the nearby ocean as Nami and Luffy stepped out of the bustling restaurant. The festival lights danced off the gentle waves of the sea, their reflection shimmering like tiny lanterns floating in the distance.
Nami's chest felt warm from both the meal and the company. Walking beside Luffy, she let her usual fast pace slow to a leisurely stroll. The night's calm felt refreshing, contrasting sharply with the earlier noise and energy of the festival.
"I didn't even realize it got so late," she murmured, glancing up at the glittering sky. Her lips curved into a soft smile. "I guess I lost track of time."
Luffy, his hands clasped behind his head, continued walking without a care in the world. "Same! But it was fun, huh?"
A quiet chuckle escaped her lips. "Yeah… kind of," she admitted, surprising herself with the admission. The warm glow from lanterns and distant laughter created a serene backdrop for their walk. For once, Nami found herself content simply strolling beside him.
"You know," she began thoughtfully, "I didn't expect today to be any fun." Her gaze flicked toward Luffy's carefree expression. "Even more when I figured pretending to be a couple would be annoying or end in disaster. But… I actually had a good time."
Luffy grinned without missing a beat. "Weird but fun, right? You're welcome, by the way! And thanks for paying for the food, Nami!"
Her fond smile faltered into a scowl. "Don't get used to it."
He laughed heartily. "Let me dream ! Kishishishi!"
Nami sighed, though amusement sparkled in her brown eyes. "I won't feel any pity next time.." she teased, nudging his arm. "I will use the money from your savings, festival or not."
They walked on in companionable silence until Nami glanced upward at the sky, moonlight illuminating her features. "It really is a beautiful night," she mused softly. Her gaze drifted toward the town lights reflecting off the water's surface. "And we even succeed to get a discount."
Luffy's laugh rang out once more. "You'll do anything to save a few berries, huh?"
She grinned proudly, folding her arms with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Damn right. Money's money, Captain."
Their laughter mingled with the ocean breeze as they continued down the quiet path, a shared warmth lingering between them long.
Nami's heart still beat faster than she cared to admit. The memory of their playful charade at the restaurant lingered—her chest tightening slightly at the absurdity of it all. Flustered? No, not exactly. But something about the way Luffy dove headfirst into their little act without hesitation stayed with her.
"That really was something I don't do often," she remarked, brushing stray hair from her face. "I'm just glad it worked." Her voice held a mix of amusement and self-satisfaction, though a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
Luffy laughed, his carefree voice breaking through the tranquil night. "I'm even more surprised it didn't go wrong! I didn't know what I was doing!" His honesty was as blunt as ever, and it coaxed a genuine laugh from her.
"That restaurant owner must've been a fool," she added with a smirk. "It was obvious we weren't a couple. Though, I guess I'm pretty good at acting."
Her eyes lifted to the heavens, drawn by the beauty of the stars twinkling against the dark expanse. "Nights like this are something special. It's like the stars are showing off tonight," she mused, her voice softer now.
Luffy followed her gaze, his expression unreadable but oddly serene. "You're right," he agreed simply.
"I spend so much time focused on navigation or planning our next move," Nami admitted, her tone thoughtful. "I don't stop to just… look at the night sky for its own sake." She took a steadying breath, her chest rising and falling in time with the gentle rhythm of the sea. "I could stay out here all night just staring at the stars…"
Before she could finish her thought, Luffy's arm looped around her shoulders in a friendly, impulsive gesture. With a grin, he spun her lightly back to face him. "Hey, don't forget your captain's here! No need to rush back to the ship tonight. You can stare at the stars as long as you want!"
His exuberance caught her off guard, and for a moment, she simply stared at him before chuckling under her breath. "If it's a captain's order…" she teased, lifting her gaze around.
Moments passed in comfortable silence, only broken by the distant rustle of waves and the occasional creak of festival stalls closing for the night. The peacefulness felt rare—precious, even.
"You know," she murmured thoughtfully, "we don't get moments like this often. Maybe we should treasure them more."
Luffy tilted his head, his straw hat shadowing part of his face. "You mean moments without chaos?"
She laughed lightly. "Exactly. We're pirates, after all. We don't get many quiet moments just to be together and enjoy things."
Grinning, she cast him a sidelong glance. "I guess I should make the most of this rare peace—especially with you, Captain Chaos."
"I dunno what you're talking about," Luffy said, his voice filled with playful innocence.
She rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a laugh. Time alone with Luffy never stayed quiet for long, yet tonight felt different—calmer, almost serene.
"I'm enjoying it while it lasts," she admitted softly, letting the quiet settle between them once more. They stood together under the starlight, simply existing in the rare tranquility. Nami felt her mind finally quiet, the worries and complexities of their journey momentarily fading.
After a long pause, she broke the silence. "Luffy…" Her voice held a hint of curiosity. "Do you believe in destiny?"
"Huh?" He blinked, turning to look at her. "Why're you asking that, Nami?"
She hesitated, choosing her words carefully. "I was just thinking about our journey so far—the way we met, the crew, everything we've been through together. It makes me wonder… was it all meant to happen?"
Her fingers absently traced the railing, the memory of another sky, another impossible journey tugging at her mind. "Think about it… We set sail chasing a myth. An island in the sky, Luffy. People called it foolish—impossible—but we still found it. And when we got there, we should have all died." A dry laugh left her lips. "Eneru was untouchable, a god with the power to wipe us out in an instant… but you, of all people, just happened to be made of rubber. The one thing that could fight him."
She turned to face him fully, her gaze searching. "If that wasn't fate, then what was it?"
Luffy pondered her words, scratching the back of his head. "Destiny, huh?" His brow furrowed for a moment before clearing. "I don't really think about stuff like that. I just believe in doing what I wanna do and enjoying it."
His voice took on a determined edge. "But maybe karma exist. Doesn't mean someone else is deciding it for us, though."
The conviction in his gaze startled her. "We make our own choices," he continued firmly, "and we live with 'em. No one's pulling the strings on my life."
For a moment, Nami stood stunned. Despite his carefree nature, his words carried an unexpected weight—philosophical even. Her lips parted slightly, but no words came immediately.
"That's… surprisingly deep coming from you," she finally managed, a teasing lilt in her voice to mask her genuine surprise.
"Hoy!" Luffy pouted in protest.
She laughed softly, shaking her head. "I'm just messing with you. You're an idiot, but that was actually smart."
His expression brightened instantly, the brief offense forgotten. "Well, I might be an idiot, but I don't pretend to be someone else just for a discount!" he shot back triumphantly.
Nami shook her head, a grin tugging at her lips. "Yeah, yeah," she retorted playfully. "Still, you're reckless. But…" Her voice softened. "I love you anyway, even if you're making me live in hell like Navigator."
"Too late for quitting the boat, Nami!" Luffy teased, his usual carefree grin firmly in place. "You're stuck with us now!"
A laugh slipped past her lips, light but genuine. Then, after a brief pause, her tone softened. "Hey, Luffy?"
He blinked, tilting his head curiously. "Hmm?"
"What do you think would've happened… if our paths hadn't crossed?" Her voice carried a rare seriousness, laced with curiosity and introspection. Her amber eyes flicked to him, reflecting a quiet sincerity as she awaited his answer.
"You mean if I didn't meet you with Buggy?" His grin widened mischievously. "Or when I punched Arlong real hard?"
"Both." Her gaze sharpened slightly. "But mostly the latter."
The weight of those memories hung in the air between them—memories of battles fought, bonds forged, and lives changed forever. Nami's voice dropped, tinged with reverence. "That was a turning point. If you hadn't saved us… if you hadn't brought me into the crew…" She hesitated, her breath catching slightly. "I wouldn't be here right now."
Luffy's grin softened, turning into something gentler, warmer. "And I wouldn't have done half the things I've done without you and everyone else." His expression brightened with conviction. "Maybe things would be different in some other world, but I'm happy we're living in this one!"
A smile curved her lips, genuine and heartfelt. "Yeah… I can't imagine it any other way either. I'm glad you're here—here and now. Everyone changed my life… You saved me from navigating into despair. I won't be able to breathe freely this fresh air right now.. or even worse."
Luffy's brow furrowed briefly, thoughtful. "Saving you, sure. But what's more amazing is all you went through before we met. That was the real hard part." His hand ruffled her hair in a gesture both teasing and affectionate. "You did great."
The simple praise struck a chord, bringing warmth to her chest. Nami met his gaze, her smile bright yet earnest. "Thank you.." Her voice held no trace of its usual edge, just quiet gratitude. "Luffy.."
She faltered for a moment, emotions catching her off guard, before blinking away the moisture gathering in her eyes. The Cosmic jewels gleamed overhead, serene and unbothered by the weight of human feelings. She drew a calming breath, steadying herself before turning to her captain once more.
"I wouldn't want to live in a world where I never met you.", she murmured, her voice carrying a mix of disbelief and wonder.
In the dim light, a faint blush brushed her cheeks, though the night shielded her vulnerability. Luffy glanced at her, surprised by the rare display of sentimentality of his navigator. His grin returned—bright, honest, and unwavering. "Yeah! Me too!"
A laugh bubbled from her throat, soft but full of affection. It wasn't often she allowed herself to be this open, but tonight felt different. Luffy's unwavering presence made it easier.
"I wonder what the future holds for us…" Her words were tinged with both excitement and uncertainty. "It's been a wild ride already, and we're not far from some of our biggest goals."
"We will be granted of more fun adventures obviously!" Luffy agreed, his gaze drifting upward.
Nami followed his line of sight, the celestial expanse mirroring the vast unknown that awaited them. Despite the challenges ahead, a rare peace settled over her. "You know," she murmured, almost to herself, "I think fate brought us together. Destiny or whatever you want to call it—it led us here."
"Fate?" Luffy echoed, puzzled but intrigued. "You believe in that stuff?"
"I never used to," she admitted, her rational side momentarily quieted. "But this journey—everything we've faced, everything that brought us together—it feels like it was meant to be."
She turned to him, their eyes meeting in a moment of mutual understanding. "We have something special, all of us. We were meant to find each other. And I believe we'll achieve what we set out to do."
Luffy smirked, his eyes gleaming with determination. "Of course we will!"
The confidence in his voice anchored her resolve. Nami let herself bask in the serenity of the moment, leaning subtly against his shoulder. Her usual guarded demeanor softened, replaced by a quiet contentment she rarely displayed. Luffy didn't seem to mind, though surprise flickered briefly in his gaze before he relaxed into the moment.
Above them, the Celestial sentriess continued their silent watch, shimmering like scattered gems across the dark expanse of sky, as the sea stretched endlessly beyond the horizon. Their distant light, cool and constant, painted a serene canvas above the quiet night, like fragments of dreams scattered across the heavens.
Nami closed her eyes briefly, letting the stillness envelop her. Her fingers brushed against Luffy's, a subconscious gesture of connection, unnoticed by either of them at first.
Nami's gaze lingered upward, lost in thought as the world seemed to hold its breath.
"They always look so close, don't they?" Her voice was soft, almost wistful. "Like if you tried hard enough, you could reach out and touch them…"
Luffy's wide grin spread, mischief flickering in his eyes. "When I was a kid, I did try! I stretched my arms over and over, thinking if I trained hard enough with my Devil Fruit powers, I could reach the moon someday! Wanna see me try now?"
The absurdity of his claim made her laugh—a bright, genuine sound that melted into a softer smile. "No need for that." Her gaze flicked back to the horizon. "I meant… more figuratively."
She paused, "Like how it feels sometimes with our dreams... They seem so close, just within reach, but no matter how far you stretch, they're still so far away." Her voice grew quieter, tinged with rare vulnerability. "Maybe our goals are like that sometimes. We want them so badly, but it's not always that simple."
For a moment, Luffy tilted his head thoughtfully, his usually carefree demeanor softened by her words. Then his grin returned, boundless and unshaken. "I still think I could stretch far enough if I really wanted to!" He balled a fist, determination gleaming in his eyes.
Nami rolled her eyes, playful amusement lifting her tone. "That sounds like the most ridiculous thing ever. But sure, go ahead. Show me."
"Okay then— Gum-Gum... Bazooka!"
Without missing a beat, Luffy thrust his arm skyward, his rubber body extending upward like a coiled spring unwinding. The comical spectacle sent a laugh bubbling from Nami's chest as she watched his hand flail through the air, hopelessly far from the stars he sought.
"It's no use, silly! You're not gonna grab a star!" Her laughter softened into a grin, eyes glinting with affection. "Even if you could, your hand would freeze or burn up long before you ever touched one!"
"I'm not giving up that easily!" Luffy shouted, his arm wobbling comically as it stretched higher. "Yaaaaah—almost got it!"
His hand finally brushed through wisps of low-hanging clouds, far from his intended target but still an impressive feat. Nami blinked in surprise. "Touching clouds now, huh?" She crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. "I guess that's pretty far, even for you."
He let out a triumphant laugh as his arm snapped back, rubbery elasticity pulling him into place. "See? Told you I could go far!"
"Yeah, well, the stars are still out of your reach," she teased. "Crazy as you are, maybe one day you'll find a way, but don't hold your breath."
"Maybe!" Luffy declared cheerfully. His grin stayed as wide as ever as if impossibilities were merely steppingstones to adventure.
Nami shook her head, unable to hide the fond smile tugging at her lips. "I'm not sure how you plan to pull that off, but knowing you, I wouldn't be surprised if you found a way."
The straw hat boy stretched his arms above his head, releasing a contented sigh. "I want to sleep," he murmured, his voice low but tinged with peace.
Nami stood up and brushed off her dress, feeling that their most soothing conversation had probably made him want to sleep. "Yeah… let's head back to the Merry. The others are probably panicking about where we are."
The colorful lights of the festival flickered now in the distance, but her focus was on the quiet path ahead, leading back to their ship. She hadn't expected such a tranquil night, nor had she anticipated enjoying herself so much in the company of her carefree captain.
"Hoy, Nami?" Luffy's voice broke through her thoughts.
"Yes, Luffy..?"
"Let's do it again."
She turned to him, brow raised in curiosity. "Do what again?"
"The festival day," he clarified, his expression earnest and eager. "Every year, let's do it together in places with discounts!"
The sincerity in his tone caught her off guard. For a moment, she blinked, surprised by the warmth spreading through her chest. Her lips curled into a fond smile. "But you really wanna do this every year?"
"Yeah! Why not?" His grin widened. "You deserve a reward for all the hard work you do for us. Didn't you say that earlier?"
Her mind flashed back to her playful remark about wanting her necklace, and how he'd surprised her by actually buying it with his name engraved inside the jewel.
"I-I was just joking when I said that," she muttered, glancing away to hide the faint blush warming her cheeks. But deep down, she wasn't entirely opposed to the idea. The day had been unexpectedly wonderful, after all.
"I'm serious!" Luffy's enthusiasm never wavered. "Let's make it a tradition."
Nami's heart skipped a beat. Was she growing too fond of this silly, lovable captain? She brushed the thought aside, though her smile lingered. "You really spoil me, Captain. But I'm not complaining—jewelry shopping days sound great."
Her teasing earned a hearty laugh from Luffy. "Okay, then! It's official—every year, this festival day is our tradition!"
"No backing out," she teased back, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I'm holding you to that promise, Captain."
He grinned, full of life and determination. "Kishishi! It's sealed!"
Nami chuckled softly, a fond warmth settling in her chest. "You're lucky I also love discounts."
"I'm lucky you're good at getting them," he shot back with a grin.
They shared a laugh, the kind of moment so effortlessly simple yet filled with meaning. The festival may have been winding down, but something precious lingered between them—an unspoken bond strengthened by every shared smile and fleeting glance.
"I can't wait for next year," she mused aloud, her voice light yet sincere.
"Just remind me," Luffy quipped with a sheepish grin. "I'll probably forget by then."
Nami laughed, shaking her head. "Figures. But don't worry—I'll remind you. I've heard of a few other islands that have a few variants of this event, for a different time of the year. I'm sure we'll visit a few someday. For now... Today was... satisfying," she admitted softly.
"Peaceful. Fun. And surprisingly, you didn't cause too much chaos. You almost acted like a real boyf.."
"Not yet, anyway," he teased, grinning wide.
She rolled her eyes, though her smile remained. "Alright.. Let's try to keep it that way for tonight."
For a while, they walked in companionable silence, their path lit by the soft glow of the Skyborne gems. Nami's thoughts wandered back to the day—every laugh, every silly moment, and the surprising comfort she'd found in Luffy's presence. She felt safe with him, a feeling she rarely allowed herself to indulge.
A gentle breeze swept through, carrying the remnants of festival cheer. Nami glanced sideways at her captain, wondering briefly if he felt the same warmth she did. Did today mean more to him than just free food and discounts?
Logically, she doubted it. But something told her there was more to Luffy than his simple exterior suggested.
Her musings were interrupted by a sudden realization. "By the way…" She blinked, her expression shifting to one of mild concern.
"Hmm?"
"We forgot Zoro."
