Spanish class was Peter's purgatory. Sitting at the desk next to Ned debating whether his teacher would notice if he started inching closer to his friend his phone started going off. he shimmed his phone out of his front pocket and glanced down at the illuminated screen to see the one contact he still even after being Tony intern and fighting with him and the Avengers for a couple of months now. Sending his teacher a shy smile as he grabs the hall pass and steps out into the hallway to take the call. The door behind him clicks shut. Peter pulls out his phone and raises it to his ear.
"Get your ass to the tower now, we have a situation" Tony's voice barks into his ear before the call ends. I guess that's all the context I'm getting Peter thinks to himself internally sighing as he heads to his locker to get his backpack out. He slings his backpack over his shoulder and heads to the back of the school where he changes into his suit and webs his backpack to a dumpster hoping it will still be there when he gets back. Losing his third backpack this month won't be a good look and Peter doesn't know how he'll answer about how he lost this one.
He gets to the tower to see Tony and Clint waiting for him "He yell at you to get her fast too?" asks Clint "Something like that," Peter mumbles "Anyways what's the problem" Peter says turning his attention to Tony. Tony debriefs them telling them their plan to take down the aliens that are attacking Times Square and how the rest of the Avengers are already there.
The trio makes their way over to help the rest of them. Peter is given instructions from Steve to stay high and deal with the aliens attacking from above. Scanning the scene before him from a vantage point Peter spots the leader alien. Jumping off the building and swinging over just in time to interrupt the next batch of aliens being delivered "Hey! Over here!" Peter yells hoping to cause a distraction.
A distraction he did cause. While he did take the alien's attention off the other Avengers he shifted it all onto himself. He turns on his heels and gets moving leading them high and higher to get away from anyone who could get hurt. "Peter it appears you're getting low on web supplies," Karen says into his ear "I suggest you go back" s the AI adds. Peter glances behind him to see the aliens right on his tail. He can work with this. Landing on top of the highest building he can find he calls out to the leader "So are we gonna fight or what! One on one. Like men or are you too scared?" The alien looks furious as he lands and starts stomping over to Peter "You dare insult my bravery!" Touched a nerve Peter thought as he waved the alien towards him signaling to start the fight.
He watched the first flying towards his face and stepped to the side, his fist connected with the temple of the alien and he watched as he stumbled forward managing to catch himself before he faceplants. This didn't seem to have the desired effect of hurting the alien and just made him more angry. Through his coms, he can infer that the rest of the aliens he distracted are starting to cause problems below. Alright time to finish this fight Peter thinks cracking his neck.
After going back and forth throwing blows, taking some, and landing some Peter finally gets the alien in the perfect spot. He's on the ground under Peter while Peter is cocking his fist back when the alien in a desperate attempt uses the technology attached to his armor and starts to lift off the ground. Peter grabs on and is being lifted with him. From the ground, Nat looks up to see Peter being dragged along by the alien and shouts into the coms "What the hell are you doing!" "Aww no need to worry about little old me" Peter responds going back to trying to figure out what the hell he is doing.
As they get higher and higher Peter starts to think he made the wrong choice. He looks down to see a deadly height. The alien seems to realize this at the same time as Peter and starts to unclasp the small piece of armor Peter is clinging to. It drops and so does Peter. Fast. Now seems like a great time to ask Karen just how low on webs he is. The answer leaves him panicking. He has one chance. One web left, normally this wouldn't be such a big deal he would attach to something lower himself down, and join the fight back when he gets his back stock, but with everyone yelling in the coms, the rising panic attack this isn't normal circumstances. He knows he can't just let himself fall. He shoots his very last web and watches as it misses the building.
The Avengers watching from the ground are freaking the fuck out. Everyone is yelling directions at Peter, Tony is racing over to where Peter will land asking Friday the calculations as he speeds up to make it, but no matter how fast it's going to be close. So close. Like a fraction of a second close and that terrifies Tony. Watching his intern, his lab partner, his son falling and feeling so hopeless is bringing tears to his eyes.
Tony feels the air rush past him as he sees Peter fall just out of reach. The crack of his skull hitting the pavement echoes throughout the alleyway. Tony lands next to him a moment later, a moment too late. Tony falls to his knees next to Peter, trying to find where the blood underneath him is coming from. Peter is gasping and wheezing for air as his lungs painfully contract.
The rest of the Avengers run up behind Tony. Bruce being the first one to talk tells Tony they need to take the mask off. "No, his identity, he would never forgive me" Tony replies still searching for the source of the blood. "He can't breathe Tony," Bruce says guiding Tony to stand so he can properly search Peter for injuries. He cups the back of Peter's head to take his mask off and his hand comes back bloody. He hears the outrage behind him at finding out the hero's young age but he doesn't have time to think about the ear full Tony will be getting later about child endangerment because he has a job. Keep this child alive.
Bruce does everything he can to help Peter before they get back to the tower where he hands Peter off the the medical team and watches as they disappear behind closed doors with Peter in a stretcher and just like that they left to wait, and wait, and wait.
Hours later Tony is woken up from a sleep he doesn't even remember happening to the news that Peter is situated in a room, still unconscious but stable and alive. That's nice and all but Tony won't be satisfied until he sees his kid. He follows the doctors to Peter's room. He pulls up a chair next to Peter's bed and watches. Watches the rise and fall of his chest, the monitor showing his heartbeat, his face, everything that will let Tony know that he is ok.
Some time later Tony is asleep with his head on Peter's bed when he hears a groggy Mister Stark that could only belong to one kid. He looks up with the biggest grin on his face and carefully brings Peter into a hug. Both Tony and Peter want to stay in this moment forever but eventually, Peter's curiosity gets the best of him. He pulls away from the hug, looking up at Tony with big, watery eyes, and asks if he is going to be okay.
For the first time in his life, Tony doesn't have the words to answer. He calls the doctor in to explain that Peter is going to need to learn to walk again when he landed his spine fractured. The doctors fixed it but there are still going to be difficulties with this new problem.
The doctor walks out leaving Tony and Peter together in the room again when Peter starts to tear up "How am I meant to protect people if I can't even walk!" Peter exclaims tearfully "We've faced worse problems, kid," Tony says trying to reassure Peter. He pulls Peter to his chest.
"And we are going to face worse in the future, this problem will be over before you know it"
