“Rex? Can you hear me, love?”
“Wha… whe… where am I?”
“Home. You’re at home, love”
Rex glanced around. Confused as ever, not recognising his surroundings.
“Home?”
“Yes, home. Our home. The one we have lived in for he past twenty years.”
“I um…” Rex felt really confused, afraid even, with eyes glazed over. The crying Rex did when he was in a total loss, of everything familiar to him. “Am scared.”
“I know you are. Is okay, Rexy.”
This, seeing the once brilliant man, the great tactician, the soldier he had been, like this, always broke Cody’s heart.
Rex’s face was stained with tears, his eyes darting every which way.
“Is okay Rexy. You’re safe here, with me.” Cody’s arms securely around his husband. Trying to convey the same notion through his actions as well.
Rex did not object, thankfully. He never did, even if the did not recognise Cody. But somehow, deep inside the bond between them earned the trust of the stranger Cody became during moments like this.
Some days, Rex was like his usual self while others, just like this one was, he was completely lost. About who he was, where he was and perhaps most importantly, whom Cody was.
All Cody could do was to try his best to alleviate the anxiety Rex felt during these moments.
Because Cody would stay by Rex no matter what. The bond, the partnership, the love the two shared being far too strong to never do anything else. Cody’s decision quite clear since the very start of this, condition.
“It’s okay love. I’ve got you.” Cody held onto his crying partner, gently cooing and rocking Rex as he did.
It took some time. Not that much effort though. Love being key. Patience, it’s partner.
And Cody had plenty of it all. For Rex he did.
“Co… Cody?”
Cody heard his name being called, their eyes connecting.
“Hey, sweetheart. There you are.” Cody smiled at Rex.
“What happened?”
Rex not even realising the change in himself, which in Cody’s mind was a blessing in disguise.
“You got lost there for a spell. But your back again right here, where you belong, love.”
They were huddled together for a spell in perfect silence in each other’s arms.
“Thank you.”
“For what, Rex?”
“I’ve having my back.” Rex having his clarity back again, realising something was off, but Cody remained by his side just the same.
“That’s what partners do love. Always.”
