Work Text:
“Reeex…. Is very late. Why are you still awake?“
Cody having woken up because of the light too bright from the bedside of his partner still awake, doing something other then sleep, clearly.
“So sorry, love. Just, couldn’t sleep because of tomorrow’s mission. So I thought to go over the plans once again. To make sure we didn’t miss anything.”
Cody heard the unspoken truth between the lines, he real reason Rex was awake. It wasn’t the plans he was worried about. Rex trusted the plans, their plans.
The real reason why Rex was up in the middle of the night wasn’t because of battle jitters, not the mission ahead. It was something else keeping the Captain up.
“So…” Cody turned to Rex, his hand finding purchase on hir partner’s arm, soothing strokes following suit. “nightmares again eh.”
Cody wasn’t asking. He knew better.
They all had them, those pesky horrific images flashing in their minds. But Rex suffered from them more frequently. And then, the insomnia kicking in. As Rex did not dare to sleep.
Rex sighed heavily. Not that he had expect for Cody to swallow his white lie so easily anyway.
“Yeah.”
Cody could easily relate to how Rex was feeling. But having seen how much Rex suffered because of these night-terrors, Cody could only try to alleviate the burden of the anxiety of his partner.
Cody didn’t need any further explanation either.
“Commere.”
And order perhaps, though a soft one.
Cody removed the covers, patting the spot right beside him. An offer for Rex to join Cody there for safety, security, for whatever Rex needed at the moment to relax, to perhaps finally, sleep.
Rex did without qualm. Settling to the side of his partner.
Being held by Cody, the body heat shared, Cody’s soothing, gentle touches on his skin were calming the anxious Captain.
Rex settling against Cody’s chest soon enough, listening to his heartbeat. The rhythm so familiar, calming and perhaps assuring as well.
It was then when the most important part of the Cody therapy started.
The low humming sounds the Commander of the GAR only managed to produce. Them all turning into a gently sung lullaby. Something from their own past having stuck with the couple, Cody’s singing always managing to lull Rex into a deep sleep.
