Adam and Ronan have been together for nearly six months. They got together after an argument turned into a confession, in which they both finally admitted their feelings for each other. They decided to not make a public announcement since “I don’t want to fucking tell everyone what we do, Parrish. It’s our fucking businesses. They aren’t that stupid, they’ll just figure out we kiss and fuck and all that romance shit and nobody has to talk about it” as Ronan put it. Adam was not really convinced of that, since Gansey is the most oblivious person he’s ever met. And that’s saying something considering how long Ronan and Adam himself have been oblivious to the crushes they had on each other.
Blue on the other hand seems to have picked up on their relationship a few weeks into them dating. She just sent Adam a knowing look when Ronan had his arm behind Adam’s back at Nino’s and that was that. Adam knows that Blue would not talk with Gansey about their friend’s relationship, that makes another person to not tell Gansey.
Now it has been six months and Adam is certain that Gansey still has no clue about the change in their relationship from reluctant friends who flirt to boyfriends. In Adam’s opinion Gansey is misreading all the signs Ronan and him have been sending.
On a warm Saturday evening, Adam and Ronan are lying in Ronan’s bed at the Barns, which by now has become their bed in both of their minds. Ronan is stroking Adam’s soft hair while Adam is resting his head on Ronan’s chest, their legs tangled together and Adam’s arms wrapped around his boyfriend’s waist. Adam looks up at Ronan and tells him “You know, I think it’s time we tell Gansey, I don’t think he’ll get it otherwise”. Ronan’s dark eyebrows furrow and his face morphs into one of confusion. “What are you talking about?! Of course he fucking knows”. Adam sighs and says “What makes you think he knows about us?”. Ronan just rolls his eyes in a way that is very familiar to Adam by now. “Parrish, Dick is the second smartest person I know. Do you really think he doesn’t know we are together?”. “Ro, listen to me, yesterday while we were walking to the cars after Nino’s, you talked with Blue and I was walking with Gansey. You know what he said to me? I quote ‘I am so glad that you and Ronan are finally real friends’. Ronan he thinks we got past our differences and are now good friends”. Ronan just stares at Adam, “what?” he asks. Adam sighs again “He thinks our ‘flirting phase’ as you call it, was us still hating each other and he thinks we are friends now. He thinks us arriving and leaving together, the sleepovers and everything is us being friends”. Ronan groans, “This fucking idiot, how is he so smart and stupid at the same time. I guess we just have to show him, baby”. Now it is Adam’s turn to groan, “Ronan, what are you planning?”. Ronan just pulls Adam closer and kisses his head “Don’t worry about it, sleep now, darling”. Adam decides not to worry for now and falls asleep.
Ronan’s ‘plan’ to get Gansey to understand their relationship shall be carried out the next day. They are planning to meet up with Blue and Gansey at Monmouth to order some pizza, watch a movie, and play some games. When Adam wakes up that morning and remembers their plans for the day, he pieces together what his boyfriend is planning to do. Adam breathes in deeply and thinks about how lucky Ronan is that he loves him and lets him carry out his little plan. Adam is also curious how his boyfriend, who normally expresses his affection for Adam in front of others through insults or shoving, is going to use PDA to make Gansey see that they are in a relationship. Since Adam is such a good boyfriend, he decides to help Ronan by wearing one of his boyfriend’s shirts which Gansey might recognise. He’s walking down the stairs to find Ronan in the kitchen preparing breakfast, he wraps his arms around his boyfriends middle and tries to look over his shoulder to get a look at the pancakes Ronan is currently making. “Smells amazing” Adam whispers into Ronan’s ear. Ronan laughs a bit and turns around to put his arms around his Adam’s shoulders and pulls him in for a tight hug, “good morning baby” he says into his boyfriend’s good ear. Adam shivers at that and pulls back to give Ronan a kiss. After a few seconds Ronan pulls back and looks down at what Adam is wearing, a small noise of satisfaction escapes him, Ronan loves to see Adam wearing his clothes. They have breakfast and spend the day on the couch until it’s time to leave for Monmouth. Ronan gets into the driver’s side of the BMW and puts on his music at a volume that makes it possible for Adam to still hear him, even if his good ear is facing away from Ronan. When Adam takes a seat on the passenger side Ronan smiles at him, takes his left hand and kisses each knuckle. He puts Adam’s hand under his on the gear stick, laces his fingers through his boyfriend’s and starts the car.
When they arrive at Monmouth they park the car next to the pig and head inside. Blue and Gansey are sitting close together on a couch and look at something on Blue’s phone. When they hear Adam and Ronan arrive Blue jumps up to give each of them a hug, first Adam who hugs her back right away and then Ronan who pretends to hate the hug but still hugs Blue tight. Gansey also gets up to greet them but before he arrives Ronan puts an arm around Adam’s shoulders and pulls him closer. Gansey does not seem to notice and continues to half hug each of them. They all settle down near the tv, Gansey is sitting on an armchair with Blue sitting on a pillow close by. Adam sits on his usual seat on the far left of the sofa so his hearing ear is facing his friends. Ronan who usually lounges on the full available space left on the sofa decides to sit like a normal person right beside Adam and puts his arm behind his shoulders. They talk for a bit about nothing particular and then decide to order the pizza. Ronan offers to be the one calling Nino’s which is already strange since Ronan hates everything to do with phones. He asks Gansey and Blue what pizza they want, a medium size vegetable pizza for Blue and a Calzone for Gansey, then proceeds to call. He orders Blue’s and Gansey’s, then a large Diavolo, obviously for himself, and then a large Margherita, tells the person on the other end when to deliver their order and hangs up. Gansey looks a bit puzzled and asks Ronan “Why didn’t you ask Adam what he wanted? Also I’ve never seen Adam order a large pizza”. Ronan smirked and said “You see Dick, I just know Parrish that well. He’s obviously craving a plain cheese pizza today and I’m buying him a large one so he can take the rest of it for his shift tomorrow”. A surprised look crossed Gansey’s face, he looks at Adam “You’re letting Ronan buy the pizza for you?”. Adam shrugs and leans the tiniest bit closer to Ronan “Yeah, I guess so”. Ronan smiles at that and strokes a hand over Adam’s shoulder out of the others view. He’s always happy when his boyfriend allows him to buy stuff for him. Gansey doesn’t seem to think about it more than that and instead says “I wanted to watch this new horror movie today if that’s alright with you both, Blue has already approved it”. Adam looks down at that, he’s not the biggest fan of horror movies. Ronan takes Adam’s right hand with his own and strokes his palm “Yeah, alright, I’ll protect Parrish”. Gansey looks at them for a moment then claps and stands up “fantastic” and goes to put on the movie. Since Ronan is not occupying the entire sofa today, Gansey and Blue also squeeze themselves on the couch with Gansey now between Ronan and Blue. He now notices Ronan’s hand that is still stroking slowly over Adam’s shoulder. Gansey considers them for a moment, the way they sit so close together and are touching in multiple places, he’s glad they’re such good friends. Gansey puts his own arm around his girlfriend and presses play. They watch in silence for a while until one major jump scare. Adam makes a little noise and hides himself in Ronan’s chest. Gansey expects Ronan to push him away, but what he sees makes him stop for a second. Ronan puts his other arm around Adam as well and holds him close, he leans down and whispers something in his ear. At that Adam looks up at him, smiles, and sits back to watch the movie. Gansey shrugs to himself, takes a look at their once again intertwined hands, and also returns to watch the movie.
Shortly after their pizza arrives, they all assemble around the small couch table and dig in. Ronan is the only one not sitting at the table, he’s sitting cross legged on the sofa behind Adam. When Adam has finished half his pizza he leans back against Ronan’s legs, his head resting on Ronan’s crossed ankles. Now Gansey is again witnessing something he’s never seen before, Ronan puts his slice of pizza down, cleans his hands and starts combing his hands gently through Adam’s hair. That makes Gansey stop once again, Ronan never stops eating his pizza before he’s finished the whole thing. And Adam is also acting weird, he did not react badly in any way to being touched unexpectedly. He has even closed his eyes. What a strange day with these two Gansey thinks to himself and ignores them again. Had he continued looking at them he would’ve seen that Adam opened his eyes and looked up at Ronan with pure love in his eyes.
After dinner they begin the playing games part of their meet up. Ronan suggests “Let’s play something in couples”, which is the closest he’s come to saying he and Adam are together in front of Gansey. Gansey though just looks through the board games and picks some things out, seemingly not having registered Ronan’s comment. They sit around the big table, Ronan and Adam on one side, Blue and Gansey on the other side. They play a while and then Ronan gets up, he returns a minute later with a glass of water which he sets down in front of Adam, Ronan absentmindedly kisses Adam’s head and sits back down. Gansey looks confused again for a second but then remembers that friends do that sometimes, don’t they? When they’re done with board games they move back to the tv and decide to play Mario Kart. Gansey forgot to charge some of the controllers so they only had two available. Ronan was quickly back with his suggestions “I’m gonna play with Parrish, we’re gonna fucking ruin you both”. Blue answered “As if I’ll loose to you”. Ronan quickly fired back “Well sucks to have a boyfriend who’s gonna make you lose, can’t relate”. “Hey, I didn’t know he was so bad at Mario Kart when we started dating”. Ronan just snorts at that. They start with the most anticipated race, Ronan versus Blue. The person driving for each team is sitting in front of their partner, they’re using their boyfriend’s legs as a backrest. When Ronan ends up getting a close second place he leans his head against Adam’s knees and softly says “I fucked up”. Adam laughs and watches Blue celebrating her victory, Gansey is too busy watching his girlfriend to notice Adam caressing Ronan’s cheek. Ronan pouts a bit so they have Adam playing against Blue next. Adam and Ronan switch places and the race starts. Gansey notices Ronan’s hands on Adam’s shoulders and asks himself if they’re cheating at the game in some way, then his gaze wanders back to the screen where Blue just lost to Adam. Ronan is up and running around, cheering and celebrating, Adam also looks quite pleased. Now Blue is the one pouting, she gets up and says “I’m gonna search for some snacks and I won’t share them with you, Parrish”. Gansey follows her into the kitchen and gives her a small kiss on the cheek to cheer her up. When they return they see Ronan with one arm slung over Adam’s shoulders, both looking at the tv. Gansey and Blue sit back down with Gansey now in front of Blue’s legs. Ronan is smirking when he sits down next to Gansey, the third race begins. As expected Ronan wins, Gansey realises Ronan celebrated way more when Adam won than he does now. Ronan looks back at Adam “Now you just gotta beat Dick, then we’ve won this fucking thing”. Adam smiles “I’ll do my best, Lynch”. As always, Gansey thinks, Ronan is way too invested into Mario Kart. Adam and Gansey take their seats and start the last round. It ends up being a close call but Adam is the first across the finish line. Ronan jumps up and grabs Adam with him, he spins him around, and when he sets him back down kisses him.
Gansey’s jaw drops. Blue just looks amused and fond. Gansey mumbles “Ronan kissed him” to himself. Then louder “Ronan, did you just kiss Adam?”. Adam laughs and hides his face in Ronan’s shoulder, Ronan groans. “Fucking hell Dick, yes. Yes, I just kissed Adam, my boyfriend”. Gansey makes a strangled noise “Since when is Adam your boyfriend? What’s going on?”. Ronan sighs “Gansey, Adam and I have been together for half a year and we thought you’d just notice and then you’d fucking know. We didn’t want to just announce it, that’s fucking weird, you and Sargent also didn’t tell us. So we just waited till you noticed, but you never did. Here you fucking go I guess. Parrish’s mine”. Gansey just blinked at them where they still stood pressed together. He made a hmm noise and then said “I think that makes sense, yes. That also explains a lot. Sometimes I should consider what I see more. The clues were all there”. Adam laughs a bit “Well, now you know. Ro didn’t even notice that you didn’t know, Gans”. Blue burst out laughing at that “You are all so ridiculous. You two are the most obvious couple if one looks at you for more than 5 minutes. And you Gansey, need to work on your combination skills. They are practically glued together, they arrive and leave together, just look at their heart eyes. How did you not notice?”. They all end up laughing and fall back on the sofa, they talk a bit more then Ronan and Adam pack up their stuff and get ready to leave. On the way to the car Adam and Gansey fall back a bit “You know Adam, I’m really happy for you two, you’re good for each other. I only now realise this but you are the reason Ronan has been doing better, he’s livelier, happier. And he also seems to make you happy”. Adam looks down at his converse and smiles to himself “He makes me happier than I’ve ever been”. Gansey looks at him and smiles. They walk in silence for a second then Gansey says “You are wearing Ronan’s shirt aren’t you”. Adam stops then laughs so hard he’s holding himself up on Gansey’s arm. They say their goodbyes and Ronan drives them back to the Barns.
They cuddle up in their bed and Ronan sighs contently when Adam moves even closer. “Adam, I-“ Ronan begins. “What is it, Ro?”. “I just-, today was nice”. “Yeah, it was… what do you really want to tell me?”. “I want more like today, to touch you almost all the time, to hug or kiss you sometimes. Just being together more openly, I guess”. “Oh Ronan, of course we can do that. Come here my big baby” Adam pulls him into a soft kiss. “I just feel comfortable when you’re close. Thank you for being with me, Adam”. Adam has to wipe a tear away when he looks into Ronan’s eyes. Ronan smiles that soft ‘only for Adam’ smile “Tamquam” Ronan begins. “Alter idem” Adam finishes. Ronan pulls Adam back into him and Adam hides his face in Ronan’s neck. “I love you, baby”. “I love you too, Ro”.
Bonus: What happened when Blue and Gansey were in the kitchen
Ronan pulls Adam close and kisses his cheek “You restored my honour, thank you baby”. Adam chuckles, “I nearly lost cause of your distracting hands”. They both laughed. “Do you think Gansey is any fucking wiser?”. Adam shakes his head “No, I think he needs something more extreme”. Ronan thinks for a second “Would it be okay if I kissed you?”. Adam smiles at him “You kiss me all the time, since when do you ask?”. “I just want to be sure you’re comfortable kissing in front of them”. Adam looks into Ronan’s eyes and just nods. Ronan turns them toward the tv side by side, “I’m so proud of you”. Adam knows he means more than his win against Blue. Adam knows he’s in love with the right man.
