Chapter 1: Teaser
Chapter Text
Welcome back, everyone!
Hope everyone enjoyed the season premiere – it feels good to putting out new episodes of EVA-Trek again after the lengthy break. Not many comments before the episode this week, so I’ll get out of the way and let the story unfold.
Stay tuned after the episode for another edition of The Ready Room, which delves into the USS Nerv herself.
Let’s boogie!

ACT NOTES:
- Episode Title:  Here is the Frank Turner song that gave this week's installment its title:
 - Title Page: EVA-Trek is excited to welcome back returning director Hanelle M. Culpepper, who directed two episodes in season one: “Come Back” and “Headwires.”
 - Page 1, Scene 2.1: Shinji’s cello was one of many casualties during Nerv’s fight against SEELE during the season one finale “The Last Song.”
 - Page 1, Scene 2.2: Kintsugi is a rather beautiful way of repairing objects.  Here’s an example:
 - Page 2, Scene 3: Unfortunately for Asuka, she’s got the latest birthday of the five Eva pilots. She won’t be turning 18 until late season 4, or December 4, 2375.
 - Page 3: Rei was still billeted in the quarters she used to share with her father, Gendo Ikari. Misato never had the heart to reassign the cabin.
 - Page 4: Remember that before Rei merged with Lilith at the end of season one, she never used contractions or other types of informal English.

ACT NOTES:
- Page 6, Scene 4: The Regula-type station has been seen multiple times throughout the Trek franchise, beginning with Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
 - Page 6, Scene 5: Daveed Diggs plays the role of Captain Hashim in this episode. He’s known to Trek fans for playing the Andorian Commander Tysess on Star Trek: Prodigy.
 - Page 7: Starfleet Remembrance Day is a holiday dedicated to the memory of those who have lost their lives in service to Starfleet. It was first brought up in SNW: “Memento Mori.”
 - Page 10.1: The Black Cluster was first seen in TNG: “Hero Worship.” The gravitational effects from multiple collapsing protostars make it a hazardous region of space, destroying the unfortunate SS Vico.
 - Page 10.2: The USS Nichols is named for the dearly departed Nichelle Nichols, our beloved Nyota Uhura.
 - Page 12: Nerv’s Runabouts are named for rivers in Japan. The Teshio is the second-longest river in Hokkaido at 159 miles in length. It is also Japan’s northernmost river.
 - Page 14: This backstory regarding the prototype Evangelion aboard the Melbourne dates all the way back to the Season One Writer’s Guide, where I wrote about four pages worth of backstory tying in SEELE, Second Impact, the Angels, and more into Star Trek’s timeline.

ACT NOTES:
- Page 18, Scene 11: Regolith is a blanket of loose deposits, such as dust and rubble, found throughout the solar system.
 - Page 18, Scene 12: As established previously, the Vulcan Dr. Sorrd is voiced by Steve Blum, and the Andorian Ensign Th’Lan is voiced by Jack Quaid.
 - Page 20.1: Our new Kelpien botanist, Sa’Kat, is voiced by Sam Richardson, who was just about the only positive thing I can point out regarding Star Trek: Section 31, quite possibly the franchise’s biggest misfire. For more on Sa’Kat, see this week’s The Ready Room.
 - Page 20.2: Muktoks are a plant indigenous to Betazed. They can live to be hundreds of years old and make a light chiming noise when shaken.
 - Page 22: As you’ll see in production art, Misato’s ready room has had some renovations after being nearly destroyed during the Battle of Earth at the end of last season.
 - Page 27, Scene 20: Maya’s lucky this didn’t become a compound or open fracture, which breaks through the skin.

ACT NOTES:
- Page 30.1: FUBAR is a military term short for “Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition.”
 - Page 30.2: A transverse fracture goes at a 90° angle to the bone’s long axis. In Maya’s case, this fracture snapped her femur in two.
 - Page 32, Scene 24: It’s likely Dr. Sorrd may have been under the tutelage of Leonard McCoy or Katharine Pulaski, who used such methods of setting fractures in TNG: “Contagion.”
 - Page 34, Scene 26: Danny Pudi and Donald Glover are back as Technicians Nadir and Barnes.
 - Page 35: Life Support Belts were first seen in Star Trek: The Animated Series.

CUT TO:
SERIES OF IMAGERY
As yours truly begins to narrate...
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
Welcome back to EVA-Trek’s production offices, everyone!  Let’s first take a look at our newest recurring character, Sa’Kat!
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
I’ve long wanted to bring in more aliens that were established in Star Trek: Discovery as part of my continuing efforts to make the whole of Star Trek’s rich universe feel more cohesive.  Mr. Saru was one of my favorite parts of Disco, so adding a Kelpien was a natural choice.  You’ll get to see him and Dr. Sorrd throughout the season.

ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
As mentioned in the Act Notes earlier for Scene 30, here is a look at Misato’s remodeled Ready Room.  The new design brings the color scheme more in line with the Main Bridge, while also creating a through-line to the version seen aboard the Sovereign-class Enterprise-E.

ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
Our next major feature is a tour through the USS Nerv.  Her internal arrangement is a bit different from other Galaxy-class vessels, owing to changes required by the Eva Cages.  You can already see some of the changes in the cutaway view above.  If you look closely throughout the following blueprints, you can see the locations of the crew’s quarters in the saucer section.
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
At Deck 4, the height of the Evas necessitated opening the Cages to the Main Shuttlebay.  Some minor rerouting of the emergency turbolift to the Battle Bridge was required at deck 5 due to the addition of the cages.  We also see the high-bay of Nerv’s spacious Rec Center.
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
The Eva Cages required the shifting around of the Transporter Rooms and their attendant facilities on decks 6 and 7.
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
The main floor of the Rec Center is on Deck 8, containing a basketball court, fencing court, and customizable areas for various activities.  The shared quarters for Shinji, Kaworu, Rei, and Asuka are at the fore end of this level.  Deck 9 is home to Nerv’s four main classrooms, as well as Dr. Akagi’s lab and the Eva Pilot training holodeck.  Port and starboard future expansion areas were given over to cargo bays due to the loss of these spaces from the Eva Cages.
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
Everyone’s favorite lounge, Ten-Forward is here on Deck 10.
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
Decks 13 and 14 are mostly dedicated to the remainder of the Eva Cage space, as well as Cetacean Ops, which wasn’t required to give over any space.  The Cetacean Ops lab seen in season one is on Deck 13.
ALLANSFIREBIRD (V.O.)
Finally, the last major change is on Deck 37, where the lower decks residential corridors for newly-assigned ensigns can be found.
CUT TO:
INT. “THE READY ROOM” INTERVIEW SET
Wil as before.
WIL WHEATON
Thank you as always to EVA-Trek’s showrunner, Allansfirebird for taking us behind the curtain with background on this week’s episode.  And a special thanks to you, the readers, for your interest!  We’ll see you all back here next week for another edition of The Ready Room!
Wil takes a momentary pause, then:
WIL WHEATON
Til then, I’m Wil Wheaton --
(he gives the Vulcan salute)
Live long and prosper.

FADE OUT.
