"Two cups of flour," Lan said, pouring them into a bowl. "Alright, we've got milk over there, butter and sugar in that bowl. Eggs on the side, vanilla, cocoa powder, anything else?"
Moiraine shook her head. "Don't think so," she said, turning on the electric mixer. "Light, I still can't figure out how to mix butter and sugar together without it getting everywhere."
Siuan laughed, putting her hand over Moiraine's on the electric mixer. It wasn't that Moiraine needed help- she was perfectly capable of combining ingredients together by herself, but there was something so delightful about these little moments. The way Moiraine smiled up at her and the way Siuan's hand fit so perfectly over her small one was so lovely.
And despite Moiraine's complaints about the mess, she knew Moiraine didn't mind, really. A little bit of mess didn't matter. She leaned down to kiss the top of Moiraine's head, taking her hand off Moiraine's to wrap her arms around her wife's waist. Moiraine, still mixing the butter and sugar, relaxed into Siuan.
"Looks good," Moiraine said, turning off the mixture. "Lan, add the eggs?"
Lan expertly cracked an egg with one hand, the egg landing neatly in the bowl. "It says here to add them one at a time," he said. "Do you want me to pour the milk out while you're doing that?"
Siuan kissed the top of Moiraine's head, squeezing her gently before releasing her. "I'll do it," she said. "Then can you show me how to crack an egg with one hand? I've never been able to master it."
Moiraine giggled. "I still remember when we tried to teach ourselves how," she said. "We got egg everywhere, and then we didn't want to waste it, so we ended up picking all the bits of shell out and making omelettes instead."
"They were the best omelettes ever," Siuan said. "The best omelettes, because I cooked them with my wife. Anything I do with you is the best." She finished pouring the milk into the measuring cup, capping the bottle and setting it aside.
Lan passed her an egg, demonstrating the movement. "Like this," he said, tapping the egg on its side, then gripping it on the top and the bottom with one hand, before pulling the two halves of the egg apart. "There we go. Look, you've got it!"
Siuan cheered, placing the eggshell in a scrap bowl, wiping her hand on a piece of paper towel. "Finally got it," she said. "Just when I'd given up on it, too! Moiraine, do you want me to add another egg?"
Moiraine nodded, and Siuan poured in half of the eggs that she and Lan had beaten. Siuan watched Moiraine's quick, deft hands beat the mixture, and smiled.
"You're so cute," she said. "We need to bake more often. I've forgotten how adorable you are when we bake."
"You're cute," Moiraine laughed. "Lan, pass me the other egg and the cocoa powder please?"
Lan passed her the egg, waiting for her to finish pouring it into the mixture before passing her the tin of cocoa powder. Moiraine finished with the egg, and opened the tin of cocoa powder, delicately sniffing at it like a puppy.
"Smells good," she said, passing the tin to Siuan. "Lan, how much do we put in?"
Lan looked towards the recipe. "Half a cup," he said. "But we can add a tiny bit more, if you want. I know you like it chocolatey."
Siuan spooned the powder into the measuring cup until it was the right amount, then added in a few more spoonfuls.
"There we go," she said, winking at them. "Extra chocolatey. I even got us some chocolate chips when we went shopping, so we can add those in too. Once Lan's done sifting the flour into the mixture, that is."
"You can add them in," he said, once he finished working the flour into the batter. Moiraine opened the packet of chocolate chips, pouring in a generous amount, as Lan stirred the mixture.
Moiraine shifted aside so Siuan could look at the batter. "Good?" she asked. "Or do we want some more?"
Siuan narrowed her eyes at the batter. "Hmm," she said, assessing it carefully, "Maybe just a few more." She grabbed the packet, dumping in some more chocolate chips, before she grabbed a few from the packet, popping them into her mouth.
"Perfect," she said, chewing. She passed the packet to Moiraine, who took a couple herself before passing them to Lan. Moiraine leaned in to kiss Siuan, smiling at the lingering taste of the chocolate on her lips.
"Sweet tooth," Moiraine said, tapping Siuan's nose with one finger, before kissing her again. "I love you."
Siuan smiled at her wife, pressing a kiss into Moiraine's hair, inhaling deeply.
"You smell like cake," she said. "Delicious." They watched Lan pour the batter into a cake tin and place the cake in the oven.
Lan laughed, dropping all the dishes in the sink, except for the batter bowl and three spoons.
"We can clean up later," he said, handing them each a spoon and taking the batter bowl. "What say we go clean this bowl in front of the television?"
Moiraine hugged Siuan from the side, Siuan placing an arm around her and another arm around Lan, as much as she could with their height difference.
"Sounds perfect," Moiraine said, leaning her head against Siuan's shoulder. "But then again, anything is perfect with the two of you."
