little ears

Summary:

AJ padded, tiny feet stubbornly following his big brother and claimed his own spot on the couch next to Bucky. “Uncle Bucky, do you think she’ll have super-strength?”

“She already got the staring problem.” Sam said, throwing a smirk at his husband. “We’ll see if she got her daddy’s punches too.”

“Which one?” Bucky responded fondly.

“I bet she’ll beat all the Wakandians.” AJ said, proudly.

“AJ, the Wakandians are our friends.”

“Yea. But she’ll still kick their asses.” Sarah gasped, glaring at Sam while he cackled.

“Watch your mouth, Wilson.” She pointed at the family. “All Wilsons. We got little ears in the family now.”

Work Text:

She was born on the fifth of September, steel blue eyes and bronze skin with a laugh that was like the clear, blue, sound of icicles shattering. Sam thought she looked kind of like Rebecca, Bucky’s younger sister, with her dimpled cheeks and her bouncy gait that she still had when she was eighty. She was just born, but Sam swore that she would be bouncy. Bucky thought she looked like Sarah with her little coily curls, already her little hands reaching up to him. Sarah liked that they were happy. She loved that she had a niece to dote on, but most of all, she loved the way her brothers looked. High, excited, drunk on the taste of life. Sarah didn’t have much to drink, but she wasn’t very thirsty anyways.

“She looks like Mama.” Sarah said off-handedly, watching the pair. Sam tilted his head to the side and squinted.

“Ooh, I see it. It’s that little nose, ain’t it.”

“Uh huh. Also those little hands.”

“Calloused, like mama’s.”

Bucky wrinkled his nose, chuckling, carefully tracing her features. “That’s probably eczema.”

“I have eczema!” AJ said, proudly interjecting. He puffed out his chest. “I think I should hold her since I have eczema. You know, to show solidarity.”

Cass, thus far quiet, burst into laughter.

“Cashton Wilson!” Sarah said, lightly reprimanding him. “What, you wanna carry her?”

“I’m definitely going to drop her.”

“No, you won’t.” Sam beckoned him. “Come on, what’s she gonna do without her big cousin.”

“I’m a big cousin too!” AJ exclaimed.

Cass ignored his little brother and watched his uncle. “You sure?”

“No.” Bucky deadpanned. “Get over here.”

Sarah watched Cass gently and cautiously reach his arms out towards the little girl.

“Cass, take a seat, I don’t want you dropping her.”

“Which,” Sam quickly followed up with. “Is not going to happen.”

Bucky gently handed his baby daughter over, cupping the back of her neck and handing her over. She mewled slightly, tiny and oh-so fragile.

As if response, the little girl let out a quiet roar and immediately settled back into Cass’s arms. Bucky chuckled. “I bet Ayo would say this kid has a warrior spirit.”

Sam snorted. “Nah, she’d say this kid’s smarter than her dad. More common sense.”

Bucky rolled his eyes. “If we were in wakanda, they’d put a vibranium binkie in her mouth.”

“What name did y’all decide on?” Sarah asked, quietly.

“Well…” Bucky and Sam exchanged a look, a small smile on their lips. “My sister’s name was Rebecca.”

“Rebecca. It’s a pretty name.” Sarah let the name roll around in her head, circling her voice and throat like an echoing dream. “Rebecca Barnes-Wilson?”

“We- well, we’re also giving her a middle name.”

“Yea? What’s that?” Sarah said, a small grin on his lips. Maybe it was mama’s name, or maybe even Bucky’s grandmother’s name.

“Rebecca Sarah. Her name is Rebecca Sarah Barnes-Wilson.” Sarah looked at her brother and the man that had grown to become family, sweetly, quietly.

“Rebecca Sarah,” she exhaled, almost exuberant and quiet with joy. “I love that.”

“Yea, well.” Sam said slyly. “We can’t avoid giving her a sister now.”

Sarah laughed.
