Work Text:

It was the night that had been anticipated with every passing week since the school year began. Prom night. To the student's surprise, South Park High School decided to go the extra mile and not have the dance in the high school gym. Instead, they rented out a venue, and in the mountain town nature of the town, it was an open, dimly lit wooden cabin. White columns lined the edges of the darker oak wood, and white table covers draped over the tables to match.

“Why did we even bother coming again?” Kyle asks while adjusting his green tie that lies against the white button-up shirt. Beside him, Cartman wore a similar suit with a red tie instead. Then to his left was Kenny, who wore a tan suit with an orange tie, as well as a few patches to hide the tares.

“I don’t know about you guys, but I’m bout to get laidddd.” Kenny gave a toothy grin filled with all the confidence in the world. The three of them start walking towards the entrance. Stan was missing from their usual party since Wendy was his date. Kyle watched Kenny and Cartman walk ahead of him as he scanned the crowd. His heart felt a bit heavy at the missing presence of his friend.

The time flew by with ease. The songs fluctuated between party 2000s music and whatever stupid song was trending. They had met up with Stan and had a few drinks with one another. But as the night neared an end, the slower romantic songs began to play. Kenny had disappeared a bit ago. And now Kyle watched with a mysterious linger in his eyes as Stan led Wendy to the dance floor. He sighed and took a seat on the wooden folder chair. As the last drop of his drink hit his lips, he felt someone's hand rest on his shoulder. Without turning his head, he looks up and out of the corner of his eye sees one Eric Cartman

“You wanna get out of here?”

Leave the prom with Cartman? What the hell, there’s not much better going for him here. He nodded and got out of his seat. Sure, they had their ups and down’s but as they got older, a sense of mutual spite and rivalry kept them on good terms. As they walked out, he realized the cover of night had come over them. The location was rather remote, allowing the stars to shimmer brightly. Lost in his thoughts, he blindly followed his friend, who was ranting about the prom and some stupid altercation he got in with Clyde. But after a while of not hearing Kyle lecture him back, it was clear the talking had subsided. Finally, they reached a clearing at the apex of the hill behind the cabin. Cartman took a seat, and Kyle followed suit.

“Alright, Kyle, I know it’s the way of your people to betray your friends in silence, but what’s up, dude?”

“Shut up fatass.” A small smile began on the ginger’s face. He leaned back on the palms of his hands and stared up a the sky. “Cartman… Do you ever think that each star is supposed to be here tonight? Like it was fated for them. They're so close to one another but… not enough to touch, to be together.”

“Yea. I know what you mean.” Kyle felt big brown eyes resting on him, the weight so heavy they couldn’t be ignored. But he shook his head. He was probably imagining things.

“Kyle,”

“Yea, what’s up?” He replies, not looking away from the stars just yet.

“I love you.”

A heavy pause filled the air.

“What.” Now his head jerks away to stare the other in the eyes. To make sure he wasn’t being fucked with.

“I love you.”

“... Eric,”
