The periodic clinks and clangs of swords echoed through the empty courtyard as the king and his most trusted knight sparred.
Sonic wasn’t one to just sit on the throne and do nothing- he found it mind numbingly boring. Instead, he was a more active ruler, always up and doing something, from dumb things like chalk drawing with kids on the street to negotiation over kingdom trades. In any downtime, he opted to spend it with his knights or his staff.
As the sun slowly drifted down to dusk in the sky, (king) Sonic and Sir Lancelot kept slowly circling the other as their eyes flicked around, looking for openings. Their swords clink together as the two shoot forward, eyes locked. With a small wink, Sonic lunged forward, a mischievous smile spread across his face. Lancelot, distracted by the small and flirty wink, jumped to action a millisecond too late.
Lancelot’s sword clattered down as Sonic pinned him against the ground. Lancelot was thankful in that moment for his visor covering the slow creeping blush over his face as his boyfriend smiled down at him.
Guilt bubbled in Lancelot’s chest as he admired his love in the dusk light. The light hit his partner’s quills perfectly, bringing out the soft light of his eyes. They captured Lancelot’s attention wholeheartedly.
“Like what you see?” Sonic asked lightly, pressing a small kiss to the forehead of Lancelot’s helmet. Lances face burned.
“My king- we should not be-“ Lancelot started, but he was cut off as Sonic lightly flipped up Lancelot’s visor and pressed his lips against the hedgehog’s below him.
As forbidden as this was, Lancelot had to admit: it was nice.
The guilt in his chest was buried by pure bliss and euphoria as the two parted slightly before diving back in, the touch and smell and feel of the other intoxicating. Lance’s arms snuck up and wrapped around Sonic’s neck, pulling the blue hedgehog down, deeper. Sonic welcomed the new touch, fully accepting the circumstances with a small hum of approval. The two shifted their heads, slowly getting more comfortable. Sonic dropped down to his forearms as Lancelot drifted his hands through Sonic’s quills.
It was at that second, Lancelot realized exactly what he was doing.
With difficulty, he pulled away, already missing the feel of Sonic as he got up.
“We mustn’t,” Lancelot muttered, throwing down the visor with a clunk. He held out a hand to help Sonic up, the warmth that enclosed his hand enough to make Lancelot want to pull him in all over again. But he resisted. “We cannot- it’s forbidden.”
“Lance, do you really think I would care about that?” Sonic said with a small laugh, trying to catch his love’s eye. Lancelot evaded the contact, determinedly staring into the sunset. Sonic fell into line, joining Lancelot at his side, looking into the distance with him.
Silence befell the two before Lancelot spoke, turning to face his king. Every word sounded like it had cost a lot for him to say it.
“What would the others think? What would everyone else think? A knight? Dating our king? It’s not allowed.” he said, turning back to stare into the endless horizon, biting the bottom of his lip in a nervous impulse.
Sonic considered for a moment, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
In his world, everyone was… pretty chill. There was none of all this hierarchy, monarchy stuff. Not having any particular expertise on this, Sonic turned to Lancelot.
“Well. What do you want to do?” Sonic posed the question. Lancelot went quiet. Rarely with the fake King Arthur was he asked for his opinion.
“I want… to stay with you.” He finally admitted, a quiet tone of joy normally unheard tinging his voice. “You make me feel worthy.”
Sonic smiled, although he caught the worry in the small flickering of Lancelot’s expression. “Don’t worry about it. The people here seem cool. Plus, let them talk. They’re just jealous that I got you as a boyfriend~” Sonic teased, chucking lightly. “Seriously though,” Sonic continued, “let’s try to figure something out about this whole ‘forbidden’ thing.”
As the sun finally retreated, the stars lazily coming out and winking down at the two thinking hedgehogs, they ended up leaned against a tree, leaning against each other.
Sonic yawned as he stared up at the sky, his hand intertwined with Lancelot’s as the two kept brainstorming.
“No options seem viable, but something will come to us,” Sonic muttered to himself as his eyes drifted closed, his head falling on Lancelot’s shoulder.
Lancelot simply lifted Sonic’s hand up to his lips and kissed the backside of it, before returning to staring out at the stars, content with where he was.
