Chapter Text
Parrot sorted through the stuff she bought with Jumper during their shopping trip today, they bought quite a lot of stuff. Although Parrot was a bit worried that she might have overspent a bit, she doesn’t really use her pocket money that often so she thinks she’ll be okay. Part of her was excited to start wearing skirts and dresses but at the same time she hasn’t told many people yet, Jumper and Rekrap know about it. She also recently told Derapchu and Spoke, who have both been really kind about it.
There was also someone that Parrot wanted to come out to, Wifies, he’s one of her closest friends and someone very special to her. She debated whether she should just send him a text or just tell him in person. In the end, she decided on doing so in person as she had school tomorrow and she could just do it then. She wasn’t worried that Wifies would be unsupportive, in fact she knew she’d be fine.
—
The last lesson that Parrot has today is chemistry, and coincidentally, she happens to share this class with Wifies. She smiled upon seeing her friend, but she ignored the way her heart raced and the reddening of her cheeks. They decided to walk to class together, since they’re going to the same place anyway.
“Can you walk home with me after school today?” Parrot asks.
Wifies nods in response. “Sure.”
This wasn’t an unusual thing for them as they go mostly the same way, in fact, they walk together quite often, and also because Parrot likes to seek out Wifies at any chance she gets for no particular reason at all.. Yep.
They make it to the chemistry room in a relatively short time, although they were here quite early as class starts in two minutes. Parrot looked around and she didn’t see any of their classmates here at all.
They waited for a bit and that’s when other people started showing up. Kenadian and Wato smiled and waved at the pair before walking towards them.
“Showing up early? Didn’t realise you were that excited, and for chemistry of all classes.” Ken teased with a smug grin.
Wifies's expression turned to one of dismay upon hearing that. “No way, I absolutely despise chemistry with a passion. Actually, don’t ever imply that I’d like this subject.”
Parrot softly giggled as she lightly punched Wifies’s arm. “Chemistry is not that bad. I think you’re just ass at it.”
Wifies pouts, he tried to come up with a retort but his mind blanked. He decided to not say anything instead. They all heard the bell rang, signaling that they all needed to go in the room. Wifies groaned while his friends exchanged glances and snickered at him. He really didn’t want to be here considering his absolute hatred for this subject but at least Parrot shared a class with him which made it just somewhat better. Honestly, to Wifies, just Parrot’s presence makes any situation better.
—
After a long, painfully, agonising hour, the bell finally rang again. Wifies breathed a sigh of relief as he put his books and pencil case into his bag. He probably spent more time staring at Parrot’s face rather than the whiteboard but that really isn’t his fault, his bird friend just has a pretty face that is way nicer to look at compared to the periodic table or whatever it was that was on the board. He closed his bag and looked over to his friends, they were now just waiting on Wato to finish packing up.
“Do you two want to walk home with me and Wifies?” Parrot inquires as she puts on her backpack. She didn’t mind also telling Ken and Wato, she trusted them to be supportive.
“We don’t go the same way, I think.” Ken replies, they remember that they and Wato usually go in the opposite direction after school. They don’t usually see Parrot walk the path they take.
The group of four split up into pairs at the gate, they waved each other goodbye as they went their separate ways. Parrot took a deep breath, she felt a bit nervous for what she was about to do, despite the fact she has done this before and it has gone well every single time. She knew Wifies wouldn’t react badly at all, she knew for a fact that he wouldn’t see her any differently, he would treat her the same as he had before.
Her friend had most likely noticed her sudden apprehension and shot her a worried look, although he remained silent. She gave him a small grin to reassure him that she is okay. His expression relaxed slightly however, he still seemed mildly concerned. Parrot decided that she should just tell him now so he doesn’t start getting anxious about her, she’d hate for some silly misunderstanding to happen.
“I kinda have something to tell you.” She starts.
Wifies nodded along, he showed that he was going to intently listen to what she had to say. Parrot thought carefully on her next words but realised she really didn’t have to, it’s better for her to just say it.
“Soo, I’m trans and I go by she/her. I’m still keeping the name Parrot by the way.” She started fidgeting with her sleeves as she waited for a response.
Wifies smiled at his friend as a way to comfort her, he assured her that he didn’t see her as any different than before she told him. He noticed the way she instantly loosened up, he was glad that this small gesture was able to calm her down.
“Thank you for telling me, I actually was a bit worried with how nervous you seemed. You know I’d support you no matter what, right?”
Parrot felt herself blushing. “I- I know, I honestly didn’t know why I was so nervous. I knew I’d be fine, it’s just..”
Wifies shakes his head in return. “No, it’s okay. I get it, this stuff is nerve wracking to say. I’m proud of you.”
“I was thinking of telling Ken and Wato as well but.. Actually, it’s fine, I’ll just text them when I get home.”
They changed the topic of conversation after that, they talked about random things and cracked jokes. Parrot always enjoyed Wifies’s company, just him being around brings her a sense of comfort and he’s just an overall fun person to hangout with.
“Oh, I go this way. See you tomorrow, Wifies.” Parrot waves before heading off.
Wifies waves back with a grin. “Bye Parrot!”
—
Genuinely, what do you do when you have a massive crush on one of your best friends who you’re not even sure feels the same way about you? That was a question that Wifies had pondered for a long ass time, and he still is nowhere near having an answer for it.
Parrot was someone he had met when he first started high school, unbeknownst to him though, he severely underestimated just how much she would mean to him. He remembered being intrigued by her when she sat down next to him on the first day, how she tried to awkwardly make small talk to him at first but they quickly got along when realising how much they had in common. Their personalities are somewhat similar yet different at the same time, they’re both intelligent people although their minds do differ in many aspects. He adores the way her eyes light up when she finds an answer or when she sees something she likes and he loves the way she gets flustered over compliments.
He’s hopelessly in love with Parrot. Although this wasn’t a new revelation, it has been like that for a while. Also, funnily enough, he has made literally zero progress with this crush of his. Call him a coward but he always had this looming fear that he’d ruin his current friendship with her. Losing Parrot would be the last thing he’d want, that would be like the equivalent of the sun exploding or something. Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic nevertheless, Wifies would say that it’s an accurate description on how it would feel like to him. On the other hand though, there was a part of him that wanted to tell Parrot, because there is a small chance that it could go well, he just doesn’t know his odds exactly.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his phone ringing, the sudden noise made him jump. Wifies sighed then grabbed his device from the table, he read the name on the screen and realised it was Derapchu calling him. He decided to answer as he wasn’t really doing anything at the moment. However, he wasn’t really sure why he was calling him all of a sudden.
“Hello?” Wifies spoke into the phone.
“Yo, I’m really bored and I need to yap to someone so..”
Oh, that was it. He just needed some entertainment.
“What were you doing before I called?” Derap continues.
Wifies contemplated for a moment whether telling Derapchu of all people about his little dilemma was a good idea. He hadn’t been directly revealing his crush on Parrot to his friends, he only admitted it to Ken and Wato just because they had joked about it to him and then realised that he actually liked her. Truthfully, Wifies will never forget his look of abject horror when the two first mentioned it, straight away, he started frantically asking them about how they found out. His friends were basically dying of laughter as they explained to him that it was extremely obvious.
“I was just… Uh, thinking.” He realised how doubtful he sounded and immediately regretted speaking. He’s definitely going to have to explain himself now.
“Mhm, and.. what were you thinking about?”
He is so screwed. Derapchu is undeniably onto him and there isn’t much he could say to get himself out of this but, he could at least try.
“Um, y’know.. stuff..” Wifies sheepishly responds. He essentially just dug a hole for himself.
There was no way his friend was buying it. Honestly, he could just bite the bullet and tell him. He really doesn’t know why he’s acting like this is some life changing secret, there isn’t much harm to revealing it except for the fact he was certainly going to get made fun of.
“Okay, I haven’t told many people this. There’s this.. person, that I’ve liked for a while. I was only wondering if I should ask her out.”
His friend on the call hummed in acknowledgement.
“Ohh, so that was what you didn’t wanna tell me?” Derapchu paused for a moment before speaking again. “Wait, can I guess who it is? I think I might know who.”
Wifies freezes. He wouldn’t put it past him if he were to guess correctly.
“..Sure.”
“Is it Parrot?” Derapchu asked. His tone was smug, he had absolute confidence in himself that he was right.
The worst thing is that he was correct, and he got it on the first try too. Maybe, Wato and Ken weren’t lying when they said it was obvious.
“Yeah.. How did you know? This is like the third time someone figured it out without me telling them.”
Wifies hears his friend laughing on the other end, probably at him.
“Bro, I’ll be real with you, pretty much our entire friend group knows. You are not slick. But honestly, just go for it. Waaait, I could be your wingman and help you.”
Derapchu playing cupid for him might actually be the worst thing that Wifies has ever heard in his life. Of all people he could intrust his love life to, it would not be him.
“Derap, please no.”
“Trust me, I’ll make sure you don’t fumble this. You’ll thank me later, I promise.”
Wifies did not feel reassured in the slightest, in fact, it made him feel all the more uneasy.
“No, I’m serious. Don’t.”
“Alright, fine. I won’t do anything.”
He’s aware that his friend has no bad intentions by any means, Derapchu is only trying to help him but he really does not want to suffer the consequences if his plan backfires horribly.
“But be honest, would you say it’s a good idea for me to ask her out? Do you think she likes me back?”
Maybe his question sounds a little stupid, nonetheless, getting an outside perspective would help him.
“Are you kidding? Yes! I’m not trolling when I say this, she a hundred percent likes you back, there is no doubt about it. I really think that there is no harm in you asking her out.” Derapchu nearly sounded like he was in disbelief at what he was asked.
However, Wifies wouldn’t say he was completely convinced. There was still a risk that his entire friendship with Parrot could be destroyed, but his odds of success do seem somewhat higher now. High enough for him to start thinking that he could try.
“I’ll consider it, maybe.”
“Wait, really?” Wifies could hear shuffling noises on the other end, Derap probably stood up in excitement.
To be honest, he wasn’t sure what went through his head when he said that he’d consider it, but he can’t really take those words back now. There was a sense of obligation weighing on him that suggests he can’t let his friend down, yet he never actually promised anything. He said maybe, not definitely.
They talked a bit more about other things on the phone but after a while, they decided to end the call as Wifies claimed that he was tired. Derapchu wished him good luck on confessing to Parrot, before hanging up.
Once again, Wifies is now left alone with his thoughts. Instead of thinking about it more though, he decides that he should head straight to bed. Perhaps, he’ll know what to do tomorrow.
—
Wifies woke up this morning, completely tired, having not slept well the night before. He tried his best to fall asleep but his brain just wouldn’t shut up about Parrot. He had an internal debate to himself about whether he should even show up to school today considering he might say something dumb and embarrass himself with how sleep deprived he is.
He still hasn’t made a decision on whether or not he should go through with asking his crush out, at the same time, he could always ask his friends, Ken and Wato for their input.
With great effort, he manages to lug himself to school where he tries his best to pretend he wasn’t running on like three hours or however many he got of sleep. Luckily for him, he immediately found the two people he needed to get advice from upon arrival.
“Did you sleep last night? You look like shit.” Wato remarks. Although, he did look worried for him.
Clearly, Wifies failed at acting like he wasn’t exhausted since he was exposed within like five seconds.
“Yeah, what happened?” Ken adds.
“Basically, I was on call with Derap yesterday. I kinda exposed my crush on you know who to him and then said that I might consider telling her. He encouraged me to go for it, so I may have spent all night overthinking about it which caused me to not fall asleep.” Wifies rambles.
He then remembers that he has an important question to ask the two.
“Okay, now be honest with me, do you guys think I should ask her out?”
Ken raised an eyebrow upon hearing that. “I mean it’s ultimately up to you, but if you were to ask me, I would say yeah.”
Wato nodded and agreed with them. “What Ken said.”
Wifies smiled. “Thanks guys, I appreciate it.”
—
Wifies was walking with his friends, Derapchu, Wato and Kenadian. They went out of the school building to see Parrot leaning against a wall while on her phone. He stopped in his tracks to look at his friends.
“I mean you don’t have to do it today, there’s no rush. Although, this is the perfect opportunity.” Ken reassures him.
“I doubt I’ll ever have the courage to again, I should go for it while I still do.”
Derap lightly shoves him forward. “Good luck.”
“I believe in you!” Wato cheers.
He looks back at his friends for encouragement one last time, before slowly walking towards Parrot. He’s not religious but he prays to god that what he is about to do will not damage his relationship with Parrot beyond repair.
He lightly taps her on the shoulder. “Hey.”
She looks up from her phone and smiles at him. “Oh, hi.”
“Wait, why are you just standing here anyways? Are you waiting for someone?”
“Derap texted me earlier saying that he wanted me to wait for him here after school, he still hasn’t shown up yet.”
Oh, so this was Derap’s doing. Wifies trusted him to not do anything but he supposed he could forgive him since he gave him such a good window of opportunity. Well, here goes nothing.
“Um, can I tell you something?” Great, real smooth start, Wifies.
Parrot nods and slides her phone into her trouser pocket. “Yeah, sure. What’s up?”
“So, I’ve kinda.. liked you for a while now and um I want to ask if you wanna go out with me. I- I know a nice cafe we could go to if that’s fine with you. Um, are you free on Saturday?” Wifies stammered. By some miracle, he managed to get all that out without running away. Honestly, he’s quite proud of himself.
Parrot stared at him and blinked, she didn’t say anything. Her silence filled him with utter dread, maybe this was a bad idea after all.
She smiled at him and gently brought a hand onto his cheek. “I like you too silly.”
Wifies has never felt more relieved in his life, like a massive weight has been lifted off his shoulders.
“I’m free on Saturday, I’d love to go to that cafe with you.”
Wifies touched the hand on his cheek. “Can I kiss you?”
Parrot blushed and nodded in response.
He moved his hand to slightly tilt her chin downwards towards him, he leaned in and their lips met. They pulled away quite quickly, Wifies grinned like an idiot.
The couple turned and saw three of their friends standing by them.
“Awww, that’s so cute.” Derap teased. There was a clear smirk on his face.
Parrot looked away and blushed even harder. “Bro, shut up.”
They proceeded to get made fun of by their friends relentlessly but Wifies couldn’t be any happier, Parrot feels the same way about him and that’s what mattered.
