eighteen: messy

Summary:

“I just spent the past eight and a half minutes trying to find that goddamn necklace, and I only found it eventually because it fell on the ground when I finally just shook the pile,” Kaz says flatly, eyes narrowed.
“Why’d you have to shake the pile?” Jesper wants to know. “I told you exactly where to find it —”
Kaz’s eyes flare. “— if you have to specify that it’s under a pile of shirts in your open top dresser drawer, there’s a
fucking problem, Jes.” He folds his arms.

Or,

Jesper and Kaz clean Jesper’s more chaotic side of their room.

Notes:

On the shorter side, but cute and fun regardless :)

Work Text:

“Jes, we have to talk,” Kaz stomps into the living room, shoving the necklace Jesper requested out of their room at him.

Jesper takes the necklace from him, quick fingers unlatching and then securing the lobster claw around his own neck, adjusting it to his liking. “About what?” he asks, maybe a little distractedly.

“Jes,” Kaz says sharply, and Jesper looks up at him.

“What?” he asks again, studying Kaz’s slightly red face.

“— if you have to specify that it’s under a pile of shirts in your open top dresser drawer, there’s a fucking problem, Jes.” He folds his arms.

Jesper thinks his boyfriend is just being petulant on purpose. He rolls his eyes. “Just because you’re a minimalist doesn’t mean all of our lives need to be that boring —”

“— it’s not boring, it’s reasonable —” Kaz defends himself instantly.

“— I happen to like all of my things, thank you very much,” Jesper shoots back, his hands finally leaving the necklace alone. He adjusts the belt securing his skirt to his waist.

Kaz stares at him, looking frustrated. “You won’t get rid of anything?” he stresses.

Jesper didn’t realize Kaz meant for him to get rid of his things. “Nope,” he puts his foot down, turning and flouncing to the door.

“Fine,” Kaz growls, following him out to the car. “Can we at least organize what you do have?”

Jesper throws himself into the passenger’s side. Kaz gets in next to him carefully. “...fine,” he agrees shortly.

Kaz nods and pulls out of the driveway.

They decide — after their date tonight — to dedicate Saturday, and Sunday if need be, to organizing Jesper’s side of the room.

Jesper doesn’t think it’ll take that long.

But the second Kaz picks up a pile of unmatched socks to reveal some jewelry Jesper thought he’d lost forever, he realizes that it just might take longer.

Kaz, for his part, is methodic the whole way. His careful hands sort laundry into various piles of different articles of clothing, occasionally glancing up at Jesper to ask, “What is this supposed to be?”

Jesper watches Kaz organize into various buckets and cups and containers and drawers and slots and boxes. He looks like he’s…having…fun? He has a light trace of a pleased smile on his lips, and his eyes shine every time he has to dump out a box to reorganize based on new information.

Is Kaz Brekker genuinely having fun organizing all this shit?

Jesper thinks he is.

“Maybe I should let it get this messy more often,” Jesper says casually as he swaps two of his necklaces on their hooks.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kaz asks distractedly.

“I mean, I haven’t seen you enjoy anything this much since we went to Wylan’s last concert,” Jesper admits, looking over at where his boyfriend’s face is starting to burn.

“I’m not enjoying it,” Kaz snaps, the visible enjoyment dripping off his mouth in an instant.

“It’s okay that you are,” Jesper tries.

“It would be okay, but I’m not,” Kaz insists.

“Uh huh,” Jesper mutters to himself, putting backs on four pairs of earrings after he found a treasure trove of them in a small bowl next to his jewelry cabinet.

Kaz doesn’t say anything again, but when Jesper glances at him maybe ten minutes later while he rearranges Jesper’s sock drawer, that little smile is back.

It’s cute to see on him, and, quite frankly, it’s hilarious to Jesper right now that this is what’s getting Kaz to start to grin like that.

When they finish organizing everything on Jesper’s side of the room and closet — Mr. Minimalist’s side doesn't need anything done to it, and it never does, and it probably never will — Kaz brushes his hands off like he handled something exceptionally dusty. “Done. Keep it this way, yeah?”

Jesper stops him from leaving the room by saying, in a hesitant voice, “I don’t know, everything feels…off.” He looks at where Kaz is staring at him.

Kaz sighs deeply. “Fine. Hang a shirt or two out of your dresser drawer,” he orders, pointing.

Jesper does, unsure what that has to do with anything.

But it seems Kaz knew what he was talking about, because it actually does ease some of the Offness™ that seemed to linger until he did it.

He smiles at Kaz for the suggestion.

Kaz rolls his eyes before leaving the room.

Jesper follows him out after turning one of his jewelry boxes to be crooked on the top of the dresser.
