Work Text:
Andromeda knows that life changes like the tides. Sometimes there will be highs and other times there will be lows. She cannot recall the last time she has felt so high. Head in the clouds, walking on air, a small soft smile gracing her lips. It’s almost ridiculous.
She cannot recall the last time she was late for class either but alas.
“Miss Black, how good of you to join us—” Slughorn voices from behind his desk, “—please, have a seat. We were just about to begin revising the steps to brewing Amortentia.” The older man makes a small noise as he gets up and gestures to the empty seat in the second row. Andromeda’s eyes follow his hand then jump to the man with a yellow tie sitting in the seat next to it. She quickly makes her way to the seat without a fuss.
Organising her things takes but a moment, though she can feel those eyes following her every move. “Missed you,” he whispered from beside her, a playful lit to his voice, “How was your morning?”
She bites her inner lip to contain the smile pushing its way out. Her eyes find him in a simple glance, only to refuse to leave again. “You would know all about my morning, Tonks,” she mutters quietly under her breath, her voice steady and sure. Ted gives her the most beautiful smile in return, a slightly self satisfied look in his eyes.
“Yes,” he murmurs, his smile almost blinding her, “I do seem to recall how you woke in my arms this morning and refused to leave, despite the fact that I warned you we would be late.” He speaks to her in low tones, his amusement clear in his voice.
Andromeda scowls a little, “And yet, only one of us was late.”
Ted’s smile widens further, a small peal of laughter slipping out between his lips, “It’s not my fault you didn’t heed my warning, darling.” He visibly bites his lip to quell his quiet chuckling, “But hey, look on the bright side—” he glances about the room and Andromeda can’t help but do the same—nobody is paying any attention to them—before Ted leans a little closer to her, “—we get to sit together today. I get to stare at your beautiful face and wondrous mind with nothing around to stop me.”
That manages to pull a small smile onto her lips. She turns away, her cheeks heating slightly as a blush forms on them. “You do that anyway,” she teases quietly, her eyes flicking back to his underneath her lashes.
Ted visibly softens, his hand finding hers under the desk. He interlaces their fingers together and Andy cannot help but smile reflectively when he squeezes her hand gently, “Well yes, yes I do.”
Perhaps her head in the clouds was too low, Andromeda feels like she is on the doorstep to heaven. She can’t help but think she belongs here, at Ted’s side. She would be happy here. So happy. Andromeda cannot help but hope that her parents will accept her love for Ted, a muggleborn.
If not, well, Andromeda has always had a backup plan.
She looks down at their joined hands. Ted gently drawing circles on the back of her hand with his thumb. The warmth and weight of his hand in hers. The feel of him next to her. The look in his eyes, as if she is the only thing he will ever want to see, the only thing he will need to see.
Yes. She is happy.
