Chapter 1: Boyfriend for a Day [Part 1]

Chapter Text

Boyfriend for a Day

Suo x Sakura

It was an understatement to call Suo a gentleman…he was more akin to a prince, a prince written in a fairy tale, even. He seemed to embody the sentiments of elegance and grace, his movements, in a fight or simply idle, were swift and calculated. Even the tone of his voice held the air of a regal confidence, wrapped in silk and dawned with serenity. It was no wonder, then, that he attracted so many admirers, the sight of his tassel earrings enough to send many into a fanatic frenzy.

Women, especially, found Suo to be the object of their fantasies, the knight in shining armor to their damsel in distress. He had managed to create a cult-like following, their devotion and loyalty unwavering, yet still respectful and held at a distance. Tokens of appreciation found Suo in the forms of complementary cups of tea, personally baked delicacies, and beautifully written, though lengthy, love letters; though he was doted on so often, however, it was interesting to his friends that he never seemed to reciprocate their affections.

“Hayato-kun,” the flirty voice of a cafe employee called. “Make sure to come and have a cup of tea with me tomorrow!”

Suo lightly chuckled, turning to the voice, his hands held softly behind his back. “I’ll certainly try, Ito-san.”

Sakura gazed at the boy, out of the corner of his eyes, peeking behind his shaggy, black and white bangs. Suo seemed to flirt without even trying, simply the sound of his voice was enough to make women swoon; did he do this on purpose, or was this simply his personality? Sakura still didn’t have the answer, even after knowing him for around six months now…nor did he know why he even cared.

“That’s the fourth time this week.” Nirei commented, his head buried in his phone, the sound of blasting and recharging heard through his earbud. “What do you guys do when you go and see her?”

“She just likes to talk, honestly. I listen to her talk about her day.” Suo responded, turning forward to walk with the others.

Suo’s popularity was a constant source of fascination for both Nirei and Sakura, the latter finding it to be ridiculous and the former finding it to be inspirational, his notebook lined with jotted down notes from his observations.

Walking along the sidewalk, school having just been dismissed, the group of boys almost hadn’t noticed a girl coming in the opposite direction, their attention focused on Suo and his admirers; that was, until Suo’s attention was drawn to a tapping sound against the pavement, the aglet of her shoelace being tossed up, with every step.

“Miss,” he started, moving in front of her. “Your shoelace is untied.”

Seemingly, in one instant movement, Suo had bent down and began tying the shoe for her. The girl immediately froze, grasping at the straps of her backpack as she stuttered out a flustered ‘thank you.’

He looked back up at her, his small, delicate smile causing her to blush furiously. “Wouldn’t want you falling, now would we?”

“How does he keep doing this…” Nirei snickered, the interaction’s timing causing him amusement.

His comment only reached Sakura, who blankly watched the scene unfold, a tightened feeling spreading throughout his chest. He didn’t quite understand what this sensation was or why he seemed to only feel it in response to Suo…he just knew he didn’t like it.

There was something in the way that Suo had the ability to romanticize the simplest of actions; it was a part of his charm. Even now, the way he knelt before her, his grace as ritualistic and poised, as if he were worshipping a god, gave the feeling of a romantic gesture. It was so…annoying.

“Okay prince charming,” Nirei laughed, the girl scurrying past the three boys. “You don’t have to show off.”

Suo looked back at him, brushing off the knee of his pants. “Show off? I would never, Nirei-kun.”

“Like hell you wouldn’t… What was all that for?” Sakura groaned, rolling his eyes; his hands were in his pockets, pressing his nails into his palms.

“I simply saw a girl with untied shoe laces.” Suo shrugged, the boys continuing on their walk. “Nothing more to it.”

“You could have just pointed it out, instead of instantly tying them for her.”

Suo’s unpatched eye looked at Sakura, his smile melting into a line, as he raised an eyebrow. He took note of the uncharacteristic frustration that crept onto his face…well, uncharacteristic because Suo hadn’t done anything to annoy him. Or had he?

“Is this on purpose?” Nirei teased, nudging Suo with his arm. “Trying to woo every woman you come across?” Before Suo could laugh out a rejection to the claim, Nirei kept going. “Say, why don’t you have a girlfriend yet, Suo-kun? Clearly you have a lot of admirers.”

“...Guess I’m waiting for someone interesting enough.”

There was a subtle silence between the boys, the sound of cars and people’s chatter filling the space.

“I suppose that’s fair.” Nirei shrugged, with a thoughtful expression. “It’ll happen soon enough. Lots of girls can see you’d make a good boyfriend.”

“Tch.” Sakura scoffed.

Both boys looked over at Sakura, eyeing him curiously. He seemed to be in a bit of a sour mood, though it wasn’t unusual; romantic conversations and interactions made him unbelievably flustered and uncomfortable.

“You don’t think so, Sakura-kun?” Nirei laughed in response, his eyebrows furrowing together.

A mischievous look flickered in Suo’s auburn eye. “You doubt me, though I’m sure I could change your opinion.”

Sakura’s eyes flew to Suo, who gazed at him with a slight smirk, making Sakura blush in defense.

Nirei attempted to suppress a laugh, looking between the two; he had to pounce on this opportunity. “Care to elaborate?”

Slowly coming to a halt, Suo’s mischievous grin increased in size, the look sending a shiver down Sakura’s spine, while also making Nirei excited. He couldn’t hold back his anticipation, waiting attentively for Suo’s response. One thing about both boys, they loved to tease Sakura.

“Let me be your boyfriend for a day.”

The words came out of Suo’s mouth smoothly, without missing a beat, but the effect that it had on Sakura was devastating. In that moment, he felt as if he genuinely would die.

“Are-are you crazy!? I’m not playing your games!” Sakura screamed, viscerally jerking away from the two boys, Nirei nearly doubled over in laughter.

“Come on, Sakura!” He jeered. “You know how many people would kill to be in your shoes?”

Nirei’s laughter only seemed to embarrass him more, his stomach beginning to bubble with nausea. “I’m not doing anything with this jerk!”

“I’ll take that as a yes then.” Suo giggled, stepping closer before leaning into Sakura. “See you tomorrow, cutie~.”
