Ashes of Trust

Summary:

“Because I still love you,” Pearl choked out, falling to her knees. “Because I thought if I could save what’s left of your world, maybe I could save you. Even if you hate me.”

Gem’s fingers trembled. “I do hate you.”

Pearl smiled bitterly. “I know.”

“I hate you for lying. For leaving me to drown in the mess you made. For… for making me need you.”

She knelt too, her forehead pressed against Pearl’s. “But gods help me, I would burn again just to have you look at me like you used to.”

Chapter 1: Ashes of Trust

Chapter Text

Lightning split the sky above the Wild Woods, the storm rolling in like a curse whispered by the world itself. Gem stood at the gates of her ruined citadel, cloak torn and heart heavier than the stones that once formed her sanctuary. The betrayal still echoed in her bones. Pearl had done the unthinkable. She had handed Gem's secrets, her defenses, her tactics to the enemy. Not for power. Not for gain. But to protect her. At least, that's what she claimed.

"You don't understand!" Pearl had cried that night, rain pouring as if the heavens were weeping too. "They were going to destroy you! I had to make a deal. I had to save you!" Gem had looked her dead in the eyes, thunder rumbling overhead. "You saved me by burning down everything I built? That wasn't saving, Pearl. That was annihilation." And then she left.

The storm raged on, its fury mirroring the turmoil in Gem's heart. She couldn't understand how Pearl could betray her so deeply. The memories of their time together, the laughter, the whispers, the stolen kisses – all seemed like a lie now. Gem's mind was a maze of emotions, her thoughts tangled in a web of anger, hurt, and confusion.

Weeks passed. Pearl was gone, disgraced, wandering the outer lands, her name now met with fury in every corner of the Wild Woods. Gem tried to bury the memories. The night spent beneath the stars, fingers laced. The whispered promises. The kiss stolen during a siege. The way Pearl had once said, "I'd burn the world before I let it take you." She hadn't realized Pearl meant it literally.

But the memories refused to be buried. They haunted Gem, taunting her with what could have been. She couldn't help but wonder if she had been blind to Pearl's true intentions. Had she been so caught up in her own feelings that she had ignored the warning signs?

As the days turned into weeks, Gem's anger began to simmer down, replaced by a deep sadness. She had loved Pearl with all her heart, and now that love seemed like a distant memory. She wondered if she would ever be able to forgive Pearl, or if their love was truly lost forever.

But fate had other plans. When the remnants of the North rose again – twice as strong, vengeful and cruel – Gem's forces were cornered. Outnumbered. Lost. The enemy seemed unstoppable, and Gem's heart was filled with despair.

Until the fire came. Until she came. Pearl, shrouded in soot and fury, her eyes glowing with rage, rode in alone. With her came destruction, an inferno of vengeance, unstoppable. She fought like a woman with nothing left to lose, her sword slicing through the enemy lines with deadly precision.

Gem watched in awe as Pearl cut through the chaos, her movements fluid and deadly. She was a force of nature, a whirlwind of fury and fire. The enemy didn't stand a chance against her, and soon they were fleeing in terror.

When the battle ended, and the ashes settled, Gem found Pearl in the field, bleeding, burned, but alive. Gem's heart skipped a beat as she rushed to Pearl's side, her emotions in turmoil.

"You came back," Gem said, voice cracking like glass under pressure. Pearl didn't look at her, her eyes fixed on the ground.

"I didn't come for forgiveness," Pearl said, her voice barely above a whisper. Gem's heart sank, her hopes dashed.

"Then why?" Gem stepped closer, heart thundering louder than the flames had. Pearl's eyes flickered up, meeting Gem's gaze.

"Because I still love you," Pearl choked out, falling to her knees. "Because I thought if I could save what's left of your world, maybe I could save you. Even if you hate me."

Gem's fingers trembled as she reached out, her hand hovering over Pearl's shoulder. "I do hate you," Gem said, her voice cold.

Pearl smiled bitterly, her eyes filling with tears. "I know," she said, her voice cracking. Gem's heart broke at the sight of Pearl's tears, her anger melting away.

"I hate you for lying," Gem said, her voice barely above a whisper. "For leaving me to drown in the mess you made. For... for making me need you."

She knelt too, her forehead pressed against Pearl's. "But gods help me, I would burn again just to have you look at me like you used to."

Their lips met in a desperate, messy kiss, stained with ash and tears. It wasn't forgiveness. It wasn't peace. But it was real.

As they broke apart, gasping for air, Gem's eyes locked onto Pearl's. She saw the same desperation, the same longing reflected back at her. They knew that their love was far from over. In fact, it

--

As they sat there, wrapped in each other's arms, the storm raging around them seemed to fade into the background. The world, with all its chaos and destruction, melted away, leaving only the two of them, lost in the intensity of their emotions.

Gem's fingers tangled in Pearl's hair, pulling her closer, deepening the kiss. Pearl's lips were warm, inviting, and Gem felt herself getting lost in the sensation. The ash and soot on Pearl's skin mingled with the tears on Gem's cheeks, a bitter reminder of the pain they had both endured.

But even in the midst of that pain, there was a spark of hope. A spark that had been flickering between them for weeks, maybe even months. A spark that had been waiting for the right moment to ignite into a flame.

As they broke apart for air, Gem's eyes met Pearl's, and she saw the same spark reflected back at her. It was a spark of love, of passion, of desire. It was a spark that seemed to say, "We may have been broken, but we're not beyond repair."

Pearl's hand cupped Gem's face, her thumb tracing the curve of her cheekbone. "I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the storm. "I'm sorry for everything."

Gem's eyes closed, and she leaned into Pearl's touch. "I know," she said, her voice equally soft. "I know you are."

Their lips met again, this time with a tenderness that belied the storm raging around them. It was a kiss that spoke of forgiveness, of understanding, of love. It was a kiss that said, "We'll face the future together, no matter what it brings."

As the storm slowly began to subside, Gem and Pearl sat there, wrapped in each other's arms, their hearts beating as one. They knew that their love was far from perfect, that it had been tested and tried by the fires of war and betrayal. But they also knew that their love was real, and that it would endure, no matter what the future held.

In that moment, Gem knew that she would forgive Pearl, not for Pearl's sake, but for her own. She knew that she would take Pearl back, not because she was weak, but because she was strong enough to admit her own vulnerabilities. And she knew that their love would be reborn, forged in the fire of their passion and their pain.

As the darkness began to recede, Gem smiled, her lips still touching Pearl's. "Let's rebuild," she whispered, her voice full of promise.

Pearl's eyes sparkled with tears, and she nodded, her lips curving into a smile. "Together," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

And as they stood up, hand in hand, the storm finally beginning to clear, Gem knew that their love would rise from the ashes, stronger and more resilient than ever before.

---

The days after the battle were filled with smoke and silence. The Wild Woods bore fresh scars – blackened trunks, scorched earth, the distant echo of mourning. But in the ruins of the old citadel, where the heart of Gem's kingdom had once beat strong, two women began to build again.

Pearl refused to take shelter in the main hall. She slept under the open sky, her wounds barely stitched, tending the fires herself, chopping fallen trees, stacking stone. She said little. Apologies had already been spoken in flame. Now she spoke with action.

Gem watched her for days, mesmerized by the way Pearl's muscles flexed as she worked. She saw the determination in Pearl's eyes, the fire that burned within her. It was a fire that had driven Pearl to save Gem's kingdom, to fight for what was left of it.

Gem didn't know how to begin, not really. Not after everything. She had been hurt, betrayed, and yet, she couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for Pearl's strength, her resilience. She didn't know if she could ever fully trust Pearl again, but she knew she wanted to try.

One morning, Gem walked out, rolled up her sleeves, and silently took the other end of a beam Pearl was trying to lift. They moved together without words, their hands touching as they worked. For the first time in weeks, Pearl met Gem's eyes, and Gem felt a spark of connection.

It was a small moment, but it was a start. As they worked side by side, Gem began to notice the little things about Pearl – the way she smiled when she was concentrating, the way her hair curled slightly at the nape of her neck. She felt a flutter in her chest, a sense of attraction that she couldn't ignore.

Pearl, too, seemed to be aware of Gem's presence, her eyes flicking towards her as they worked. There was a tension between them, a tension that wasn't just about the physical labor they were doing. It was a tension that spoke of unresolved emotions, of unspoken words.

As the days turned into weeks, Gem and Pearl worked together, rebuilding the citadel, rebuilding their relationship. They didn't talk much, but they didn't need to. Their actions spoke louder than words, and slowly but surely, they began to rebuild the trust that had been lost.

One evening, as they sat by the fire, Gem reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair out of Pearl's face. It was a small gesture, but it spoke volumes. Pearl's eyes met Gem's, and for a moment, they just looked at each other, the world around them melting away.

Then, without a word, Pearl leaned in, her lips brushing against Gem's in a soft, gentle kiss. It was a kiss that spoke of love, of forgiveness, of new beginnings. Gem felt her heart skip a beat as she wrapped her arms around Pearl, deepening the kiss.

As they broke apart, gasping for air, Gem smiled, her eyes shining with tears. "I think we can rebuild," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Pearl smiled back, her eyes sparkling with hope. "Together," she said, her voice full of promise.

And as they sat there, wrapped in each other's arms, the ruins of the citadel seemed a little less daunting, a little more hopeful. They knew that they had a long way to go, but they were ready to face it together, side by side.

---

They began rebuilding the citadel together, stone by stone, scar by scar. Not to recreate the past, but to forge something new. The sun beat down on them as they worked, its warm rays a stark contrast to the cold, dark emotions that had driven them apart.

Pearl carved runes into the doorframe, her hands steady despite the burns that still lingered on her skin. She worked with a precision that Gem had always admired, her fingers moving deftly as she etched the intricate symbols into the stone.

"Protection spells," she murmured, her eyes focused on the task at hand. "No one gets through without you knowing."

Gem looked up from where she was laying mortar, her gaze meeting Pearl's as she worked. There was a question in her eyes, one that Pearl seemed to sense without needing to be asked.

"Not even you?" Gem asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Pearl's smile was faint, a small, tentative curve of her lips. "Especially not me," she said, her eyes flicking up to meet Gem's.

Gem felt a flutter in her chest, a sense of vulnerability that she hadn't expected. It wasn't forgiveness, not yet. But it was trust, beginning again. Trust that Pearl would protect her, would keep her safe from harm.

As they worked, the tension between them began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of camaraderie, of working together towards a common goal. They moved in tandem, their hands touching as they worked, the physical contact sending sparks of electricity through Gem's body.

She couldn't help but notice the way Pearl's hair curled slightly at the nape of her neck, the way her eyes crinkled at the corners as she smiled. It was a smile that Gem had seen before, but it was one that she hadn't seen in a long time. A smile that spoke of happiness, of joy.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the citadel, Gem and Pearl stepped back to admire their work. The stones were rough, the mortar still wet, but there was something beautiful about it, something that spoke of new beginnings.

Pearl's hand brushed against Gem's, their fingers tangling together as they stood there, looking out over the citadel. It was a small gesture, but it spoke volumes. Gem felt a sense of connection, of belonging, that she hadn't felt in a long time.

She turned to Pearl, her eyes meeting hers in the fading light. There was a question in her gaze, one that Pearl seemed to sense without needing to be asked.

Without a word, Pearl leaned in, her lips brushing against Gem's in a soft, gentle kiss. It was a kiss that spoke of love, of forgiveness, of new beginnings. Gem felt her heart skip a beat as she wrapped her arms around Pearl, deepening the kiss.

As they broke apart, gasping for air, Gem smiled, her eyes shining with tears. "I think we're going to be okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Pearl smiled back, her eyes sparkling with hope. "I think you might be right," she said, her voice full of promise.

And as they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, the citadel seemed a little less daunting, a little more hopeful. They knew that they had a long way to go, but they were ready to face it together, side by side.

One night, Gem woke from a nightmare – flames licking at the walls, screams in her ears. She sat up with a start, her heart racing, and the familiar feeling of panic washed over her. She threw off the covers and staggered out of the half-built tower, the cool night air a welcome respite from the suffocating darkness of her dreams.

As she walked through the citadel, the moon casting eerie shadows on the stones, she saw Pearl standing by the outer wall, keeping watch. Gem's heart skipped a beat as she saw the familiar silhouette, the broad shoulders and the determined stance.

"I thought I lost you again," Gem whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. She wrapped her arms tight around herself, trying to ward off the chill of fear that still lingered.

Pearl stepped close, her eyes filled with concern, and her movements unsure. "You didn't," she said, her voice soft and reassuring. "I'm right here."

Gem looked up at her, the moonlight catching the old wounds on Pearl's face, and saw not a traitor, but a woman shaped by fire. A woman who had been burned, scarred, and yet still stood strong.

"I'm afraid I still might," Gem admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. She felt vulnerable, exposed, and Pearl's presence was the only thing that seemed to calm her racing heart.

Pearl took her hand, her calloused palm warm and grounding. "Then let me stay," she said, her voice filled with conviction. "Let me be whatever you need. I won't ask for love. I won't ask for what I burned."

Gem looked at her, her eyes searching for answers. She saw the sincerity in Pearl's gaze, the determination to make things right. And in that moment, she knew that she couldn't push Pearl away.

"I don't know what this is anymore," Gem admitted, her voice filled with uncertainty. She felt lost, torn between her love for Pearl and her fear of being hurt again.

Pearl squeezed her hand, her touch sending shivers down Gem's spine. "Then let's find out," she said, her voice filled with hope. "Together."

As they stood there, the moonlight casting a silver glow over the citadel, Gem felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that she still had doubts, still had fears, but with Pearl by her side, she felt like she could face anything.

Without a word, Pearl pulled Gem close, her arms wrapping around her in a warm, comforting hug. Gem felt her tension melt away, her heart beating in time with Pearl's. It was a moment of intimacy, of connection, and Gem knew that she couldn't let go of this chance.

As they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, Gem felt a spark of hope ignite within her. Maybe, just maybe, they could rebuild their love, their relationship, and their future. Together.

Love, like fire, destroys.
But from ashes, new things grow.

And in the heart of the Wild Woods, two souls began again no longer trying to return to what was, but daring to believe in what could be.
