Chapter 1: Guess I'm doing this
Chapter Text
A cool breeze blew through the Seaside city. It was relatively cold, considering it came from the vast ocean that gave the city its name, but the midday sun gleamed such a comfortable warmth that it contemplated the breeze nicely as its people walked along its sprawling streets, going about their day.
It looked like any other normal day for Silver, but as someone who travelled from an ever changing future and had faced down threats from ethereal gods to the metallic undead, normal barely meant anything to him.
Oh, that and today he was taking Espio; Detective, Chameleon, Ninja, and quite possibly the coolest person he ever knew on a date.
He had planned it out countless times in his head, going off of advice from friends who actually had romantic experiences and definitely knew what they were doing: First he would start small and simple, and take Espio to a local tea shop. Then, the two would enter the City Library to browse, and maybe pick up some gardening books Silver wanted to read so he could figure out how to plant apple trees in the Restoration’s garden. Finally, ice cream in a picturesque park to end the day. Silver sighed: This would (hopefully) be a walk in the park, pun intended.
Blaze noticed him fidgeting as they walked, and calmly placed a hand on his shoulder, “I am certain your date will be absolutely impeccable.”
Silver looked at her and gave a confident smile. “I know, but it’s not exactly fancy or anything, are you sure that going small was the best?”
Blaze smiled confidently, “Silver, the way I see it…” She paused to consider her words; “You and Espio really care about each other, so I'm sure he will enjoy your company regardless. I mean my knowledge on romantic relationships isn't exactly consummate but…”
Silver looked at her and blinked. “C-Consummate?” He innocently asked, “You mean like, having ‘consumed’ a lot of knowledge?”
Blaze let out a light-hearted chuckle, “Close! It means exceptional in knowledge.” Silver facepalmed himself, laughing as the two walked onto the path leading to the Chaotix’s Detective Agency.
“The point is,” Blaze continued as the two walked up to the Chaotix’s door “The point is…. think of this relationship as your victory garden: you don’t want to rush its development do you?” Silver shook his head in agreement, “This relationship you want is like your many plants and trees and vegetation you want to see grow and flourish: it's better to tend to it with small, patient efforts over time than to rush in boldly. To let them naturally… flourish.” She concluded eloquently as Silver began to smile.
Sure, like you know anything about truly loving someone like that, you charlatan. An unwelcome thought bolted in Blaze’s mind, trying to force her to confront it. She ignored it.
Silver nodded, a confident grin plastering his face. “Of course!” he grinned, “Me and Espio love gardening! We both know how long it takes to care for them and make them grow, so we’ll both know that we need to take things nice and slow. Blaze you are an actual genius! Like, you must have an IQ of, like, 8000!” He beamed as the two reached the door.
“Ha!” Blaze exclaimed, having been cheered up, “You really know how to compliment someone!”. “No wonder Espio fell for you.” Silver blushed as the two reached the door. “Are you ready?” Blaze asked.
“Nope!” Silver beamed as he rang the doorbell.
The door swung open; “Silver! How’s it been buddy you look smashing as always!” Vector said in his loud, expressive voice. “And Blaze, it’s been ages, how have you been?”
Blaze couldn't help but smile, “I have been well,” She said politely, “We must catch up.”
“No kidding!” Vector exclaimed as he gave a toothy grin, “But first things first,” He turned his attention to Silver, who was already beginning to sweat bullets. “Let me get the man of the hour: HEY ESPIO: THERE’S SOMEONE SPECIAL HERE TO SEE YOU!” He bellowed, his voice echoing into the house. “It's not my Kunai dealer isn’t it?” A certain stoic voice rang out as faint footsteps were heard, “I swear he wasn’t due in until tomorro-” Espio paused suddenly, clearly caught off guard for once when he saw Silver, the hedgehog he was dating, “S-Silver.” the ninja detective exclaimed, “You’re here.”
“Hehe; Surprise!” Silver nervously cheered, throwing up jazz hands to cover up his intensely nervous blush. It kind of helped that Espio had turned a deep pink as he blushed.
“Alright! Now it's time for you two lovebirds to hit the trail!” Vector joked gleefully; “That tea is gonna get cold at this rate and I have ‘important’ detective work to sleuth out, so hop to it!” He grinned as he patted Espio on the back, clearly enjoying the dad-embarrassment he caused in the usually composed ninja. “Oh and make sure the kid gets back before 7:30 yeah? Don’t want him to miss his dinner!” The crocodile grinned as he continued to look at Silver.
“O-oh cause sir!” Espio stammered, joining Silver, “Shall we?”
“Oh ahhhh… s-sure lead the way” Silver stuttered, equally flustered and not totally out of his depth.
“Hey if you bump into that rabbit lady tell her Vector says ‘Hi’,” An boisterous buzzing voice called out, “He reeeeeeeeally likes her you know!!!”
Vector spluttered loudly, barely covering up his karmic embarrassment; “C-CHARMY!” He exclaimed. “I told you before, there’s nothing weird between me and Vanilla!”
“So THAT’S her name!” The young voice audibly smirked, “Vector and Vanilla, sitting in a tree…”
“Gah!” Vector groaned as he rushed inside, “KEEP IT UP KID AND THERE WILL BE NO VIDEO GAMES AFTER DINNER!” He clamoured.
Blaze couldn’t help but burst into laughter after seeing this, “I shall also leave you too it.” She smiled, quickly embracing Silver, “I’ll see you both this evening. Oh, and try the fish themed ice cream. I highly recommend it.” She nodded before entering the Chaotix’s office (and home), and closing the door. Espio and Silver stared at each other, two people who clearly had never dated before and had no idea what they were doing, but were dating anyway because they were madly in love with each other.
Yep. The two thought at the same time; Guess I’m doing this.
“So I guess business has been good for you?” Blaze politely enquired.
She and Vector were lounging in the Chaotix’s main office, drinking from the coffee machine that had served the detective agency well. It was worn and was several years old, reflecting the state of the Detective agency’s main office, but it still served fresh coffee and other hot drinks so it wasn’t like Vector was in a rush to fix it or upgrade.
“Yeah, things have been looking up for us,” Vector replied confidently, looking over to Charmy who was sitting at a table in the corner of the room, “We’ve been on a lucky streak lately with a few high paying cases. And just in time too, there were some bills that needed covering, so that one less thorn in our side. Plus having some extra cash to treat the boys wouldn't hurt.”
Blaze pondered for a second, sipping the coffee from her mug, and smiled, “Well it’s good to hear that you're finally getting on top of things,” She then smirked, “Maybe you could use this opportunity to do something nice for Vanilla?”
Vector nearly choked,“I-It’s more complicated than that!” He began to stammer, clearly thrown off by Blaze’s innocent suggestion, “She just cooked dinner for us a couple times, y’know, to say thanks and all after we babysat Cream a few times, that’s all!”
“Sure.” Blaze smiled.
Vector was exasperated, “Damn, first Charmy now you? It’s not like you to tease me about my so-called ‘dating life’. It’s not that big of a deal, just being nice that’s all.” He sheepishly responded, before playfully retorting, “I bet you have some fun dating stories, eh?”
“I have.” Blaze answered a bit too quickly. Really? Like you ever stood a chance, like you’ll never know how to truly love someone like Silver does. More self-doubt trying to worm its way back into her mind. She pushed back, forcing it away for now.
Vector noticed Blaze's discomfort, his face wrought with concern, “Ah, sorry. I shouldn’t have tried to push you into talking about something that personal.”
“No no, it’s fine! If anything, I shouldn’t have teased you in the first place.” Blaze reassured, still a bit too quickly. Vector, being the great detective he was, knew something was still up, “You’re worried about Silver and Espio’s date aren’t you?”
Blaze sighed heavily, this wasn’t the only issue she was facing in this romantic regard, but she welcomed another issue to throw Vector off, “I trust Silver to ensure his date runs smoothly, and I know he and Espio care for each other immensely but…” She paused briefly, choosing her words again, “but what if something else were to happen, like some external factors like potential rain or if the library doesn't have those books he wants, or…”
Vector quickly broke her off “Hey hey, chill out alright, things are gonna work out.” he continued, speaking softly and calmly, “Look, maybe one of two things might happen, but those too can handle themselves; it's not the end of the world if.. y’know…” Vector paused, the gears in his head beginning to turn faster and faster as he tried (and failed) to look calm.
Blaze was apprehensive, “You're worried about them too, right?” She responded, trying to compose herself.
“OH MY GOSH, YES!” Vector nearly yelled, “We need to tail them right now, and make sure their date goes flawlessly!” He sputtered as he and Blaze hurriedly left their office, “It’s the least we can do for them without literally getting too involved in their business!”
“But I thought you two were, like, totally chill about those ‘lovebirds’ day going well and wanted to get out of their hair.” Charmy smirked, looking up from the schoolwork he was totally (not) invested in as the two passed by him.
“Charmy I will buy you pizza takeout tonight if you help me and Blaze with those two ‘lovebirds’ and their date.” Vector insisted as he fumbled for his house keys.
“You had me at; ‘Charmy I will buy you pizza takeout tonight’!” Charmy cheered, literally buzzing with excitement at doing something actually fun. “Alright let’s do this: Let’s make Espiver official!” He exclaimed, punching his fist into the air.
Blaze and Vector stared blankly.
“Espiver? It's like their ship name… like a combination of their names to show how in love they are.” Charmy said as if it wasn’t the most obvious thing ever, “Blaze you’ve heard of ships right? You hang out with Amy, like, all the time and she talks about this stuff non-stop, especially with anime. She’s the one who came up with Espiver y’know.” The bee finished.
Vector blinked, “I-I-I don’t know how to respond to this,” He blurted, “L-let’s just make sure Silver and Espio don’t like, die from embarrassment or whatever. Now come on!” The lead detective yelled as the trio ran out the house, “Let’s make their date the best date in the history of dating ever!”
Chapter 2: A Warmth Fire cannot Compensate for
Summary:
Silver and Espio's date goes off to a great start. Meanwhile, things literally heat up for Blaze, Vector and Charmy in an unexpected way.
Chapter Text
“This tea is amazing!” Silver exclaimed as he drank it quickly, or at least as quickly as you could without bringing yourself. “What flavor is this: cinnamon and honey?”
“It is.” Espio responded, and he couldn't help but smile. The two had made it to the local japanese themed tea shop he had recommended. It was small but cosy, and the midday sun filtered through the nearby windows, billowing the homely atmosphere of the living room furniture that the two sat on. “It’s the perfect combination of soothing and sweetness that helps calm the soul and mind.” The chameleon explained poetically.
“The tea really is that sweet, just like you!” Silver beamed.
Espio was taken aback, surprised by this cute remark. Did Silver just flirt with him? His skin turned a bright pink briefly before he quickly composed himself. Silver just stared with amazement, his mouth widening.
“You… can change colour?!” He blurted with awe. “That’s AMAZING! How come you’ve never shown this off?”
“Because,” Espio whispered hotly, trying not to draw attention to them, “I am a chameleon; our emotional state can often dictate our skin colour. I learned to control it when I became a detective because it can affect my invisibility.” He sighed, “Besides, it makes for an abysmal tell.”
“Whoa.” Silver’s eyes brightly shown. Espio immediately tried to compose himself, slowing his breathing so his skin cells wouldn't change pigments again. Chaos. He thought; He is adorable.
“You must have had some awesome stories about the cases you worked on.” The hedgehog stared with admiration. “Oh-Oh didn’t you bust that smuggling ring led by Clutch in Central City that one time? That must have been - oh look our apple pie is here!” He grinned excitedly as a waitress bought the still warm slices over to their table.
Espio chuckled warmly: the time traveller’s endless enthusiasm was admirable. The way he took joy in even the smallest things in life, perhaps resulting from his many time travelling adventures, made him feel spiritually rested. Silver was truly one of a kind, and it definitely wasn’t just because of that time traveling business.
“Well, since you asked,” He continued, smiling even harder as he watched the time traveller scarfing down his pie slice, “It happened like this: Charmy…”
“Charmy, what do you see?” Vector talked into his walkie-talkie. He and Blaze had made their way to the rooftop of the building across the tea shop where they had a clear view. Or at least, Blaze flew them both up there whilst Charmy remained hidden in a trash can outside the shop.
“Was it really necessary to spy from up here?” Blaze asked, beginning to regret being up this high and lying down at an edge.
“Yeah, I figured you're not super comfortable up here, but it makes for a good vantage spot!” Vector responded, “Besides; we can’t exactly get too close without getting recognised by them, so the whole hiding-in-a-bin trick works wonders.”
“I can vouch for that!” Charmy’s voice crackled through the walkie-talkie, “It smells like a butt in here but… hold on, Espio just blushed.”
“How so?” Vector asked, intrigued.
“As in, he turned fully pink, genius.”
“Oh damn,” Vector gasped, “Silver must have said something major to make Espio lose his composure like that,” He exchanged a hopeful look with Blaze before they looked through their binoculars to watch the scene unfolding; Silver was scoffing down what looked to be a slice of pie, staring intently at Espio as he was talking. Clearly it was something interesting enough to grab Silver’s attention.
Look at how they are gazing into each other’s eyes, when was the last time you looked at someone like that? Blaze’s thoughts rang intrusively. She suddenly wished she could focus more on how high up she was; at least that fear was more manageable.
As much as she was beginning to hate herself, she couldn’t help but envy Espio and Silver; the way one of their faces would glow when their partner walked in a room, the way Silver felt comfortable around Espio enough to talk for hours and hours on end about gardening or time travel, or the way Espio’s shamisen playing and poetry could cheer Silver up even on his darkest days, entrancing the hedgehog with its mysticism. It was a love that transcended mere descripting; It could only be felt, in all its warm glory. Blaze wanted to feel that warmth; that glowing feeling her fire failed to compensate for.
“Hey Blaze, are you doing alright?” Vector asked calmly, having noticed how Blaze had zoned out.
”Huh - what?” Blaze stammered, “I’m fine, really! I'm just, really trying to focus on making sure things are going well for Silver.” She sighed.
“Come on mate,” Vector responded, in a more softer, approachable tone unlike his booming style, “You’re not fine; I know you personally enough to know that when you say ‘I’m fine’ like that, it's the complete opposite,” He continued, troubled by Blaze’s downcast mood, “So what’s the matter? I know it’s about Silver, but I doubt that it’s just his date going wrong.” He concluded.
“Heh, maybe she likes Silver and is jealous of Espio!” Charmy joked through the walkie- talkie.
“Charmy…” Vector sighed disapprovingly. “That wasn’t very appropia-”
“IT'S NOT LIKE THAT!” Blaze snapped; “I care for him so deeply, but not in that way. I can never imagine loving someone the way those two love each other, you ruffian!”
Vector was shocked; he continued to look at Blaze with deep concern that spoke volumes though the silence.
“I-I apologise,” Blaze, clearly ashamed from her outburst. “That was uncouth of me.”
“Hey don’t sweat it,” Vector reassured, “I’d react too if a certain somebody didn’t just make such an unnecessary crack right now.” He spoke as he glowered at his walkie-talkie.
“Ok, Ok, I’m sorry for making such an ‘unnecessary crack’ right now.” Charmy briskly responded. Even though he was still encased within the trash can outside the tea shop, he could feel Vector’s disapproving glare through his walkie-talkie. “I didn't know that was such a sore spot for you - wait a minute,” He paused suddenly. “Silver and Espio are on the move.”
Blaze and Vector’s eyes widened as they quickly looked through their binoculars at the street beneath them. Sure enough, Espio and Silver were leaving the shop, laughing merrily and… holding hands?
Vector gasped with delight, “Awww they are just too adorable, if only Amy was here right now.” Blaze nodded with agreement. Despite her outburst she couldn’t help but cherish how the couple confidently and gleefully strolled down the street. She almost wished she could join Silver.
“What’s going on?” Charmy’s voice crackled through again, “I had to duck down so they don’t spot me, and what do mean by adorab-OW”
“Charmy, you alright?” Vector panicky asked.
“Silver just threw a friggin can into the bin and it hit me… Aw this is the last time I hide in a smelly old bin for a stakeout.” Charmy complained.
“Yeah maybe I should’ve figured that out when I snuck you in a public trashcan of all places” Vector bashfully replied, “Alright we need to move to we can catch up to them at the library: Blaze, take me down there now; Charmy… you stay put so we can fish you out.”
“Yaaay.” Charmy’s voice dripped with sarcasm as Vector and Blaze stood up. Blaze was still a bit shaken from her flareup of emotions right then, and Vector still noticed.
“Hey, are you still good to keep tailing them with us?” He asked, genuinely concerned.
Blaze put on a confident smile, ”Yeah, I’m good.” she responded.
“Good kid.” Vector grinned warmly, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder, the two staring contently at each other until Blaze noticed something, “Erm, Vector?”
“What’s up?” The crocodile beamed.
“Your hand’s on fire.”
Vector looked at where his hand was on Blaze’s shoulder, and sure enough, the gloved hand was smoking. “Oh yeah. It is.” He replied nonchalantly.
The penny dropped. Vector yelped as he retracted his hand, blowing on his smoldering hand frantically before placing it in his mouth. After a few awkward seconds he pulled his singed glove out. Blaze was just as shocked as he was; it was rare for her body temperature to heat up like that unless she was fighting someone. “Oh Chaos are you alright? I-I’m so sorry!” She stammered.
“No, No, It’s * cough* chill . You had no idea,” Vector spluttered. “I’ll be fine, now come on!” He yelled as he quickly shook it off.
Blaze grabbed him and prepared to fly him down, only to realise that she hadn’t noticed how she was still really high up. If she could have been that distracted from her acrophobia by how clearly upset she had just gotten, then things weren’t fine; Sooner or later, she would have to really confront why that was.
Chapter 3: That's me.

Chapter Text
To say this date was going very well would have been an understatement: Silver was clearly excited, talking non-stop about which fertilisers would be best for growing snapdragons, the best companion plants for their tomato patches, and ways they could cultivate apple trees and how they could make room for them in Victory Garden. All the while the hedgehog’s free hand swivelled and clenched repeatedly, clearly displaying his joy. Espio grinned: Silver’s joy was truly irresistible.
There were a few moments though where Espio swore they were being tailed; as the couple were leaving the tea shop Silver noticed an empty can on the pavement and threw it in a nearby trash can, and for a second Espio thought he held a yelp in the bin. It was probably nothing; The chameleon’s hearing was not naturally perfect and besides, he still had lingering doubts about how the rest of the date would pan out.
Right now the two were in the Seaside City’s Public Library, an updated modern archive built within an aged yet steadfast building that had stood the test of time and countless invasions. Clearly it was the perfect location for such extensive and important works.
Espio was reading through some poetry books, enthralled by the expressive nature of some of the older works that had been preserved by the library in lieu of the Eggman war that bore so much devastation. Eggman’s ignorance of such culture in favour of total domination maddingly boiled Espio’s blood. Before he could start one of his infamous ‘brooding’ sessions, Silver swaggered over, holding a small collection of books and old magazines.
“Hey Espio, I found some really cool gardening magazines that I think could have some cool tips for the garden,” Silver beamed as he fished for one of the magazines in his hand, plopping the rest down on a nearby table, “Look! This one has an article on proper filtration and irrigation for vegetables. Isn’t that exciting!” Silver tapped his foot in quiet excitement, before noticing Espio’s reading content. “Woah! What is that stuff!”
“Hm? Oh this is some collected poetry works by some of the most established poets way back when,” Espio perked up, showing Silver his own small collection, “There’s some Witman, Dickinson, Frost; it’s quite fascinating how they delve into society, death and nature, modernism and romance.” Espio listed, smiling warmly when mentioning the last topic. “I particularly like this piece.” The ninja neatly placed his books down, save for a green book titled: Leaves of Grass. Espio turned several pages before stopping and (quietly, they were in a library after all) reading the following;
Love, that is day and night – love, that is sun and moon and stars, Love, that is crimson, sumptuous, sick with perfume, no other words but words of love, no other thought but love.
Espio looked up at Silver, who’s eyes dazzled with amazement, “Forget the gardening,” He contently pined, “I’d rather listen to you read all day long.”
Espio couldn’t help but smile warmly “And miss out on your gardening lectures? I’d rather go blind than see you go without your happiness.”
Silver blushed intensely, letting out a small, excited yelp as he gingerly held Espio’s hand, “Then maybe we can read together, and fall in love with those words in those books as we… fell in love?.” He bashfully smiled.
Now it was Espio’s turn to blush. How in Gaia’s name did I ever meet someone as innocently enthralling as him. He thought as the two silently sat down, promptly engaged with books that described the proper way to water pumpkins and Dickinson’s love for the spiritual.
The Library’s entrance swung open as Vector led his team in, his eye scanning the vast space. Charmy slunk behind, clearly not looking forward to something as dull as a library. Blaze merely followed, deep in thought. “We should probably split up.” Vector reasoned, “We could cover more ground that way without getting spotted.”
“Why though?” Charmy idly asked, “Those two seem to be doing pretty well without us poking our noses in their business.”
“I can’t just sit by and let their date sizzle out!” Vector retorted, “Not without giving those two a little extra push to seal the deal.”
“We’re detectives, not matchmakers!” Groaned Charmy, “Let’s be real, you’re completely clueless when it comes to this love stuff. You can’t even ask Vanilla out.”
“Vanilla?!” Vector exasperated, “I can totally ask her out anytime I want! She’s probably too busy doing… whatever she does all day.” He quickly spoke, trying to change the topic, “I mean, what does she do all day long? That's the bigger mystery!”
“Well, you can ask her yourself.” A certain warm voice spoke as a certain woman approached the group. There was no denying who she was; Vanilla the Rabbit, with a comforting smile and a serene presence, was right next to them. Vector was clearly stunned for obvious reasons; “V-Vanilla! Well er… what brings you here?” He stammered as he leaned on a nearby library ladder, trying his best to look impressive.
Vanilla was not really impressed. “Please do not lean on the ladders.” She politely yet sharply asked, continuing as Vector sheepishly stood up straight. “The reason why I am here is simple; I run this library, as I have been for the past 15 years.”
“You run the Library?” Vector gasped, trying his best to use his inside voice. “You’ve done a lovely job, this place looks pretty swell.”
“Why thank you” Vanilla beamed, “I can’t believe I’ve never mentioned my job before, I feel rather silly now.”
“Well I-I don’t think you're silly I think youareprettynice.” Vector blurted out, immediately realising what he had just said as Charmy tried his hardest not to snicker.
“Why aren’t you a charmer!” Vanilla laughed softly as Vector continued to blush, “But I don’t think you're here just to flirt, especially with these two with you,” She gestured to Blazer and Charmy, “What brings you three here?” She enquired.
“Just making sure that Espio and Silver’s date is running smoothly,” Blaze responded briskly, clearly distracted, “You know how they like their gardening and poetry so you know,” She chucked, trying to hide her discomfort, “They would be around here so do you know where they could be, please?”
Vanilla frowned. “Are you alright dear? You seem… upset.”
“I’M FINE!” Blaze nearly yelled, “Why does everybody keep thinking that something is the matter with me!”
“Because you’re literally steaming.” Charmy bluntly cut in.
Blaze was about to rip Charmy a new one, until she noticed herself in a nearby mirror. Sure enough, she was a brighter red than usual, with steam billowing off her head and shoulders, almost like she was an angry cartoon character. “Okay maybe I am a little upset.” She admitted quietly.
“How about we talk in my office where it's quieter,” Vanilla asked, genuinely concerned, “It’s better to keep whatever is affecting you bottled up.”
Blaze said nothing, and just nodded, clearly unwilling to argue. “As for you two,” Vanilla turned to the detectives, “It would be best to let Espio and Silver figure this one out on their own without you looking over their shoulders, so please wait outside my office so we don’t disturb them, wherever they are.” She smiled calmly, yet firmly. Vector and Charmy decided it would be best to follow her, with Charmy hitting Vector with his smuggest look, much to the crocodile’s chagrin.
“Okay, I’m guessing that this is more than just saving Silver and Espio’s date?” Vanilla gently enquired, having led Blaze into her office in the back of the library.
“I guess so.” Blaze hesitantly replied. As much as she wanted to run out of that room, she knew that sooner or later, this problem would rear its ugly head. Better to get it out the way.
Vanilla continued; “Was it something to do with what Charmy said? Vector did mention it while we were making our way over here.”
“Yes and it’s so frustrating!” Blaze sharply said, “I am so happy for him and I would never want to steal him from Espio, those two have a brilliant relationship; but…” She sighed, choosing her words carefully, “I think I liked him at one point, but at the same time I didn’t? I don’t know if you’ll understand.”
“I am willing to try, keep going if you’re comfortable.” Vanilla responded, an accepting look on her face.
Blaze took a breath, “Have you ever had a crush before?” She asked earnestly, to which Vanilla merely nodded; “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have several.” The librarian smiled.
Blaze continued, “You know how you fantasise about marrying them and having a very personal life with them? Well, I just could never see myself and Silver that way. I hold him dear to my heart, but every time I imagine that kind of relationship with him, of holding him close and sharing that depth of affection, I feel so shallow; like something is not right.” She pinched the bridge of her nose in, more steam began to emerge from her body, “As I spent more time with him I hoped something would change, but nothing did. I felt like I was falling behind my friends somehow; My friend Marine would boast about how she found her crushes all ‘hot’ and ‘sexy’, and I could never see the appeal. Like what makes them so conventionally attractive?” Blaze hitched a breath, a fiery tear forming in her eye, “I love Silver yet I could never see any of his amazing attributes enough to justify a romance: Is something wrong with me for not loving him hard enough to strengthen our bond?”
Vanilla was already worried at the cat’s distress, “Not all relationships need to be romantic: platonic relationships are just as fulfilling. Maybe you just need to accept your feelings as valid and love yourself for who you are.”
“You don’t get it!” Blaze vented, “That sense of ‘self-love’, doesn’t even come close to filling this void in me. Just because I wish there was someone in my life that makes me special, doesn’t make me special. I don’t care if loving yourself is important; Who cares about that? It doesn't come close to replacing the feeling of being loved by someone that much, like the way you feel being hugged after a hard day, like the joy of hearing them play their favourite song as they dance with you, that WAY!” Blaze paused, barely holding together, “...the way that makes you feel… whole.”
“Maybe you just need to find someone who shares your feelings?” Vanilla replied. It was an innocent suggestion, yet the rabbit had no idea that those words were just too much.
“You think I haven’t TRIED ?!?” Blaze flared with anguish, “I have courted many, many individuals in my dimension, and I tried everything. But everytime they get that close to me, every time they become intimate with me… it-it doesn't matter how much I genuinely care for them, I just feel nothing , and it tears me apart because I just cannot care enough to make it work, and they end up leaving me! It’s my fault damn it! I AM INCAPABLE OF LOVE AND IT’S ALL MY FAULT I AM ALONE!!!”
Vanilla was speechless.
“I-I just don’t get it… I just d-don’t want to be alone…” Blaze wept bitterly, her tears burning the carpet slightly as her tail shook violently.
Vanilla didn't say anything else; she just quietly stood up and tightly embraced Blaze as she bawled. Vanilla was pleasantly surprised to notice that she wasn’t being burned; rather, the sensation was like hugging a hot water bottle. She would feel immensely comfortable, if she wasn’t consoling a fire princess who guarded a power that allowed her to burn brighter than a supernova.
After what seemed like an eternity, Vanilla noticed that Blaze had calmed down, and passed her a tissue; “This may seem like a stupid question, but why haven't you spoken up about this sooner?”
Blaze sniffled, “I guess I just have never been able to put into words how I felt until now.” She wiped her tears as Vanilla watched, “Besides, it’s stupid really; me not understanding something as natural and basic as love.”
“Dear, your feelings are not stupid; far from it” Vanilla countered, “Love isn’t just something you can just easily understand or define, It’s just something that exists. And we all struggle to figure out what it means for us. I’m sure Silver and Espio haven’t figured it all out yet. I don't even recognise it sometimes. And that is perfectly fine.”
Vanilla continued speaking as she walked over to a nearby cabinet, where she picked up a purple, brightly illustrated book, “I am always willing to respect and better understand people’s feelings and how they identify. As long as they are happy, I will always support them, and that includes you. Now, this book was recommended to me by an intern who worked here. They had a similar situation to what you are going through and this helped them a lot; I am sure it will help you too.” Vanilla concluded, placing a soothing hand on Blaze’s shoulder.
Blaze flickered as she stared at the book Vanilla had handed to her. She slowly began to read, her eyes becoming less puffy and more focused as she hoped to really describe how she felt. The more and more she read, she became more and more determined. Suddenly, a strong sense of realisation and relief washed over her as things finally clicked into place. It was a rush; a rush she could only describe with a few words.
“Holy shit. That’s me.”
"Language." Vanilla said bluntly, yet happily.
Notes:
So fun fact: I have been reading a lot of random Tumblr posts, their comments and replies and they are practically a gold mine of inspiration for writing and stuff. As one user (mythpoeticliecense I think?) put it; "Tumblr is the real word equivalent of infinite monkeys using typewriters eventually producing Shakespeare". I think that is just swell! I'll try to give credit where possible.
Anyways, we're halfway through, wonder what will happen next?

“What do you think is going on in there?” Charmy asked. He and Vector had been waiting outside Vanilla’s office for sometime. Charmy was entertaining himself by playing games on Vector’s phone.
“I don’t know, and I don’t think it's any of our business.” Vector sighed, leaning back with his arms behind his head. “Besides, Vanilla knows what she’s doing. She is brilliant with this kind of thing.”
“Yeah.” Chamy responded. He then turned to Vector, “Seriously though, when are you gonna ask her out?”
Vector nearly fell off his chair, “I thought you were the one who wanted to stop playing matchmaker, give it a rest already!”
“I’m just saying…” Charmy grinned cheekily, “It sounds like the perfect time to do so, since we're talking about love and stuff…”
The door of Vanilla’s office flung open, and Blaze emerged, flicking through her book intensely. Her eyes were still slightly red from earlier.
“Gee kid, you doing alright?” Vector enquired, now worried.
Blaze looked up, “I am doing much better now. I guess I just needed to… vent, as you put it.” She sighed, pointing to the book she held, “Vanilla thought this would help.”
“Hehe, amongus.” Charmy giggled. He stopped when Blaze looked at him, utterly confused. “You’ve never heard of Among Us? Gee we really need to get you to play it after this whole date.” He groaned, pointing to the phone in his hand.
Something Charmy said set alarm bells off in Vector’s head, “Date? Oh crap, look at the time!” He panicked, “Those two lovebirds will be at the park by now, we need to hurry!”
Vanilla emerged from her office just as the three began running off, with Vector throwing her a brief ‘thank you’ wave as they left. Vanilla smiled contentedly. There was a reason she had such faith in them all. Especially Vector.
The sun was beginning to set over Seaside City. It was now evening, the bright sun now turning a warm orange. It was comforting, watching the rays of light flicker on the reflective surface of the small lake that was in the park Espio and Silver had chosen for the last part of their date.
Silver had chosen a fish themed ice cream, lapping it up happily whilst Espio savoured his apple ice cream. The two had gotten comfortable on a bench, happy to just gaze at the water with just the occasional rustle of leaves and the honking of birds settling nearby.
“Man, Blaze really knows her ice cream!” Silver grinned, already beginning to eat the cone, “If only we could go back for seconds then I would die happy!”
Espio hummed contently, “A perfect end to a perfect day. This ice cream has been delectable.
“Ha! I love it when you use those fancy words.” Silver sighed, clasping Espio’s hand on the bench, his white fur stained by the ice cream he had just devoured.
Espio noticed this, “You have something on your left cheek.” He said helpfully.
Silver wiped his right cheek, only to find and feel nothing on his free hand. The hedgehog tried again, only to wipe the same spot he had just cleaned. Now confused, Silver resorted to holding both hands flat in front of him, thumbs sticking out to form L shapes. “Wait, did you mean your left or my left?” he asked innocently.
“Nevermind I’ll get it,” Espio politely said, using a tissue to wipe away the stains before holding Silver’s cheek to inspect it, “Looks clean to me.”
Espio turned to face Silver, only to realise he was now blushing a bright red. Espio then realised to his surprise that he was practically cradling Silver’s head in his hand, feeling the warmth of his fur as the hedgehog gazed longingly.
“Wow.” Breathed Silver, “Just, wow. You are so amazing I can’t even...”
“Ahh Tenshi. ” Espio sighed smoothly.
There was nothing stopping them; almost hesitantly, the two leaned closer and closer, all tension melting away as they realised just how comfortable they felt in each other's grasp. How it just felt right. The world around them vanished as the two’s lips got painfully close to kissing….
And then Espio’s horn poked Silver in the face, barely missing his eye and making him yelp in surprise.
“Oh Gaia, Silver! Are you alright?” Espio asked, distraught.
“Yeah I’m good!” Silver grinned sheepishly, rubbing his forehead, “We really should have thought this kissing biz through huh?” He chuckled.
“Hmmm, You’re right,” Espio pondered, “Maybe if you tilted your head sideways a bit we could avoid this pesky obtrusion all togeth-hmmmff?!”
Silver kissed him, his head tilted to the right.
Espio’s initial shock quickly gave into relaxed acceptance as he leaned into the kiss, eyes closed as he cupped Silver’s cheek again. It was passionate. It was inexperienced. It was love. And to those two that sat on that small bench in that quiet park in the middle of the city, it was perfect.
“I love you with all that I am, and then some.” Silver murmured as their lips parted.
“I love you too, Tenshi. ” Espio responded.
Silver couldn’t help but laugh, mostly from the intensity of what just happened, “What does ‘Tenshi’ even mean?”
Espio smiled as he gazed into Silver’s eyes, “It’s the Japanese word for ‘ angel ’, a heavenly messenger.” He explained as he cradled Silver’s head again, holding his hand passionately as he did so.
Silver couldn’t help but blush again, only more intensely. OMG! He literally called me his angel!!! He thought, his racing mind now suddenly calm like the glowing lake stretching beyond them; I am the luckiest frigging guy ever.
Espio’s mind was also calm. It was a pleasant calmness, not unlike the stoic calmness he put on to clear his mind when on missions, but as if everything was well. Like nothing was wrong in the world. I want to be with this hedgehog forever. He is hope and joy personified and I just want to be with him forever.
In some nearby bushes, the remaining members of Team Chaotix were watching in hiding. They had seen everything.
“Heck yeah! They’ve only gone and freaking done it!” Charmy cheered, trying to keep his voice down, “Guess they didn’t need our help after all, eh Vector… Vector?”
Charmy turned, only to see the lead detective trying, and failing, to cover his tears. “T-T-They really did it,” He blubbered, “They grow up so fa-a-a-ast!” He wailed as quietly as he could.
Blaze couldn’t help but shed a tear as well, “I am so happy for them. They are perfect for each other.” The book that Vanilla had lent her was nearby, open as Blaze occasionally gazed between it and the scene unfolding before them.
“Wow, you are really into that book.” Vector noticed.
“Yes, this book is such an enthralling read!” Blaze exclaimed, “It has made me realise so much. It's certainly making me feel so much more confident and comfortable now that things are being explained to me. It honestly feels better to know that my feelings are legitimate and not such an… romantic anomaly.”
“Well there you go! It's great to hear that you’re accepting who you are!” Vector smiled with realisation, taking a look at the book’s cover, “No matter what happens, The Chaotix will be there to support you. I know Silver will too!”
“Yeah…” Blaze trailed off, now suddenly deep in thought. WIll Silver actually support you? Sure he’s nice but between you and Espio who do you think he cares for the most?
“Hey, guys, I hate to interrupt - actually no wait I love interrupting - but…” Charmy cut in hastily, “Silver and Espio are leaving now.”
Vector and Blaze turned to look out at the bushes and, sure enough, Espio and Silver were leaving the park. The couple had never looked closer; Espio’s arm was wrapped around Silver’s waist, and the hedgehog’s head was placed lovingly on his shoulder as they walked.
Vector began to well up again, “Oh they are so adorable I can’t even…” He trailed off as he whipped his phone out and took a photo of the couple.
“Blegh.” Charmy stuck their tongue out, ”You’re a big softie you know that”.
“Oh when you’ll have a partner of your own you’ll understand.” Vector sighed longingly.
“Yeah like you and Vanilla could have!” Charmy cheekily retorted, much to Vector’s chagrin.
“Errr you do realise they are leaving right?” Blaze spoke up.
“Yeah no we should definitely get going.” Vector quickly concluded, desperate to change the subject. “Blaze, you still up for a fiery flight?
Blaze’s hands burned with confidence, “Always.”
As they rapidly flew through the city, Vector noticed something; Outside the City Library was Vanilla, who was leaving the library as its lights began to dim, a satchel slung underarm as she was checking her phone. Vector made a split decision. “Hold on guys, I need to do something.”
Blaze looked confused, but upon seeing Vanilla, she immediately understood. She immediately placed him down, just around the corner of the library. Vector dusted himself off, and gave a quick wink, “Pray for me,” He grinned, “I am about to do something stupid.”
He then jogged around the corner, and towards Vanilla, who immediately noticed him upon looking up. “Why Vector, what a lovely surprise!” She pleasantly smiled, “How are Espio and Silver doing?”
“They, * pant * are doing * wheeze * so great!” Vector responded, pretending to be out of breath as he stopped, “I was running to get back home before they got there when I noticed you were leaving the library just now.”
“Indeed, my shift is over and I must be going soon, Cream and Gemerl are probably waiting for me, and you know how Gemerl’s cooking is err…” Vanilla paused politely, “still improving.”
“Your cooking is certainly super compared to him!” Vector grinned toothly. “I guess that's what happens when you let someone without a stomach or a sense of taste try their hand at cooking, hehe!” Vector rubbed the back of his head, “On the topic of food.” He paused, taking a breath. “As you may know, The Chaotix have busted some pretty big cases lately, meaning we finally have some money to put to good use.”
“That’s great news! Maybe you can finally pay back some of the taxes you owe.” Vanilla innocently smiled.
Vector spluttered. “That’s not what I meant!” He looked closely at Vanilla, trying to see if she was joking, or was being serious. She was unreadable. Oh no she’s hot. He thought. If I actually start dating her, I am 50/50 on paying back those taxes I’d ‘forgotten’.
“What I meant was…” Vector took another breath, there was no backing down now.
“Vanilla, wouldyouliketogooutwithmetodinnersometime?” He sputtered out as quickly as he could, all in a single breath.
Vanilla blinked, almost as if she was processing what Vector had just said. Again, she was completely unreadable. “That sounds nice.” She finally responded.
Vector stammered; “I know this is not a particularly romantic way to ask you out and maybe I could have planned this better but I thought it would be better to shoot my shot now than not at all but-”
Vector was cut off as Vanilla planted a kiss on the side of his long mouth. Vector froze up. “It’s a date, you lovable man.” She smiled as Vector looked back at her, still processing what just happened, “I know a nice bistro not too far from here that’s just perfect. You’ll let me know when you're available?”
“Y-yeah, I can’t wait.” Vector uttered, lovestruck.
“Neither can I.” Vanilla soothed warmly, “I’ll be seeing you soon. Give my regards to your boys. And tell Blaze that I wish for her the best.” She said graciously. And just like that, she left for home, leaving a stunned Vector in utter awe.
“Heh, guess you did have it in you, ya big dummy!” Charmy grinned as he and Blaze walked up to him.
“Indeed” Blaze added heartily, “Congratulations Vector, I am proud of your valiant effort.”
“Y-yeah” Vector repeated, before slightly beaming with confidence. “That was pretty cool what just happened.”
The trio stayed there for a few minutes, taking in the surrounding sights and sounds of the city as evening began to roll in. Despite everything that had happened today, things still felt normal, despite all that had happened. It was almost relaxing, in a way.

Chapter Text
After a brisk flight through the city, Blaze finally reached the Chaotix’s house. After blasting at almost mach speeds (emphasis on almost ), it was a relief to finally slow down and just gently descend to the ground.
Especially since she was carrying a very light-headed crocodile.
Vector briefly staggered before shaking his head, “Phew! I like ya Blaze, but if I take another flight like that, It’ll be too soon.”
“I apologise,” Blaze sighed as Charmy landed next to them, “I just wanted to ensure that we made it back before Espiver did.”
Vector blinked, “Before who?”
Blaze flared with embarrassment as Charmy broke out laughing, “HA! Guess their ship name really is catching on!” Charmy then turned to Vector, “I wonder what you and Vanilla’s ship name would be?”
“ANYWAYS,” Vector blurted out, steamrolling through Charmy’s train of thought, “Thanks for helping us out Blaze, you’ve honestly been a massive help.”
“I’m glad to be of service,” Blaze said smoothly as she slightly bowed, “I guess I should also be thanking you for supporting me. It’s been a long day and I have had a lot to consider. This book Vanilla gave me has really helped me come to terms with my identity. I might even have found a name for what I am, specifically.”
“Great to hear!” Vector cheered.
“Yeah,” Added Charmy, “Soooo….. What are you going to tell Silver?”
“CHARMY!” Vector exclaimed, “You know for a fact that’s not nice!”
Blaze sighed. Even though Charmy’s lack of self awareness was detrimental at times, he had raised a good point, “That’s the thing, I don’t know how I’m going to broach the subject with him.” She pondered, “I only started learning about my sexuality a few hours ago so figuring out how to tell him is the least of my problems. And besides, I still doubt he will take the news well, all things considered.”
Vector thought for a second, before smiling warmly, “Silver is one of the nicest guys I know: he is so considerate and trusting and always willing to give people a chance or three; at worst he’ll understand completely and forgive you. If he was to reject you for having some innocent feelings I’d be willing to wager he’d been replaced by that octopus shapeshifter or something.”
Blaze relaxed, she knew that Vector had made a good point, “Silver’s a keeper; regardless of whether you are his friend or his lover. Why else do I think helped you tail him today? I wasn’t just looking out for Espio you know!” Vector reassured.
“Speaking of looking out for them...” Charmy smirked as a certain hedgehog and chameleon approached the path leading to the house, still lovingly in each other's arms.
“Silver! Espio!” Called Blaze excitedly, trying her best to not sound nervous, “I trust that the date went well?”
Silver could barely contain his excitement, “It was amazing! We had tea and pie, we read lots of books on gardening and some awesome poetry, we went to the park which had some amazing weather, by the way, and-and….” He then turned to his boyfriend, “What did you think of today babe?!”
“Exquisite.” Espio summarised perfectly, “Any day is exquisite with you.”
Silver let out an excited yelp and enwrapped Espio in a tight hug, “But enough about me, what did you guys get up to today? I bet you got up to some amazeballs stuff!”
“Uhhh Silver, there is something I wanted to discuss with you… alone.” Blaze spoke up, rubbing her arm apprehensively.
Silver looked at his best friend, his joyful expression slightly faltering. “Sure!” He smiled, before turning to Espio, “Should I say goodbye now or…”
“I can wait a little longer, tenshi, ” Espio responded smoothly. “I trust that Blaze just has something to get off her chest.” He smiled as he turned to the fire princess, giving her a slight nod.
“Yeah come on Espio!” Charmy teasingly interrupted, “Besides, you’ll never guess who Vector asked out?”
“CHARMY I SWEAR TO CHAOS!” Vector yelled as a thoroughly amused Espio walked into the house behind Charmy, who threw Blaze a thumbs up and a wink as he began talking to the chameleon, with Vector doggedly trying to steer the conversation away from him awkwardly asking Vanilla out as the door shut behind them, leaving only Silver and Blaze on the porch.
The evening was surprisingly quiet for a city. Apart from the faint hum of cars passing by or people chatting nearby, the only noises to be heard was the rustling of trees as the sea breeze passed through them. It was surprisingly peaceful. At least things had calmed down enough for Blaze so she could talk to Silver about what had been bothering her.
“Sooo… what’s up?” Silver asked calmly, noticing Blaze’s tension.
“I… well, t-the thing is…” Blaze was beginning to struggle here. Was it really worth being honest if it could ruin their relationship? But as she looked into his eyes - his naive, empathetic, golden eyes - she realised it would be worth it. Besides, she had come this far, she might as well go all in. “I believed I was in love with you at some point. Before you met Espio.”
Silver looked surprised; “You were?” His eyes darted around briefly before refocusing on Blaze, “I mean, it’s perfectly fine; I’m not mad or anything. It’s just that…” He gulped before continuing; “I always thought you just really liked me as a friend which is why I never acted on anything?” He spoke quickly.
“Silver I don’t blame you,” Blaze responded, hoping to get to the point. “It's just that this is more than just an unrequited crush. There’s a reason that I said ‘I believed I was in love with you’.”
Silver gave a sigh that sounded like relief mixed with confusion. “What do you mean?”
“It’s just that I felt like I wasn’t anything, really;” Blaze explained, “As if I couldn’t be in love because I never felt the things that I was told people normally felt when they were in love. Like physical attraction: I could see why, say, Marine could be attracted to someone’s physique but that was never ‘interesting’ to me; I was always more attracted to someone’s personality and even then, I could never see myself being that close to anyone.”
Sliver was beginning to catch on somehow, which was at least comforting. “It was almost like I was incapable of love and the fact I could never find a way to act on my feelings to you, or anyone really, only validated that.” Blaze continued sadly, as Silver’s expression changed from understanding to concern.
“But I’ve done some research and I think I know why I feel the way I do,” Blaze took a breath and then spoke hesitantly; “I think I am… asexual and aromantic?”
“Ohhh yeah, I’ve heard of those terms,” Silver nodded understandingly. “I think Vanilla had a book on that; has that what you've been reading?”
“Yeah,” Blaze said. “You must think this is all weird.” She sadly resigned.
“What? Of course I don’t think that weird, if anything I’m the weird one” Silver grinned as he glowed brightly, showing a hint of his power to make his point.
Blaze looked unconvinced, so Silver tried to reassure her, “Blaze I’ve bounced between this time and the future countless times and these last few years I’ve spent with you here have been the highlight; Your strength, compassion, and your determination have always inspired me to strive to be better; to build up my resolve and preserve. Do you honestly think I’d throw all that away just because of your preferences?”
“But I was in love with you even though you only saw us as friends! Doesn’t that bother you? Especially since you’re in a relationship now?” Blaze despairingly retorted.
“I think being at least a little bit in love with your friends is normal. In fact, it’s essential. Love isn't something that is separated into binary terms of ‘romance’ or ‘friendship’; it is such a nebulously wonderful thing.” Silver discussed, “Blaze, I fricking love you in the wildest, most platonic way possible. That may seem like a bit of a… contradiction? But if that level of love brings us joy, then that’s all that matters.”
Blaze was speechless. Despite all her doubts and anxieties, Silver was just as patient and accepting as he had always been. It finally felt like a massive weight had been lifted, leaving her feeling so empowered and relieved. This moved her so much that she began to cry, leading Silver to embrace her tightly.
“Gods, I platonically love you too Silver. I’m just so grateful that you understand and care about me that much,” She purred, much to their surprise, “I just don’t want to get in the way of you and Espio.”
“You never will, there’s room in my heart for both of you.” Silver reassured as they separated. “You’re the best friend I’ve ever had. Espio meanwhile… I’ve always had a bit of a crush on him.” He bashfully smiled.
“It just feels so good to finally have the words to describe what I am,” Blaze smiled warmly as she wiped her tears, sighing with content, “I am asexual and aromantic.”
“I’m proud of you buddy.” Silver smiled warmly.
The two stood there, with the only noticeable sound being the cool summer breeze. Blaze smiled, “That was rather astonishing what you just said, about love that is, have you ever considered authoring your own poetry?”
“Don’t worry, I’m saving the best for Espio! I think I can write a hell of a haiku!” He grinned.
“Do you know what a Haiku is?” Blaze asked innocently.
“Nope, but I still like what I’ve come up with!” Silver laughed, and Blaze couldn’t help but laugh too.
The door to the house opened, and Espio walked out. Upon seeing the two, he peacefully smiled. He knew his boyfriend’s compassion would win in the end.
“Everything alright?” He asked.
“Never been better,” Blaze responded comfortably as Silver and Espio clasped their hands in relief. They looked so happy in each other's presence, “You two really are perfect for each other.”
Espio nodded warmly. “I could say the same for you,” He responded as he looked at the two with deep contentment. He was happy that Silver and Blaze's friendship, maybe even kinship, was still as strong as ever, “You’re inseparable.”
Notes:
And that's a wrap folks!
This could be considered a sequel to my Previous Fic, Turn the Lights off.
This might be a bit of a unique interpretation of Silver and Blaze's relationship and stuff but I figured it was worth trying out as it was a unique and interesting story that could be told. More Asexual representation is always a win too, so I figured what the hell. I just hope I did all of the characters justice and I nailed the asexual representation (I am asexual myself, but I made sure to do some research beforehand so I could get it right here). Especially since this is my first time writing romantic stuff.
Also, no surprise but this whole fic is titled after the song 'Love like you', specifically this cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SaGadvi0Qs that was famously used in Chazington's video essay of the Sonic Movies for the Stone and Eggman moments (I ship those two, I see the vision lol). I just saw a lot of Silver and Espio in that musical cover so I went for it.
As always, constructive criticism is welcome. Thanks for Reading!
