Work Header

you are the best thing (that's ever been mine)

Summary:

Caitlyn and Vi have both been in a wonderful mood lately, and it's because they are both quite eager to pop the question!

This takes place one year after the events of 'pick your poison, babe (i'm poison either way)'

--

Title inspo: Mine by Taylor Swift

Notes:

I am not fluff writer, so apologies in advance if this sucks!

PS: You need to have read 'pick your poison babe (i'm poison either way)' & the sequels to really get the significance of some of these moments, but if you've forgotten (or if you don't mind spoilers), here are some things to know/remember:

1. Vi works as a personal trainer at a gym in Piltover.
2. Vi sleeps in late, but wakes up demanding breakfast even if it's half past noon.
3. Vi thinks Caitlyn's cape is really hot and reminds her of a time they had really good sex (#TheCapeStaysOn), but Caitlyn doesn't wear it often because it reminds her of her Commander Caitlyn era. She does, though, wear it from time to time just because Vi likes it.
4. Jinx is alive and living in Zaun with Isha and Vander (also alive). Caitlyn pardoned Jinx for her crimes because she helped save Piltover from Noxus. Caitlyn sometimes tags along with Vi to visit her family in Zaun. It's still a little awkward/tense but they manage.
5. They first said 'I love you' in the Kiramman Greenhouse (during sex) and so it's become a special area of the Kiramman estate for them.
6. They have discussed marriage before/wanting to spend the rest of their lives together.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Vi!” Caitlyn says, barging into the bedroom and leaping onto the bed. She lands squarely on top of her sleeping girlfriend, who is lying on her back and spread out like a starfish. “Darling, are you awake?” she asks, actively shaking her.

Vi manages a grumble in response, before wrapping all four of her strong limbs around Caitlyn’s smaller frame. She spins them around, so that she can be on top—all the while, still refusing to open her eyes.

“Vi!” Caitlyn laughs in protest, trying to squirm out of her grip.

“No talking,” Vi says groggily. “Only sleep.”

Caitlyn laughs harder, giggles filling the entire room. It makes Vi smile, even in her incredibly sleepy state.

“No laughing,” Vi teases her. Only sleep.” And this time she shakes her head, her pink locks tickling Caitlyn’s face—which, of course, only makes her laugh even harder.

“Darling, stop!” she says, still in a fit of giggles. “It’s already half past noon and you’ve got a shift tonight. If you don’t wake up now, we’ll barely get any time together.”

This, at least, works to make Vi roll over and off of Caitlyn. She runs a hand over her face, as if trying to wipe away any remnants of sleep off of herself.

“You kept me up all night, Cupcake,” she says in between a yawn.

No,” Caitlyn argues. “You kept me up all night. You’re quite literally insatiable. But that’s all right, because I’m so nice and giving.”

This time Vi laughs—only to be met by a pillow to the face.

“Don’t laugh!” Caitlyn says, jumping onto Vi again, this time straddling her. “It’s true! I’m incredibly generous, you know? Anyone would be lucky to call me their girlfriend, and you just take me for granted,” she jokes.

“Baby, I thank the gods every night for you,” Vi says, staring up at her, her hands on Caitlyn’s thighs.

She’s wearing a sundress today, and it would be, oh, so easy to just slip her fingers all the way up to—

“You’re thinking dirty thoughts,” Caitlyn says. “I can tell.”

Vi blushes, but says, “Is that so bad?”

“You’ve been quite naughty lately,” Caitlyn says, her hands coming up to Vi’s chest. She runs her nails along the fabric of her sleep shirt, then pauses when she feels Vi’s hard nipples attempting to poke through.

Vi’s breath hitches and her hips involuntarily buck up into Caitlyn—immediately proving her point.

“Something has gotten into you, and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is,” Caitlyn says, narrowing her eyes.

And the specific phrase jump-starts Vi’s heart—because yes, there is a reason. And that reason has all to do with Caitlyn’s finger, specifically the fourth one on her left hand. The one that will slip in quite perfectly into the ring that Vi has hidden in her bedside drawer. So can you blame her that the anticipation alone has made her rather…aroused?

Caitlyn’s hands meet Vi’s at her thighs, then she brings them up to her mouth—kissing them slowly, taking her time on each of her fingers. It’s all very innocent—at least, until Caitlyn sticks her hot, slick tongue out to tease at Vi’s knuckles. Vi lets out a low whimper—she can hardly help it.

She lifts two fingers, then, aiming to part Caitlyn’s lips, to push against the familiar wet warmth of her tongue, to move them back and forth and feel the hum of Caitlyn’s moans. But then, Caitlyn is biting down on her. Not-so gently gnawing on Vi’s fingers like a rabbit with a carrot.

“Something’s gotten into you,” Vi laughs, pulling her hand away just to let Caitlyn steal it right back. “You’ve been in a very goofy mood lately.”

“Yes, I suppose I have,” Caitlyn says. And what she doesn’t say is that she has a ring of her own that’s been burning a hole in her cape pocket for some time now. (Yes, that cape).

“I like it,” Vi says, sitting up and smiling up at her. “You seem happy.”

“I am,” Caitlyn says sincerely. She’s happier than she’s ever been, than she ever thought possible. Vi leans in to kiss her, but Caitlyn playfully pushes her back, her hand palming Vi’s entire face. “Go brush your teeth,” she says. “Then meet me downstairs for breakfast.”

Breakfast? It’s half past noon!” Vi jokes.

“Oh, shut up.”

“Cupcake,” Vi whispers. “Baby, wake up.”

“Hmm?” Caitlyn whimpers, before rolling away and pulling the covers over her face.

Vi chuckles softly. “Caitlyn,” she tries again. “You’re late for work.”

“Haven’t got work today,” she replies, her speech slurred with sleepiness.

“Damn, I really thought that would work,” Vi says. “But c’mon. You can’t just sleep the day away.”

Caitlyn groans, throwing the covers off her face. “Sleep the day away? It’s…” She looks over at the clock on the wall. “Four in the morning? Violet, I’m going to kill you.”

“That’s fine,” Vi says. “But before you kill me, I have a surprise for you.”

“Can the surprise wait ‘till morning?”

“Nope,” she says with a pop on the ‘P’, then leans forward and kisses the top of Caitlyn’s head. “Come on, Cupcake. Don’t make me beg.”

“Oh, but you know I love it when you beg,” Caitlyn says, making Vi smile. Oh, she’s got her now.

“Okay, then please,” she says. “Please, wake up, baby.”

“Mmm,” Caitlyn hums happily, rolling back to face Vi. “If I must.”

“You must,” Vi says. Caitlyn leans in for a kiss, but Vi is already springing off the bed. “Go brush your teeth and meet me downstairs.”

“Oh, you’re so mean,” Caitlyn whines, and, oh, she really is adorable.

“The meanest,” Vi agrees. “Oh, and also, get dressed.”

“Are we going somewhere?” Caitlyn asks, rather incredulously, eyebrows up to her hairline.

“Stop asking so many questions,” Vi says with a wink, then slips out the door.

Caitlyn elects to wear the cape, if only just to see Vi’s wide-eyed reaction. It’s not a piece of clothing she wears often anymore, but she knows that it drives Vi just a little bit crazy.

Fuck, you look hot.”

All right, maybe more than just a little bit.

“How about you take me back to bed, then?” Caitlyn says, wrapping her arms around Vi’s neck and pulling her in for a kiss.

“Oh, so you can fall back asleep in two seconds?” Vi laughs. “Yeah, we’re not doing that. C’mon.” She takes her hand and pulls her towards the back door.

“You’re so cruel,” Caitlyn sighs, but intertwines their fingers and lets Vi lead the way.

The way, apparently, is through the Kiramman gardens. They walk through the well-lit path, past the violets and cornflowers and red roses, until finally arriving at their greenhouse.

And it truly is their greenhouse. No longer abandoned and forgotten, but kept thoroughly well-loved and frequently visited. It’s bustling now with life—lush, fragrant, and beautiful—much, it seems, like their own life now. How far they both have come, and with them, this small greenhouse. How much they’ve changed and grown and bloomed.

They take their afternoon tea in here sometimes. Or read. Or garden together.

“You fancy a late night quickie, then?” Caitlyn asks.

All right, they also fuck in here. Quite a lot.

Vi shakes her head, laughing. “And you say I’m the insatiable one.”

They walk deeper into the greenhouse, reaching a small trickling fountain whose stone is covered in moss and water-loving plants that glisten with moisture. Vi takes them around to the opposite side, where there is a small table upon which sits a single frosting-covered cupcake.

“Vi, what is this?” Caitlyn asks, cocking her head and reaching out to pick up the pastry.

“It’s a cupcake,” Vi says.

“I gathered that much, darling,” Caitlyn says. “Is there a reason that it’s waiting for us here?”

“Jinx baked it,” Vi says, and you really should give Caitlyn credit for not immediately dropping it frosting-down onto the ground. But, then again, a lot has happened in this past year. A lot has changed. “For you.”

Jinx and Caitlyn are not close. No, they likely never will be. But they do tolerate each other. They do, in their own ways, care for each other. Because if there’s one thing that they have in common, it’s the most important thing of all: that they love Vi with their entire heart. That they want Vi to be happy.

“She baked it…” Caitlyn pauses, still, a bit wary. “For me?”

Vi shrugs. “For us, I guess. I’ll eat it with you.”

And this, at least, calms Caitlyn’s nerves a bit—because surely Jinx would never poison Vi.

“Is there a reason we’re the lucky recipients of this cupcake, then?”

“Yeah, it’s a truce,” Vi says. “A real one. A, uh, blessing, I guess.” And now Vi is becoming a bit shy, a bit pink, a bit flustered.

“She’s blessing our relationship?” Caitlyn asks, her brow slightly furrowed. “I suppose that’s rather nice of her. And I do appreciate the sentiment, but…well, I’m afraid I’m still a bit confused as to why this is all unfolding so early in the morning.”

Vi steps forward, taking one of Caitlyn’s hands in her own. She breathes in, nice and slow and deep—centering herself and her thoughts and her feelings.

Everything will change after this, she thinks to herself. And I can’t fucking wait.

“Caitlyn,” she says. “This is where you said you loved me for the very first time. And, fuck, my heart stopped.” She puts her other hand against her chest for emphasis. “And when it woke back up, it felt more alive than ever. I felt more alive than ever. And every single time since then…every I love you that you give me, it’s like that very first time all over again. I never want to stop hearing it. I never want to stop saying it back.”

“I’ll say it forever,” Caitlyn says. And, then, to prove it, “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Vi smiles at her, her entire body now buzzing with firelights—from her stomach to her chest to her fingertips. Or, perhaps it’s the nerves. Probably both. “I love you because being with you feels like I don’t have to fight all the time. Like I can rest because I know I’m safe. Because I know you’ll take care of me. I love you because you see me. Every bit of me. The good and the bad and the things that even I don’t see about myself. And you love me anyway. You love me so much that it’s contagious. That you’ve tricked me into loving myself. I love you because I can’t help it. And I don’t want to help it. I was put on Runeterra to be in love with you, and I never want to be anything else.”

Violet,” Caitlyn sighs, her eyes already brimming with tears like her heart brims with love. Oh, how she echoes every single sentiment. How she wishes she could open herself up and show Vi, so that she sees firsthand how she fills every chamber of her heart. How she always has and always will.

“Cait, the sun is going to rise soon,” Vi says. “Very soon. But I have to ask you something before it does.”

“Oh?”

“The thing is, babe,” Vi continues, her hand now searching for the ring hidden in her pocket. “Is that I can’t stand to start another day without being your fiancée.”

Caitlyn’s heart drops and her eyes go wide.

No, she thinks. No, I’m supposed to do this.

“Caitlyn Kiramman, will you marr—”

“No!”

Vi freezes.

“Wait, what?” she asks, her voice suddenly so small and broken and utterly confused.

“Fuck! No, darling, I mean, yes!” Caitlyn struggles, mentally kicking herself for ruining Vi’s perfectly beautiful proposal.

“Yes?” Vi asks, tilting her head like a dog, which is rather unfortunate because she already quite looks like a kicked puppy. “Are…you sure?”

Oh, it absolutely destroys Caitlyn to see her like this.

Yes, of course I’m sure, she wants to say. I’ve never been more sure of anything. Our lives were meant to be lived together—to be shared, to be intertwined.

But, instead, what she does is remember what she’s wearing and immediately start digging through her cape pockets. Finally, she fishes out a small wooden box and lays it on her palm, presenting it to Vi.

“Is that..?” Vi asks, but then Caitlyn is pulling the lid back.

Oh, Vi thinks. It is.

She stares with wide, glistening eyes at the ring—it’s a simple silver band that holds a lapis lazuli stone, sprinkled with specks of gold. It’s beautiful in its minimalism—both delicate and strong, bold and understated. Vi glances from the ring to Caitlyn’s face and it isn’t lost on her how the color of the stone matches her gorgeous hair almost exactly. Whether this was purposeful or not is unimportant. But it is quite funny, really, because now Vi is pulling a nearly identical box out from her own pocket to reveal another ring—this one intricate in its design, with the metal band arranged in the shape of leaves and swirls. A bit chic, a bit dramatic, a bit elegant—entirely Caitlyn Kiramman. And at its center: a garnet stone, large and proud and resembling Vi’s own hair.

“We match,” she says softly. And as she does, tears begin to spill from her eyes, running down her cheeks. But there’s no ounce of heartbreak here. No, there’s only love and happiness and so, so much excitement for everything that’s yet to come for them.

“We do match,” Caitlyn agrees, tears of her own starting to spring from her eyes.

“Go ahead and ask me, then,” Vi says, sniffling. “Ask because I want to say yes. And then I want to kiss you. And then I want to fuck you while the sun comes up.” This last one, of course, makes Caitlyn laugh—that beautiful teary sort of laugh. “And then,” Vi says. “I want to marry you.”

Caitlyn nods, takes a deep breath, then says, “Violet, will you—”

It turns out, both of them are terrible at letting the other finish a proposal—because already Vi is lunging forward, crashing her mouth into Caitlyn’s and saying into the kiss, “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!”
