Summary
When Imogen awoke that morning, she hadn't expected to receive a dark courtesan at the gates of Red Moon Ranch. But when that beautiful, mysterious woman turned out to be the very same Lady who had been hounding her for weeks to sell her horses to the crown, Imogen all but told her to get lost. “I’m sorry, I think you’ve got the wrong number,” the woman cut her off.
Vi felt her face go so hot she was sure that it was visibly steaming in the winter air. Of course it was a fucking wrong number - just the cherry on top of an already shit morning. She struggled to conjure up some sort of apology. Instead, what came out was, “Oh. Well, thank god, because I was feeling really bad about yelling at someone who sounds so sexy.”
As soon as the words left her mouth she wished she had a spare hand to cram them back inside. She was considering just abruptly hanging up when a breathy chuckle filtered across the line.
“Awfully bold for someone who’s ranting about cement to a stranger at eight o’clock in the morning.”

The cold brick behind Caitlyn contrasted sharply with the heat of Vi’s body pressing into her, and she couldn’t help the breathless laugh that escaped her lips.

Vi rolled her eyes as Caitlyn followed her into the bathroom, whirling on her the second the door closed.
“What the fuck is your deal? Thought it might be fun to slum it for the night with the gutter trash who rescued you out there? You’re welcome, by the way.”
“No, I–” Caitlyn made a noise of frustration, face scrunching up, and then she was really fuckin’ close.
Vi held her breath, not wanting to break the weird fucking moment.
“You’re infuriating,” Caitlyn breathed, and Vi tried - and failed - not to shiver when warm breath ghosted over her lips.
“Yeah, well–” Vi started to snark back…and then Vi’s night was officially the weirdest she’d had in a while, because Caitlyn Kiramman, conservative politician’s daughter, was kissing her like she was fucking starving and Vi was an all-you-can-eat buffet in the desert.

It would be like this forever one day, everything bedrock solid. Cait would wake up and there would be no sick moment of realization, no reacquainting herself with the gaping hole punched through her chest. The wound would heal, the infection would fade. She would look back on events without the feverish certainty that she could have done more, said more. Been more.
She didn’t believe it yet, not all the way, but she didn’t have to. Vi would help her.
Explorations of Cait and Vi's turbulent relationship in the first act of season two. An examination of the grief that slowly poisons their understanding of each other; a reflection on power, and the ways it is abused, denied, and mismanaged. Less of a relationship study than a relationship autopsy.
