Work Text:

Martyn's been sleeping in Mumbo's bed every night, now. He'd admitted the day after they got married that his tower was never really built to be a home, and that he'd just been sleeping on the ground in the Southlands' communal tower. As soon as he'd heard that, Mumbo had instantly demanded that Martyn sleep with him from now on (and Martyn grinned and said "how forward!" as Mumbo sputtered flusteredly.)

Yeah, it was nice to have company. Mumbo was sleeping easier and having Martyn to keep him warm in these late-Winter nights was a blessing. But it was also good for times like now, where Mumbo gets to silently cry into his husband's chest, and get an arm wrapped around him for comfort.

Grian was gone, exiled. He'd died and it was partially Mumbo's fault for letting it happen. Martyn had told him it wasn't his fault, that he couldn't have done anything, but couldn't he have? Mumbo's not stupid enough to have jumped in front of the arrow, or something, but he could've warned that Joel was there better... or just done something except stare!

With Grian gone, it feels like the Southlands are missing a key piece to the puzzle. Everything feels like it's falling apart and Mumbo is scared.

Martyn's hand rubs up and down his back. “You okay?” he asks. Of course, he knows Mumbo isn't okay, he can surely feel the tears staining his t-shirt. Mumbo pulls back, wiping his face with his sleeve.

Martyn tilts Mumbo's chin up in order to kiss him on the cheek. “Look, dude, it's gonna be fine. Grian's a smart guy, he'll get a life back from someone somehow. He already got one off of Scar,” Martyn reasons, thumb stroking Mumbo's cheek.

“Even if he doesn't, he seemed pretty happy causing havoc with Joel to me. The guy loves being red, so like, don't be that upset, because he isn't,” Martyn continues. It helps, if only a little.

“Yeah, you're right,” Mumbo exhales heavily.

“'Course I am,” Martyn grins. “What would you do without me?”

“...I don't know,” Mumbo mumbles. Martyn's joking, but, it's made him realize he can't really imagine how life from now on would be without Martyn. They've only been together for a couple weeks (jarring to remember that), but Mumbo loves him. His experience of this season would be dark without Martyn's humor and his comforting presence.

He's going to miss him so much when this is over.
