Work Text:

It was the smell of bacon that woke him up. Brain coming online slowly as he revelled in the feeling of warmth as the sun shone mutedly through the curtains. The grin he had on his face seemed to have taken up permanent residence there since they’d reconciled everything.

He loved these quiet moments the best, before the hustle and bustle of the day took over and they had places to be. Buck did most of the cooking, not because of some preconceived notion of roles, but purely because he loved it. He didn’t invest much time in thinking about love languages, but what he did know was cooking for people brought him joy, and knowing that they enjoyed it was the icing on the proverbial cake.

Breakfast however, was Tommy’s domain. Whether it was premade for them to grab before work, or lazy mornings like this, Tommy would always get up earlier and start cooking. Buck swore he could actually feel his heart swell a little everytime he heard Tommy whistling in the kitchen, that’s when he knew Tommy was at his most content. He’d first started notcing it when he was reading while Tommy worked on his jeep, then again while they did yard work and now it filtered through the cracked door to the kitchen, some theme song from a show they’d watched a few nights ago.

He stretched his arms above him, back bowing in a crescent shape as his body clicked satisfyingly. The door creaked open as he pulled himself up, pillows wedged between him and the headboard while Tommy strolled into the room, hands wrapped around a tray laden with food.

“Good morning, sleep well?” he asked as he placed the tray down on the bed, leaning over to place a light kiss to his forehead. Normally, Buck was a little more fussy about eating in bed, even the idea of crumbs making his brain twitch, but the smile on Tommy’s face everytime he walked through their door was enough to settle the feeling.

Buck let out a little “mhmm” noise as he made grabby hands for the plate of what looked like avocado on toast and whipped feta with a suspect pink sauce. Tommy diappeared for a minute, coming back holding two mugs full of coffee.

“Tommy, why is the sauce pink?” He said, mouth half full of food as the sauce in question ran down his finger.

“It’s blended beetroot baby, it’s pride month! And don’t look so offended, clearly it didn’t stop you from digging in.” Tommy laughed as he reached for his own.

Buck flushed at the mention, his first pride month as an out bisexual had come around shockingly fast. They’d talked about it previously, events they wanted to go to, how much of a big deal Buck wanted to make about it. He still felt a little like he was intruding on a space that wasn’t necessarily his. Tommy had caught him one night in a deep dive on queer history, slamming him with question after question rooted in anxiety of not being ‘queer enough’.

After a conversation with Hen and Karen that had included a few tears, he’d settled on the understanding that not knowing everything was okay, as long as he was still learning where he could and embracing the history of queer culture, lifting up the voices of people that didn’t have the privilege of being white and straight passing.

“Speaking of that, haven’t we got that BBQ today? I need to finish making the salad, did you get the burgers out the freezer last night? I forgot” Buck asked as he finished off his plate, greedily eyeing up what Tommy hadn’t eaten yet.

“Yeah the burgers are in the fridge, and don’t even think about it Buckley.” Tommy said as he swiped his plate out of reach. “I love you, I don’t love you that much.”

Buck stuck his bottom lip out in his signature pout and folded his arms with a huff.

“You’d deny your beloved boyfriend food? And in pride month too? Shame on you Kinard” That garnered a laugh from him as he brought the remainder of his toast up to Buck’s lips, smiling indulgently as Buck got that self satisfied look on his face before licking his lips.

“Is it safe to assume that’s your get out of jail free card for the remainder of June then?”

“Oh you best believe i’m going to milk this for all it’s worth baby, and you’ll let me because you love me” Buck replied with a gleeful look dancing in his eyes.

“That I do sweetheart, that I do.” Tommy smiled, leaning forward to move the now empty tray to the floor.

“The question is, do you love me enough to risk being late?”

Buck watched it go distractedly, eye’s jumping back to his boyfriend “Why are we going to be late? We don’t need to leave for another few hours.”

Tommy eyed his boyfriend with a grin, eye’s dipping down to his lips and back up again as he watched the cogs turn in Buck’s brain.

“Bit slow on the uptake this morning sweetheart?” Tommy grinned as Buck’s pupils dilated.

Oh.”

“Yeah, Oh. Come here, breakfast didn’t quite satisfy me.”

They were an hour late.
