Work Text:

“No.”

Tommy turned around and walked straight back out of the open house the realtor had taken them to. Buck made exasperated eye contact with the woman and went after him.

Baby, we didn’t even get to the kitchen this time, why is it a no?” Buck asked softly, eyeing the man that had been getting visibly more and more grumpy throughout the day.

“Did you see the porch on that thing? We’re not paying all that money to have a porch that’s going to collapse in on itself the minute the winter hits. No, let’s go to the next one.” Tommy folded his arms and Buck refrained from letting out the laugh that bubbled up inside him at the sight of his six-foot-something hulk of a boyfriend essentially pouting like a toddler right there on the sidewalk.

“Okay, I’ll let Julia know, anything else you want me to tell her so we don’t waste the rest of the day? She already knows your feelings on wallpaper and cabinets.” Buck said trying to keep the smile off his face. He was so used to being the particular one in the relationship that it gave him no end of joy to see Tommy being a little bitchy about crown molding.

Tommy eyed him suspiciously, looking for any evidence of mocking. Finding none he shook his head and turned, stomping back to the truck, leaving Buck to inform the flustered estate agent of the new pre-requisits.

The pattern continued from morning to afternoon, on the houses he could cajole Tommy to actually go into, he would last all of about five minutes before he found something that he couldn’t abide.

“And as you can see, there’s no wallpaper to be found, the kitchen was refitted two years ago, of course if you don’t like the colour or the handles we can change them, we can change anything really!” Julia looked about as over Tommy’s pickiness as Buck was. Looking at houses was supposed to be fun, Tommy looked like he’d rather walk into traffic than see another house that didn’t live up to expectations.

Thing’s were going well until they saw the master bedroom, exposed beams - a check on both their lists - but they’d been painted over. Buck heard the comment before Tommy even said it, pinning him with a look before smiling politely at Julia and deciding to call it a day.

Things were quiet on the way home. Buck couldn’t wrap his head around why Tommy was being so picky. All the things he’d hated were things that could be easily changed, so why was he putting his foot down so hard about them?

“Okay Kinard, lay it on me. What’s going on?” Buck said as they collapsed into bed that night.

Tommy sighed and sat up, head dropping back against the wall as Buck gazed up at him.

“None of them are right. I want them to be right, not death traps that cost hundreds of thousands and need the same amount spending on them to get it how we want it. I don’t want a house built by someone I don’t know, who’s got no qualifications for doing the electric and plumbing and find out it all needs reaplcing after we’ve been there six months” Tommy huffed. He knew he was being difficult about it, that all his boyfriend wanted was to have a house together, but if they were doing this, they were doing it right.

“Okay, I’ll give you death trap on that one with the porch, but the rest of them were nice.”

“Nice is stretching it a little baby, that last one had to have had psychopaths living in it to paint over those beams. Who does that?” Tommy could feel the pull of Buck’s cheeks against his bare torso as the younger man tried to cover his smile.

“Oh I’m glad you think this is funny” Buck watched with love in his eyes as Tommy dropped his bottom lip, eyes rolling as he pouted at him.

“Okay, okay I’m sorry, I just never realised you felt so strongly about exposed beams” Buck was giggling so hard at the end of his sentence that he barely got it out, choosing instead to lay gentle kisses on his boyfriends stomach.

“Are you done?” Tommy replied, tone erring on the side of bitchy.

Buck looked up, sensing that as he suspected, there was more to this wallpaper and draw handles.

“Okay, so what are we going to do? Because we can’t keep paying an estate agent to take us around houses that we don’t like, and we need to find somewhere that we don’t have to pay for and then spend a fortune on.” Buck asked seriously, he knew deep down that Tommy wasn’t being deliberately difficult, but he couldn’t read his mind.

Tommy stayed silent as he pondered the question, fingers stroking through Buck’s hair softly as they each got lost in their own thoughts.

“At this point it would be cheaper to just buy some land and build it ourselves” Buck said into the quiet, his little laugh trailing off as he felt Tommy’s stomach tense underneath him. He lifted his head and stared at his boyfriend. Tommy said nothing, but he’d lost that irritated look he’d been wearing all day.

“Is that-is that what you want to do? Build a house for us?” Buck asked, moving until he was sitting up fully facing him. Tommy remained quiet for a few beats.

“Yeah-yes. Yes I want us to build our house together.” He finally said, body relaxing as Buck grinned back at him.

“Are you sure? I never suggested it before because I didn’t think you’d want to” Buck said, reaching down to grab his Ipad from the charger.

“What gave you that idea? I never said anything because I thought you wouldn’t want to, it’s a huge amount of work, and a hell of a lot of money and we both work fulltime.”

“I think we’ve been a bit dumb here.” Buck said as he brought up his pinterest board labelled ‘House :)’. Tommy laughed as he pulled him closer. Staring over his shoulder as he started sorting through the different saved pictures.

“Ha! You don’t like metal sinks either!” He said as he clocked the pictures of ceramic sinks dotted all over.

“I never said I liked them! I just thought we’d swap it out!” Buck said, pushing gently against his shoulder as Tommy placed a kiss to his temple.

They tossed around ideas for a while, flicking through colour palettes and pictures of cabinets. It was stupid really, thought Tommy, that they hadn’t even entertained the idea earlier. He’d just assumed they’d talk about the decorating once they found a place they liked.

“Okay now this is important, the shower/bath situation.” Buck paused before he clicked onto a new board.

Tommy let out a laugh as he scanned the little squares once again before leaning forward to take the Ipad from his boyfriends hand.

“Hey!” Buck squawked as he rolled on top of him, settling himself on Tommy’s lap.

“As long as the shower is big enough for both us at the same time and the bath is wide enough to fit your ass in it, I’m happy.” Tommy smirked as he put the Ipad to the side, hands coming to rest on Buck’s hips.

“Are you saying my ass is fat?”

“Baby boy, you know your ass is fat, and you know I love it.”

Three weeks later they’d paid for the plot of land their house would stand on.
