Work Text:

He was trying not to stare at you - he was also pretty sure he was failing miserably but who could blame him? You were looking like an angel who descended from heaven, with her wing shining during her happiest hours, an angel that is his.

He was too busy with his stare that he didn't feel your presence, slowly walking towards him before wrapping your arms around him - he couldn't stop himself from letting out a sigh of contempt, far too eager to be in your arms, the only place where he felt at home and safe, a place where he could unmask himself, the only place where he could let out his inner self without fear of judgement and vulnerability.

‘’Zaynie?’’ he hummed too busy in your embrace ‘’Do you think we can go back to the pediatric ward, I promised the kids a storytime before I leave’’ he pulled his head back from your neck hearing your words - placing it on your shoulder blade for his sanity and planting a kiss under your ear.

‘’I think I can arrange that, would you like to go now, love?’’ He says and he couldn't help but chuckle at the joy evident in your eyes from his words.

-

Hw was never good with words but he was sure that he could construct poems about the emotions that were being broadcasted on her face, nothing bought him joy then seeing her smile, filled with pure joy and happiness - a stare that made him forget about all the bad in the world and only remember the good.

She looked at the kids in the ward with such admiration that his own heart soared seeing how she attended to each one of them, making sure they were comfortable before sitting in the midst of the excited children. Her face moved automatically when expressing the paragraphs written in the book - that was resting on her lap.

He sees the children, excited and curious, waiting to bombard her with questions, something he had seen that she had developed a liking for.

He couldn't help but walk over to her, wanting her to acknowledge his presence - not willing to admit that he misses the attention given to him.

It didn't take long for her to notice him, no doubt due to her sharp skills as a hunter or due to her used to his presence - he hoped it was the latter.

She looked up at him, her eyes still shining- and he hoped quite selfishly that she would never take her gaze from him.

Some children looked puzzled by the man that was looming next to their beloved storyteller, some little faces lighting up with recognition, realizing who the man is, and he remembered to offer a smile to all of them before kneeling to her level and planting a kiss on her temple - gaining ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the little crowd that was watching them intensely.

She offered him to continue reading the story after he stood back up, a hand still resting on her shoulder - something he’d politely declined, sure that the children would find boring with his logical way of speaking, something she didn't hesitate to veto, complimenting it an act that did not fail to make heat rise up to his ears - he was grateful that his ears were covered, saving his dignity.

She faced back at the children when he walked to the corner of the room, to take a chair to sit on and listen to her - for a moment he felt like a child, snuggling into the arms of his mother, eagerly awaiting for the next book that was going to be read to him - he remembered how she always sat below the willow tree, awaiting his presence after school only to read his her new book she had acquired from the library.

He shook himself back, now watching her with fondness only a lover could muster and during that moment, he thought to himself, he is in love with her, the woman who was his pillar during childhood, his pillar and inspiration that got him to where he was now.

And he found himself contempt with this fact, eagerly imagining their future together in the quite dim lights of the ward.
