Metaphor and Allegory

Summary:

Nick waits in line to get his new favourite author’s autograph.

Notes:

Happy birthday Deadfangirlwalking! I hope you have a lovely day!

Work Text:

“Have books ready to sign, please!” the slightly aggressive lady manning the queue snaps. Nick holds his copy tight against his chest. It’s been well thumbed through, at this point, mainly towards the end.

Truthfully, the narrative went over his head a little; picked by his queer book club for this month’s read. There were an overwhelming number of references to Greek literature for someone who usually enjoys a good romantic romp.

Nick persevered, in the name of cheese, wine and canapés. And when everyone else gushed about the symbolism and the metaphor and the allegory, he nodded politely and nibbled on a wedge of brie.

So, if he’s honest, he’s not here in the name of good literature: and it’s very good literature, he knows. The fact that it wasn’t his usual thing doesn’t change that.

No, he’s here for one reason only: to catch a glimpse of a pair of blue eyes and curly dark hair in person.

“Next!” the queue dictator calls out. Nick steps dutifully towards the table and tries not to embarrass himself by swooning.

“Hi, I’m Charlie,” Charlie says, even though his face is displayed all around them. Nick swallows heavily.

“Hi, I’m Nick.”
