Chapter 1: A photoperiodic reaction!

Chapter Text

Kara swirled the tea that had long gone cold on her. Jason had made it for her, before kissing her forehead and heading out to meet Alfred and talk to him about the fact that there was going to be a great-grandson for the man to cuddle.

Kara…hadn’t told anyone yet, but she knew she needed to do it. Kal-El was technically her head of house, although he didn’t recognize or respect it. He was also her cousin, and she wanted him to be happy for her. She wanted him to see her as family. Maybe a baby was the way to do it? Either way, he deserved to know that Kryptonian-human reproduction was possible naturally. Though, she had no idea if a human woman could survive a Kryptonian pregnancy.

Rao, she didn’t know if she could survive it. They had been using the genesis chambers for generations to ensure that all offspring were as perfect as possible for what they were meant to do, given what they had to work with in the parents’ genome. Natural reproduction was an old idea, and one she had been taught was impossible.

…But Leslie had assured her that everything seemed fine, and Kal deserved to know. So, she took the train to Metropolis, still uncertain of her powers, and not wanting to fall out of the sky. The problem was, standing outside of Kal’s apartment with his wife, Kara couldn’t make herself knock on it. As much as she wanted him to be happy and embrace her, she knew that she was far less important to him than the people who he loved as ‘Clark.’

If she disappeared, he wouldn’t notice until he needed her for something. So, she walked away. She walked through the city to a Jitters and sat down at a table, pulling out her phone. She had one person who might care. The number was proof of that. He had no reason to give it to her, if he didn’t care. She tapped on the number, taking a deep breath as it rang and hoping against hope he would answer.

“Hey kid, you alright?” The gruff voice of Guy Gardner filled her ears and made her smile.

“Yeah, but I really need to talk to you. Do you have time and a way to get to Metropolis for lunch?” She glanced at the nearest street-sign. “If you’re…on a business trip it can wait.”

“S’fine.” Guy said gruffly. “Do I need to beat someone’s ass?”

“You’re probably going to want to.” Kara admitted. “But no, it’s nothing bad. I was going to tell Clark, but…it didn’t feel right. Should I order you something?”

“A sandwich and a coffee, oh and one of those little peach things if they got ‘em right now.” Guy suggested. “And get whatever you want, my treat.”

“You’re the best.” Kara said with a smile, standing up and heading inside to order. “Thanks, Guy.”

“I’m here anytime, kid.” Guy replied. “Well, when I can be. You know how the Corps are.”

“Yeah, I know.” Kara said with a smile, bittersweet memories of her time in the Red Lantern Corps surfacing. “But there’s a reason I want to tell you before my cousin.”

Guy chuckled. “I’m sure Big Blue will hate that.” He admitted, sounding pleased.

“Probably.” Kara admitted. “But it’s the first time I’m telling anyone and I’m not sure how he’ll react. I want the first person I tell to be happy for me.”
