Work Text:

Joe took a deep breath of the fresh Los Angeles air. Well, as fresh as LA could get. The sun stretched towards the horizon, casting long shadows against his home. Their home, he corrected in his head, looking at his boyfriend waiting in the car. Husband. He had a husband now.

Smiling, he focused on Andy. With the sunglasses his husband (husband) was wearing, Joe couldn’t tell for sure where he was looking. The unlocked cell phone was a good clue though. He was probably making sure his mother was okay. She had to miss the wedding because of a broken ankle the day before. It had taken the collective power of her and Joe to convince Andy that no, it’s not the end of the world, we can always head out there in a few days, relax and focus on getting married. Andy’s mother was there in spirit though, constantly calling in the lead-up to the ceremony. She promised she wouldn’t bother them during their honeymoon, but Andy probably thought it was fine to check in, given it was still their wedding day and not their honeymoon yet.

Joe sighed. Andy was the sweetest, most thoughtful man Joe knew.

Andy turned off his phone and returned it to his pocket, which was Joe’s cue to open the car door for him. Andy smiled. “Thanks, Joe.”

Joe bowed. “Of course, Mr. Trohman.” Standing up straight, he held out his hand. “Anything for you, Mr. Trohman.”

Despite the glasses, Joe could tell Andy was rolling his eyes. Still, he accepted Joe’s helping hand. They walked up the driveway together, Joe leaning a bit against his husband (husband). The reception was small, tight-knit, and light on alcohol, but Joe still ended up a bit tipsy. Besides, what else could a man do when walking with his strong, handsome husband (husband) but lean on him, just a bit. It didn’t help that Andy was shorter than him, but Joe made it work.

As they approached the front door of their house, Joe dug in his pocket for the keys. In all his infinite grace, he managed to drop them on the stoop. Andy held up his free hand, gently maneuvering Joe off of his shoulder. “I’ve got it,” he said, moving to pick them up.

“Oh my,” Joe said as Andy handed back the keys. “Thank you so much, Mr. Trohman.”

Andy raised his eyebrows. “Why do you keep doing that, sweetheart?” he laughed.

You’re the sweetheart, thought Joe. What he said was, “Well, you married me, so you’re Mr. Trohman now. And I married you, so I’m Mr. Hurley! It makes perfect sense.”

Andy lightly elbowed Joe’s side. “We didn’t even change our last names!”

“Yeah, I know,” Joe said, fiddling with the lock. When he finally unlocked the door, he opened it with a flourish. Then, he pocketed the keys and draped his arms around Andy’s neck. “Now carry me through the threshold like a good husband, Mr. Trohman.”

Andy licked his lips with a smile. “Alright, Mr. Hurley,” he said, hoisting Joe into his big, strong arms. Joe screamed with laughter as his husband (husband) carried him into the newest chapter of their lives.
