Chapter 4: The Confession to Alfred

The evening had settled in, quiet and cool. The fireplace in the study still cast a warm, flickering light, but the day's events had given way to a shared stillness, a quiet contentment that had become the new normal.

Bruce and Clark sat on the sofa, a comfortable silence stretching between them. Bruce was reading, his arm around Clark's shoulders, while Clark leaned into his side, his hand resting over his abdomen.

"Alfred's been acting strange," Clark murmured, his voice a soft hum against Bruce's chest. "He made me a special tea today. Said it was for 'fortifying the constitution.' And he's been asking me if I've had any... unusual cravings."

Bruce closed his book, placing it on the coffee table. He looked down at Clark, a knowing smile on his face. "He knows, Clark. He always has a sense of knowing about things."

A gentle knock on the doorframe announced Alfred's presence. He entered, carrying a tray with a small teapot and two delicate teacups. He set it down with his usual quiet efficiency, but his eyes, a deep well of warmth and affection, were fixed on Clark.

"Good evening, Masters," Alfred said, his voice as smooth as ever. "I trust you both are well?"

"We are, Alfred," Bruce said, his gaze meeting the butler's. It was a silent invitation, a signal to drop the pretense.

Alfred poured the tea, his hands steady, though a faint, almost imperceptible tremor betrayed his emotion. He handed one cup to Bruce and the other to Clark.

"Clark… has something he'd like to tell you," Bruce said, his voice soft. He placed a gentle hand on Clark’s back, a gesture of quiet encouragement.

Clark took a deep breath, his brilliant blue eyes locking with Alfred’s. "Alfred," he began. And paused, a thoughtful expression came over his face. Just as in the study facing the portrait, he had to confess to Alfred.

"Bruce and I... we're adding to our family. Alfred, I am going to have a baby."

Alfred froze, the teapot in his hand, a single drop of tea suspended in mid-air before falling silently back into the pot. His carefully composed mask of professionalism cracked, revealing a profound, unshielded emotion. His eyes welled up with unshed tears, and a small, trembling smile touched his lips.

"A baby," he whispered, the words filled with a mix of disbelief and overwhelming joy. "A child… miraculous… there will be a child in this house."

He set the teapot down with a soft clink and, for the first time in either of their memories, Alfred's composure completely broke. He stood before Clark and Bruce, his hands reaching out to hold both of theirs as they stood as well. "This is… this is the most wonderful news I have ever had the privilege of hearing."

Tears streamed freely down Alfred's face now, but his smile was radiant. He held their hands tightly, Clark shifted his stance looking down at his abdomen where his free hand rubbed, then looked back up to Alfred.

“We would absolutely appreciate in you being a grandfather to our child, Alfred. Please say yes.”

Alfred's head snapped up, his gaze moving from the area of Clark's abdomen to the earnest hope in his eyes. A soft, choked sob escaped him, and he squeezed their hands. "My dear sons," he said, his voice cracking with his emotions, "there is nothing in this world I would say yes to more.”

Tears streamed freely down Alfred's face now, but his smile was radiant.

Clark and Bruce moved in unison, wrapping the old butler in a shared embrace. In that moment, surrounded by the echoes of a past that had defined them, a new future began to take shape.

It wasn't just a new life growing within Clark; it was a new life for all of them, a new horizon that promised a future brighter and more full of hope than any of them had ever dared to imagines.
