Work Text:

“You really should’ve left me in that vault,” Rose tells the Doctor quietly, when they have a minute alone while Adam takes his time in the bathroom. (Vortex-sick, because of course he is.)

The Doctor stares at the space above her hair. “Yeah,” he admits, “I should have.”

“But you didn’t.”

“I did, at first.” Something in him shivers, remembering that moment — Rose sealed in alone with a Dalek, facing extermination because of him. “Couldn’t do it again.”

She bites her lip. “But you thought no one on the planet would’ve been safe. I mean, if that Dalek hadn’t… changed. Nobody on the planet.”

“Nobody in the constellation, potentially,” he says grimly. “Or the universe. Never underestimate a Dalek.”

“I won’t get a chance,” she points out. “Since we just saw the last one… die.” She closes her eyes a moment; he sees her shudder. “But Doctor, I’m just one person.”

“You’re one in a million,” he counters.

“So’s everyone. One in several billions, actually.”

“Yeah.” He takes a breath. “Must be nice.”

Rose looks like she’s going to say something else. But at that point Adam finally emerges from the loo, so she lets it go and just sighs.
