Work Text:

Sometimes it hurts to look at her.

Sydney's sitting in the bear’s unfinished dining room, going over design plans. She’s wearing an old cable knit sweater. There’s a moth hole in the front of it. Every few minutes she toys with it, rubbing the torn material between her thumb and pointer finger.

There is ink smeared on her hands from marking up the plans, crossing out things, and suggesting new ones in the margins. He’s sure her ideas are better than his anyway.

She’s better than him. She’s everything good and right about this fucked up place.

Sometimes, when he looks at her like this he thinks that he might love her.

Syd looks up, her gaze meeting his across the room. She smiles like she is genuinely excited to see him, like they don’t spend every day together in arguably too close quarters. It makes his chest feel tight.

He loves her.

Fuck.

Sometimes he makes her ache.

They are at his apartment, cooking side by side in his cramped kitchen. He’s in jeans and a sweater that costs twice her rent. His hair is a mess. He’s been running his hands through it all day.

When she holds up a spoon for him to taste his eyes find hers. It makes her shiver.

“Tremendous, Chef,” He says. His words are so genuine. She feel’s sick, “Did you use lime?”

“Yeah,” she looks back at the pot as he takes another bite.

“Genius,” He says, almost to himself. Sydney squirms, feeling too big for her skin.

She wants to tell him that he's a genius, that he knows more than she ever will, and that he makes her feel lightheaded when he compliments her food. That she thinks she loves him, not just as a chef but as a person. A messy, angry, imperfect person.

“This should go on the menu,” Carmy tells her and she wants to scream. Instead, she nods, smiling.

“Thanks, Chef.”

When he smiles back at her he uses his whole face.

It takes everything in her power not to kiss it off his lips.

Fuck.
