Chapter Text

"I'm just fucking with you, Whitaker. God, you are such a huckleberry" Trinity chuckles to herself as she presumably waits outside of Dennis room.

Dennis huffs, exasperated but grateful. He felt as if he were walking a tightrope with Trinity. On the one hand, she did offer him a place to stay (still not super sure about that?), but on the other hand, she has such an erratic mood, its hard to decipher whether she's just joking or not.

Regardless, he has nothing to lose, and if anything he can just come back here. But if there is any chance that he can get a sense of normalcy in his life…he'll take it.

Dennis packed his computer, charger, his toiletries, and the few textbooks he took from college (he didn't want to waste too much time, he still needs to finish a couple of patient logs for school). His clothes were already tucked away at the bottom of his backpack, never really been able to situate himself at any given place.

He turns off the lights and sweeps the place, if this truly works out, then he would have to come back to deep clean it.

He sighs, shuts off the lights, and walks outside the room to find trinity leaning on the wall checking her phone.

"So um, im ready to go?" Dennis huffs, tired, but with a hidden excitement.

Trinity looks up, surveys, and frowns at the singular backpack that Dennis carries. It goes away as fast as it came, making Dennis think that he imagined it.

"That was fast, you eager Huckleberry?" Trinity smothers her mouth once she see's Dennis's blush reach his face.

"I- uhm, no i just don't have many things, sorry" he stutters. Trinity laughter stops, and you can feel the tension within the hallway.

"Stop apologizing so much, you're making me feel bad. C'mon lets go" She motions for him to follow her.

He catches himself before apologizing again and follows her.

They take the stairs, the pitter patter of their shoes filling in the silence between them until they got to the bottom floor, where the sounds of misery and wailing burst through the air filling both of their minds.

"I am so glad our shift finished when it did, I couldn't stand a minute more" Trinity moaned as she pushed through the exit doors into the lobby.

Dennis held his response, waiting until the pushed through all the patients in the lobby and walking into the warm summer-fall air he had grown to love.

"Yeah, I agree, today has truly been something" He sighed, feeling the air warm his face, but not so much as to make him sweat.

Trinity nodded and walked them to the parking lot, walking along the long line of cars from the doctors. She finally stopped at an old navy blue jeep Cherokee.

"Sweet ride, very homey" Dennis said, still trying to balance his words.

"Can't tell if that was a compliment or not, but ill let it slide considering I've been picking on you all day long" Trinity say's as she rummages through her backpack, looking for her car keys.

A quick 'a-ha' and a quick dispute with her car door, and the car is ready to go.

She slides into the driver's seat, mumbling incoherent sentences that Dennis is sure isn't age appropriate for anybody to hear.

He reaches for the back door, ready to crash as he starts to feel his bones ache, and his skin sag.

"What are you doing?" trinity asks whilst looking at him.

"I, omg im so sorry, i can take the bus- sorry i didn't know you didn't want me ridding with you-"

"No, I meant, what are you doing sitting in the backseat? Are you that scared of sitting next to me?" Trinity cuts through his rambling.

Dennis brain short-circuited. Out of all outcomes, this one was the last one he expected and more so from Trinity.

"Uh-yeah, i mean no, no im not scared. Sorry" He shuts the back door and reaches for the front one.

Only to find it locked.

"Trinity, i think its locked, I cant open it" Dennis starts panicking again. What if this is one huge cruel joke?

She rolls down the passenger window and glares at him.

"I told you to stop saying sorry" She huffs.

Seriously?

"Okay ill stop-" he see's her glare harder "-for real this time" he quickly added on.

Deeming his answer satisfactory, she unlocks the door and lets him slide in.

The first thing he notices is how clean the car is. A small portable trash can sits in the cup holder, and everything seems to have a place in her car. A couple of trinkets sit on her dashboard, all very simple and reflective of who Trinity was.

A gym bag sits at the bottom of Dennis feet, large with a yoga mat attached to the top.

She notices, and pulls it to the back seat, humming to herself all the while.

After they get settled, she revs the engine on and finally pulls them out of the parking lot onto the main road of the hospital.

It all felt very surreal, in Dennis opinion. He had only met Trinity for a couple of hours, and now he was on the way to her house where he is to presumably have his own room and bathroom.

What a crazy day.

He leans to look out on the window, careful to not smudge or in any way get it dirty.

As he starts to slip into his thoughts, Trinity speaks up.

"Pass me a protein bar would you?" She sighs, also feeling the exhaustion.

If Dennis was tired before, he sure as hell wasn't now. He scrambled through his backpack and scoured the car as fast as he could.

"Its in the glove compartment, get yourself one too" She laughed a bit after seeing Dennis struggle.

He sighs, and pulls a bar from his backpack, and putting another one on his lap.

He proceeds to open trinity's and hand it to her. She takes it from him, humming after taking a couple of bites.

At a red light, she pokes Dennis and points to her phone. Then she points to the stereo.

He connects the dots quickly enough. "You want me to put music from your phone?"

She nods, chewing through her mouthful. "Yeah, the passkey is 31983, connect it to the Bluetooth and put the first playlist that shows up, its like 15 minutes from here to my house" she explains and then focuses on the road.

Dennis nods, and follows her instructions. Her lock screen was a picture of what he presumed was her cat; an upside picture of it while it stretched in the sun.

He silently giggled, and then pulled her playlist from Spotify. It was appropriately named 'after work tunes'.

The first song was surprisingly-

"Is that DtMF by Bad Bunny???" Dennis questioned, slightly surprised but mostly shocked.

"Yea, and what about it country boy?" She asks, an edge to her voice, but not truly mad.

"Nothing, I like his songs too" He agrees on a whim, although it is truthful.

"You don't even know what he is saying" She laughs, loud and proud.

"And?? God forbid a white boy catches a vibe" He laughs along, decompressing to her playlist.

That only makes her laugh harder, making Dennis highly concerned of them crashing and making a mental note of NOT making trinity laugh while she is behind the wheel.

Today really was something.

But he wasn't complaining.
