It’s quiet in the main Sickbay when Una enters, and most of the lights are dimmed. Una quickly makes her way to the private room in the back and peers inside. She finds Marie lying on a biobed, unmoving. Chris sits beside her, eyes fixed on her vitals monitor. One of her hands is clasped between his.
Una knocks softly on the doorframe. Chris looks up, his eyes bloodshot. “How is she?” Una asks gently.
“No change,” he replies. “M’Benga says it could be hours or…” He swallows hard. “How’s the bridge?”
“Everything’s fine. I came to relieve you,” Una replies. “You should get some rest.”
“Oh. No.” He shakes his head. “I appreciate the offer, Una, but…I’m not leaving.” He clutches Marie’s hand tighter. “I have to be here for her.”
Una nods. “Yeah, I figured. But I had to try.” She places a hand on Chris’ shoulder. “I asked a yeoman to bring some food and a cot. And Christine will be dropping by soon in case you need anything else.”
Chris nods, flashing a tired smile. “Thank you, Number One. I owe you.”
She squeezes his shoulder. “Just take care of yourself. That’s all we need.”
