    "Why are they so restless?" Mairon had asked him one day and the maia had smiled.
    "I made them blind, so they can do nothing but sing, not knowing whether it's day or night," he explained as he stroked the feathers of one of the songbirds. "Do you know that when they're blind, their singing becomes even more beautiful?"

    Mairon had tilted his head, intrigued by that explanation. "But if their singing becomes even more beautiful when they're blind, why didn't Erü create them directly without eyes?"
