Sonic sat on the rooftop, looking out at the city below. There was no denying the view was beautiful, but he still felt like there was a grey filter over everything, making the world seem dull and pointless.
He mechanically took a drag of his cigarette.
He didn't hear the other hedgehog approaching. Or, well, maybe he did, but he didn't particularly care. No, he was content to ignore the other boy altogether.
If only it were that simple.
"Sonic..." Silver said, audibly concerned. Sonic sighed and put out his cigarette. He knew Silver didn't like him smoking. Silver didn't want him killing his lungs and body with nicotine and various carcinogens.
Silver always cared way more than Sonic could bring himself to.
"Hey, Silver" the blue hedgehog muttered, patting the bit of roof next to him. Silver cautiously walked over and sat by him, doing his best to ignore the remaining smell of cigarette smoke. "The sun's gonna come up soon"
"Are you okay, Sonic?" Silver asked softly. Sonic laughed.
"Is anyone?" he joked, but Silver didn't seem to find it funny. Sonic's smile fell as he saw the concern on his friend's face. "Sorry"
"Don't apologize" Silver replied. "I just..." A sigh. "I just worry about you, y'know?"
"Well, I'm not going anywhere"
"And neither am I" Silver replied earnestly. "You're stuck with me"
Sonic smiled and looked back out at the city below, mentally noting the sun beginning to rise over the horizon. No longer alone, suddenly the world seemed a bit more vibrant.
"I can live with that"
