Sethos waved Scara over, a huge smile on his face. “Hat Guy, over here!”
The party was quieter in this room and was the reason Scara left the main area. Everyone was too noisy and someone had found the liquor. The last thing he wanted to do was be around a bunch of drunk twenty-somethings.
“What are you doing?” Scara asked, frowning.
Alhaitham, Kaveh, Tighnari, Cyno, and Sethos were sitting in a circle, an empty wine bottle at the center.
“We’re about to play spin the bottle. Want to join?” Kaveh piped up.
“How old are you losers, twelve?” Scara sneered. Still his heart skipped a beat knowing that if he played there was a chance he could kiss Sethos. Not like he couldn’t do that anytime he wanted anyway but…
“Come on,” Sethos grinned. “It’ll be fun!”
“I have also been roped in,” Alhaitham sighed. “Please do not let me suffer alone.”
Scara rolled his eyes. If they hadn’t all included him since they started college together, Scara would have just walked away and left them to their weird fun. But he supposed he did hold a soft spot for each of them, even if he would never say it aloud.
Sethos was making puppy dog eyes at him, clearly desperate for his boyfriend to join. Scara rolled his eyes and took a seat between Kaveh and Tighnari where there was a gap.
“I assume everyone knows how to play?” Cyno asked.
There were various nods and spoken agreements around the circle. Scara crossed his legs and leaned back on his hands, eyes scanning the others. Obviously, he would be most happy with kissing his boyfriend. Everyone else? He wouldn’t really mind. A kiss during the game wouldn’t mean anything.
“So,” Sethos rubbed his hands together excitedly, “Who goes first?”
“Rock, paper scissors?” Kaveh suggested.
“Youngest in the group?” Cyno shrugged.
“Oh my god, you’re all idiots,” Tighnari sighed and reached for the bottle, spinning it fast.
It slowed and everyone watched with bated breath. Scara felt his heart lurch as it seemed it was going to land on him but stopped short. Kaveh grinned and leaned into the center of the circle. The two kissed, lips slotted together for more than a few seconds.
Scara could feel his face heating as witnessing the kiss right in front of his face. He didn’t want to be so close to either of them, so he leaned back. Sethos caught his eye and wiggled his brows. It made Scara snort and hide a smile. He didn’t want anyone to know he might actually be happy they invited him to join their game.
“My turn then,” Kaveh beamed, reaching for the bottle. His wrist was a bit off, making the glass shoot across the circle and hit Alhaitham’s foot.
“It counts,” the archaeology major said and grabbed the back of his boyfriend’s head to plant a wet kiss on Kaveh’s lips. The two got a little too into it and had to be reminded by Cyno that they were still playing.
“Ahaha, sorry,” Kaveh blushed. “Got a little carried away.”
“More like Alhaitham was jealous,” Scara said under his breath knowing how possessive he was over Kaveh.
The game continued, each person getting a turn. Except Scara, who was getting bored. He started to wonder if they were purposefully excluding him, trying to pick other people by spinning the bottle at a specific speed.
Scara hugged his legs and rested his chin on his knees. His eyes scanned the group and saw that everyone else seemed to be wearing expressions of excitement. He looked toward Sethos, who was leaning back on his hands, looking smug after having hissed Kaveh. It was nothing more than a peck on the lips, but still, Scara felt his stomach twisting into knots. He didn’t like this game so much anymore.
“Oh,” Cyno said, pulling Scara’s attention.
That was when he noticed the bottle was pointed toward him. Amethyst eyes stared at it for a long while before sliding upward to look at Cyno. The other man’s face looked disappointed, his lips downturned and eyes scrunched.
Scara unfolded himself and leaned into the circle. He just wanted to get this over with. Cyno leaned in, too, placing a hand on his shoulder as he tilted his head and slotted their lips together. Scara counted up to five and pulled away when Cyno seemed like he was just going to keep their lips pressed together.
The knots in his stomach tightened. He didn't like this feeling. Especially when Sethos looked a little uncomfortable. Cyno was his cousin after all. Maybe it was weird for him to see his boyfriend and cousin kiss.
“Hey, your turn Scara,” Kaveh reminded him.
“Oh, right,” he responded but didn’t move.
A hand rubbed soothing circles into his back and Scara turned to see Tighnari offering him a small smile.
“It's okay. It’s just a game,” he said quietly. “And don’t worry about Cy, he’s been trying to get the bottle to land on me every turn he gets.”
That actually made Scara feel a little better. Still, he wished the knots would loosen. He leaned forward and grasped the bottle. With a flick of his wrist, it spun fast. As it began to slow, Scara’s heart beat faster in his chest. The bottle stopped and Scara’s eyes followed where it pointed.
“Alright then,” Alhaitham smirked.
He leaned into the circle and Scara swallowed tightly before doing the same. A finger hooked beneath Scara’s chin, tilting his face up slightly before soft lips pressed against his gently. It was sweet and not what he expected from Alhaitham at all.
Scara blinked a few times when they pulled apart and went back to hugging his legs. He could see Kaveh watching him out of the corner of his eye and it made him feel uncomfortable. Would he be mad that Scara kissed his boyfriend?
He couldn’t look at Sethos. It hurt to think about what expression he was wearing. Scara buried his face in his knees and took a shuddering breath.
“I think we’re gonna call it quits,” Sethos announced suddenly, making Scara snap his head up.
“Huh, why?” he asked, but his boyfriend just gently wrapped his fingers around Scara’s bicep and helped him to his feet.
“Okay, good night you guys,” Tighnari called out as Sethos led them away.
They didn’t talk at all as they navigated their way through the party, avoiding drunk college students. Sweaty bodies pushed into them and Scara felt Sethos grip him tighter.
Once they were outside, away from the couple of groups drinking and laughing on the lawn, Scara asked the only question that was on his mind.
“Are you mad at me?”
Sethos jerked back. “What?! No! I thought you were upset so I figured you’d want an excuse to stop playing.”
“I–” Scara choked on his words. Tears burned at his eyes and his bottom lip began to tremble. He felt ridiculous.
“Oh, baby,” Sethos whispered. “Come here.”
He wrapped his arms around Scara and pulled him in close, cradling the back of his head and kissing his hair. Scara encircled his boyfriend’s waist and held on for dear life. He squeezed his eyes shut tight, trying to stave off the tears.
“I only want to kiss you,” he finally whispered.
Sethos held him impossibly closer. “And I only want to kiss you. So, how about we remedy all that silly game play and make up?”
Scara snorted but nodded all the same. His eyes were still wet when Sethos leaned in, pressing their lips together. The kiss was soft and warm and all Scara really wanted. He loved Sethos and he felt incredibly stupid for letting some party game make him so upset.
Slowly, he began to relax and moved his lips against his boyfriend’s. Sethos responded with fervor, his fingers playing with the strands of hair at the base of Scara’s neck.
Someone nearby whistled seductively and the two pulled apart.
“Dumbass,” Scara hissed.
Sethos laughed and leaned their foreheads together. “Better?”
“Mmm, yeah.”
“No more spin the bottle for us, I guess.”
Scara agreed and kissed Sethos again, the knots in his stomach finally gone. His lips quirked at the corners as a thought came to him. Sethos was the best kisser and he was the luckiest guy to be able to call him his boyfriend.
