Work Text:
Ash Ketchum sat on a pier on Melemele Island in the Alola region, sketching the Sharpedo floating on the surface. His faithful partner, Pikachu, was sitting near Sharpedo, happily catching away in Pokémon language.
"Hey Pikachu," Ash called, holding up four pencils in different shades of teal. "Which shade matches Sharpedo?"
Pikachu studied Sharpedo for a few seconds before walking over to Ash and grabbing the correct pencil with his paw.
"Thanks, buddy," Ash smiled, putting the other pencils down before taking the pencil from Pikachu to shade his drawing.
The jet ski instructor, who had been watching from her kiosk, approached Ash.
"You know dear," she smiled, hoping she wouldn't scare him. "You're very welcome to ride Sharpedo. He's fast but gentle and will take very good care of you. You'll be perfectly safe."
"I believe you," Ash smiled politely. "And I appreciate it but no thank you. I'm happy doing this and I'm almost finished, anyway."
"Okay then," the jet ski instructor smiled.
Ash nodded as he finished the last of the shading. After putting down his pencils, he held up the book so Sharpedo could see.
"Do you like it?" he asked shyly.
"Sharpedo!" Sharpedo beamed as it admired the picture.
"It's really good," the jet ski instructor smiled. "You're a great artist."
Ash blushed as he packed his pencils and his book into his bag before pulling out a camera, hanging the strap around his neck.
"Thank you for letting me draw Sharpedo, ma'am," he said as he placed the bag on his back. "Thank you too, Sharpedo."
"Shar!" Sharpedo smiled, wiggling in the water so it looked like his fin was waving.
Ash smiled at the cute sight before quickly raising his camera to snap a couple of pictures.
"Please come back," the ski instructor grinned. "I'm sure Sharpedo would love to take you to explore the reefs."
"Shar!" Sharpedo agreed.
“Thank you,” Ash nodded as Pikachu jumped onto his shoulder. “Could you tell me which way to the Shiny Milotic Hotel? I’m staying there but I can’t remember which way I came from.”
“It’s just down the beach that way,” the ski instructor pointed. “It’s the biggest hotel with a lobby that’s always open and mosaics of Milotics everywhere. You can’t miss it.”
“Thanks again,” Ash bowed his head before walking up the wooden dock.
Once he was on the sand, he checked his watch. If he remembered correctly, his mum told him before he left that she and Mr Mime were planning to enjoy the sun and some Pinap juice in the pool area. He had only been gone for a couple of hours so she and Mr Mime were probably still at the pool.
“Let’s go, buddy,” he said quietly before walking up the beach in the direction of the hotel where he was staying with his family.
As he walked, he occasionally took pictures of the different Pokémon he saw or Pikachu pointed out. Alola was stunning; so bright and warm with so many Pokémon. Some Ash recognised and some that were completely new. It was amazing. Suddenly, he came across two trainers having a battle. He paused to watch. It looked like fun. What he wouldn’t give to have a Pokémon battle? Feeling tears well up, he turned away and started to walk faster, hoping the tears wouldn't fall.
"Pika?" Pikachu asked in concern, patting Ash's cheek.
"I'm alright Pikachu," he sniffed. "Just missing it."
Pikachu nodded. He understood. He missed it too; battling other Pokémon and getting a new family member. He would love to have a battle but he knew Ash was hurting after Kalos and he couldn't enjoy battling anymore. So like the loyal electric mouse he was, Pikachu stuck by Ash and respected his wishes.
"Pika!" Pikachu suddenly yelled in alarm.
Hearing Pikachu's yell, Ash froze. "What?! What's wrong?"
"Pika, pika!" Pikachu said, pointing down.
Ash looked down to see that he was about to step on a Pokémon's tail. Ash jumped backwards in shock, tears falling. The Pokémon gave Ash a confused look, switching its thin, black tail.
"I'm sorry," he apologises, stepping around the Pokémon before continuing to walk. "I'm so sorry."
Pikachu looked over his shoulder to give the Pokémon an apologetic look before looking at Ash, who was weeping silently. One year. It had been one year since Ash, Pikachu and their friends from Kalos had gotten hurt by Lysandre and Ash was still suffering as if it had happened last week. Nightmares, panic attacks and no longer able to touch Pokémon except Pikachu or battle without hyperventilating.
"Pika," Pikachu chirped sadly, licking his cheek free of tears.
"Thanks, buddy," Ash smiled appreciatively.
The two of them continued to walk quietly (Ash still taking photos of random Pokémon as he went) until they finally reached the large hotel they were staying at with Delia and Mr Mime. Ash stood in the huge foyer and looked around, occasionally taking a few seconds to admire the different Milltoc mosaics but he couldn't see his mother or Mr Mime anywhere.
"Do you see Mum anywhere?" he asked Pikachu, just in case he missed her.
Pikachu shook his head.
“Then she must still be in the pool area,” he said, looking for a sign that said “pool area.”
He eventually spotted a group of arrows made of driftwood attached to a wall pointing in different directions with different words stencilled into the wood. Spying the one that said “pool”, Ash made his way down the correct corridor before reaching a large automatic door that opened to reveal a giant swimming pool surrounded by sun lounges and facing the ocean. Shielding his eyes briefly, he spotted his mother and Mr Mime lying under an umbrella, drinking juice. Smiling, he walked over to them.
"Hey Mum," Ash called, when he was close enough.
Delia looked at him before sitting up properly. "Ash, are you having a good time?"
"Yes, I sketched a Sharpedo," Ash smiled, pulling out his book to show her his newest drawing. "And I managed to get lots of pictures of different Pokémon."
"It's wonderful," Delia smiled as she admired the picture. "Tracey would be proud of what you've learnt."
"I'm grateful for Tracey," Ash said as he put his book away. "Drawing and pictures help. Mum, do you think I'll be able to touch Pokémon again?"
"I believe you will," Delia smiled, standing before kissing his cheek. "You just need time. Speaking of time, we have to get the egg to the Pokémon school. Would you like to carry it?"
Ash bit his lip as he looked at the container sitting on the sun lounge next to Delia. The container was holding the egg that Professor Oak had asked Delia and Ash to deliver. He took a shuddering breath.
"I'll try," Ash said before reaching his hand out.
Delia smiled patiently as she watched Ash slowly approach the egg. He was about to touch it when in his mind, he saw himself dropping the egg and killing the innocent baby Pokémon inside. He jumped back in horror and started to breathe heavily.
"No, no, no," Delia said, quickly pulling Ash into her arms and rubbing his back. "It's okay. It's okay. You didn't break it. It's okay."
"Mime, mime," Mr Mime said as he reached out a hand to touch Ash, only to quickly pull back when he remembered Ash's anxiety.
"Pika, pika," Pikachu cooed, patting Ash's head so he would calm down.
"Excuse me," Ash heard a female voice say. "Are you alright?"
"Oh yes," Delia was saying. "It's okay. He just needs a little time. Ash, sweetheart, it's alright. Remember your breathing; in and out. Shh."
As Delia hummed and stroked his hair, Ash slowly started to relax, breathing deeply.
"I'm sorry," he whimpered.
"It's okay, sweetheart," Delia smiled. "Thank you for caring, dears."
Ash turned his head to see a blonde boy wearing black trousers with a matching hoodie and a blonde girl wearing a white frock with a matching sunhat looking at him in concern. He went red with embarrassment. Fantastic; he went and had a panic attack in front of two strangers about his age.
"Do you need any help?" the girl asked. "Berries, water?"
"Directions would be nice," Delia smiled, letting go of Ash and picking up her bag while Mr Mime picked up the egg container. "We've been asked to take this egg to the Pokémon School. Do you know where it is?"
"Yes," the girl smiled. "We're students there. We'll happily take you. Snowy, Umbreon?"
An Umbreon and a white fluffy Pokémon ran up to the girl and boy, beaming brightly. Ash looked at the two in amazement, especially the white one. It looked like the Vulpix in the Kanto region but it was white instead of red.
"Wow," Ash breathed. "I've never seen a white Vulpix before. The Vulpix in Kanto are red."
"Really?" the boy asked in amazement. "Vulpix in Alola are ice types."
"Cool," Ash smiled. "May I take a picture, please? And your Umbreon too?"
The girl and the boy nodded. Ash smiled gratefully before kneeling to take a few pictures of the beautiful Pokémon, chuckling as they did some poses.
"You like them?" he asked, turning the camera around to show the screen that held the pictures.
"Wow," the girl beamed. "They’re beautiful. You're as good as our mother at taking pictures. Are you a Pokémon photographer?"
Ash shook his head as he let the camera fall against his chest. "No, it's just a way for me to be with them without freaking out," he answered before wincing in embarrassment. "I'm sorry, I haven't introduced us. My name is Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town in the Kanto region. This is my mum; Delia, Mr Mime and my partner Pikachu."
"Pikachu!" Pikachu waved happily from Ash's shoulder.
"Mime, mime," Mr Mime waved.
"Lovely to meet you," the girl smiled as she picked up her Vulpix. "My name is Lillie. This is my partner, Snowy. And, this is my older brother Gladion and his Umbreon."
"It's nice to meet you," Gladion smiled kindly before he turned serious. "If you don't mind my asking, what did you mean by 'being near Pokémon without freaking out?'"
"I can't touch any Pokémon except Pikachu," Ash admitted sadly.
Lillie and Gladion looked at each other in surprise. Not able to touch Pokémon?
"We're sorry to hear that," Lillie said while Gladion nodded in agreement.
Ash shook his head to wave off the apology. "It’s okay. So, which way do we go to get to the Pokémon School?"
"Follow us," Gladion offered. "We'll take you."
***
Ash silently stared out the window of the Aether town car, watching the people and Pokémon walk around as the car driver drove them towards the school. Meanwhile, Lillie and Gladion talked about Umbreon, Snowy and their mother while Pikachu and Mr Mime happily talked to their new friends. As everyone spoke, Gladion couldn't tear his eyes from Ash. He seemed to have a faraway, dreamy look on his face, full of wonder about his surroundings and the Pokémon but at the same time, he had a look of longing and sadness in his eyes.
"So, are you visiting Alola for a holiday or something?" he asked, hoping to get some sort of interaction from Ash.
"Mimey won this holiday for us," Delia smiled while Mr Mime blushed. "So, we thought we'd come and experience a new region. We told Professor Oak and he asked us to bring the egg to Alola."
"You know Professor Oak?" Lillie asked in amazement.
"He's known Ash since he was a baby," Delia smiled. "Isn't that right, Ash?"
Ash didn't answer. He just kept staring out the window.
"Ash," Delia scolded. "You're being rude."
"What?" Ash said suddenly. He blinked as if remembering where he was and blushed. "I'm sorry, I just can't believe how bright and beautiful Alola is. And so many Pokémon."
Lillie and Gladion smiled.
"You really love Pokémon, don't you?" Gladion asked.
"Very much," Ash smiled shyly as he hugged Pikachu.
"Excuse me, Master Gladion and Miss Lillie," the driver said. "We have arrived."
"Thank you," Lillie and Gladion said together as the car pulled to a stop.
Gladion opened the door and stepped out, moving to the side so Lillie, Ash, Delia and Mr Mime could follow. After stepping out, Ash looked around in amazement. The school appeared to be made up of three giant wooden buildings with thatched roofs, dozens of windows and connecting skybridges while the grounds were open and filled with children and Pokémon. It just seemed warm and welcoming. Pikachu jumped off his shoulder and looked around too, his face lit up with joy.
"It's so big," Ash breathed as he started walking forward without thinking.
"Look out!" Someone suddenly yelled.
Ash looked up to see that a Charizard was about to land close to him. Ash froze, his face filled with panic. Without thinking, Gladion stepped forward and grabbed Ash's arm before stepping backwards, pulling Ash into his arms. Panting and shaking, Ash grabbed Gladion's hoodie and buried his face into it as Gladion wrapped his arms around Ash's back.
"Pikachu!" Pikachu cried out in alarm, running over and patting Ash's leg.
"Ash, dear are you alright?" Delia asked.
Ash didn't answer. He lifted his head from Gladion's shoulder and looked at him, taking in all his features. Gladion's eyes were wide and his cheeks were scarlet. His eyes were bright peridot green and he had long eyelashes. Ash noticed that Gladion had long bangs covering his right eye and he had two silver piercings in his right ear.
He's beautiful, Ash thought, feeling his own cheeks colour.
"Are you okay?" Gladion asked, slowly releasing Ash.
"Yeah, I'm okay," Ash said as he loosened his grip on Gladion's hoodie. He then turned to see a shirtless dark-skinned boy with red and black hair dismounting Charizard with a guilty look on his face.
"Sorry about that," he winced. "You kind of came out of nowhere."
"I'm sorry," Ash blushed. "I guess I was distracted."
"Alola Kiawe," Lillie smiled.
"Alola Lillie and Gladion," Kiawe smiled. "Who's this?"
"Hey!" Another voice called.
Everyone looked to see a blue-haired girl, a green-haired girl and a short boy with orange hair jogging up to them. Each of them was carrying a different type of Pokémon.
"Is everything okay, Kiawe?" The girl with green hair asked. "Oh Alola, Lillie and Gladion!"
"Alola!" The other girl and the boy beamed together.
"Alola!" Lillie and Gladion smiled.
"Who's this?" The boy asked.
"I saw him on the beach yesterday," the blue-haired girl said. "He was drawing something."
Ash blushed as he picked up Pikachu and hugged him to his chest, feeling a little overwhelmed by the attention he was getting.
"Pikachu," Pikachu said in concern.
"Are you okay?" Lillie asked.
Ash nodded, closing his eyes as he tried to remember how Gladion's arms felt around it. He had felt safe in Gladion's arms; for the first time since the Kalos League, he felt safe. Taking a deep breath, he smiled and opened his eyes.
"I'm sorry for worrying you," Ash apologised, bowing. "I'm Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town in the Kanto region. And this is my best friend Pikachu."
"Pikachu!" Pikachu happily waved.
"This is my mum Delia and Mr Mime," Ash continued, gesturing to his mother and the psychic and fairy-type Pokémon.
"Nice to meet you," the green-haired girl beamed. "I'm Mallow and this is Bounsweet."
"Bounsweet," the little berry-looking Pokémon greeted as she bounced on Mallow's shoulder.
"I'm Lana," the blue-haired girl smiled, holding out her blue seal-like Pokémon. "And this is Poppilo."
"Pop, pop, pop," Poppilo cheered, clapping her fins together.
"My name is Sophocles," the boy nodded, holding up a round Pokémon with spikes. "And this is Togedemaru."
"Toge," Togedemaru smiled, waving a little hand.
"And I'm Kiawe," Kiawe smiled as he returned Charizard to his Pokéball.
"It's lovely to meet you all," Delia smiled. "I don't mean to be rude but where can I find Principal Oak's office? We need to give him this egg."
"We'll take you," Mallow grinned. "Just follow us."
As everyone walked, they told Ash about the four islands, the Island Guardians and the Island Grand Trials where people could participate and get a Z-ring to perform powerful moves with their Pokémon. Ash listened in amazement while turning and walking at the same time, trying to take in everything he was seeing and hearing. Gladion couldn't help but smile at Ash's wonder. He thought it was really cute.
"Incredible," Ash breathed. "Alola is amazing."
"The Pokémon School lets us learn alongside Pokémon," Mallow smiled as she led Ash and Delia up some stairs. At the top of the staircase were some Pokémon fossil skeletons.
"Wow." Ash lifted his camera to take pictures. "They're in near-perfect condition. Gary would love these."
"Who's Gary?" Gladion asked, surprised that he was feeling a little envious over someone he had never heard of.
"Gary Oak," Delia smiled. "Professor Oak's grandson. He and Ash have been friends since they were babies."
"He's currently living in the Sinnoh region, trying to restore Pokémon fossils," Ash explained as he gently placed his camera against his chest. "These will help."
"Come on," Mallow called. "We're almost at the principal's office."
The group kept walking until Mallow stopped in front of a door and started to knock.
"Principal Oak?" Mallow called. "There's someone here to see you."
The door opened to reveal a man who looked similar to Professor Oak, only with darker skin and long hair.
"Hello there, you must be Ash and Delia," he smiled. "My cousin told me you'd be coming. Welcome to the Pokémon School, home of Solrock and roll!"
Delia and Mr Mime giggled while Ash looked confused.
"I'm sorry?"
"Principal Oak likes to make jokes with Pokémon names," Mallow explained in embarrassment.
"Oh," Ash smiled politely.
"Please come in," Principal Oak smiled. "I'll call my cousin and tell him you made the delivery, Lickilicky split!"
Everyone groaned as they followed the principal inside his office, where he turned on a video phone on a large screen.
"Hello cousin," Principal Oak said as the screen showed Professor Oak's face. "The egg has arrived safe and sound."
"Wonderful," Professor Oak beamed. "Thank you very much, Delia."
"My pleasure," Delia smiled.
"And Ash, Tracey wants to know how your drawings are going," Professor Oak informed him
"Fine sir," Ash answered. "I've managed to draw quite a few Pokémon and I've gotten lots of pictures."
"Wonderful," Professor Oak smiled. "I look forward to seeing them upon your return. Good day, everyone."
"Principal Oak," Mallow said as Professor Oak hung up. "May we show Ash around our school?"
"Of course, Beedrill on your way!"
Everyone rolled their eyes before leading Ash out of the office and down the halls, pointing out the different rooms until they had reached their classroom.
"This is our classroom," Lillie smiled. "Our teacher is Professor Kukui."
Ash looked around silently until he saw the balcony. He walked forward and stared out at the view. It was breathtaking. Smiling, Ash closed his eyes and stretched his arms out like wings, imagining himself flying on the wind currents as he breathed in the ocean air before opening his eyes and looking down. He sighed sadly as he watched everyone play with Pokémon. How he would love to come here and learn about the Pokémon in Alola but he knew it wasn't possible. How could he learn when he could barely interact with Pokémon? He turned around, blinking when he saw everyone looking at him with concern.
"What?" Ash asked.
"You're crying," Lana said.
Frowning, Ash touched his cheeks. They were wet.
"Sorry," he grimaced, wiping his face. "I'm fine."
Bounsweet frowned before jumping up and down on Mallow's shoulder, releasing a sweet, fruity scent from her leaves. Ash smiled as he and Pikachu inhaled.
"Smells like berries," Ash smiled. "Very different from my Bayleef's Sweet Scent."
"Bayleef?" Gladion asked curiously.
Ash looked at Pikachu and nodded.
"Pika," Pikachu saluted before turning around and pulling a book out of Ash's bag.
"Thanks, buddy," Ash smiled as he took the book. After opening it and turning a few pages, Ash flipped the book around to reveal a drawing he had done of Bayleef as well as a few photos of the Pokémon.
"This is my Bayleef," he explained. "I got her in the Johto region."
"Really? How many regions have you been to?" Lillie asked in amazement.
"This is the sixth region I've visited," Ash said. "When I first became a trainer, I travelled through the Kanto region. Afterwards, I travelled through the Orange Islands, filled by Johto, then Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos last year."
Everyone stared at him in astonishment.
“How old are you?” Lana asked.
“Seventeen,” Ash answered.
"Do you have lots of Pokémon?" Kiawe asked.
Ash nodded shyly.
"May we see?" Sophocles asked hopefully.
Ash bit his lip as he took in the hopeful looks of everyone before looking at Pikachu.
"Pika!" Pikachu said, nodding eagerly. "Pika! Pikachu!"
"Okay," Ash said as he sat on the ground and crossed his legs.
Everyone eagerly copied him and listened as Ash showed them the different pictures of his Pokémon, occasionally pointing out which ones he could see in Alola. Suddenly, they heard a knock. Everyone looked up to see a man wearing baggy grey trousers and a lab coat approaching them. Quickly, everyone stood up while Ash put his book on the floor.
"Alola," the man smiled kindly. "What are you kids doing?"
"Ash is showing us pictures of his Pokémon," Lillie beamed. "Ash, this is our teacher, Professor Kukui."
"It's nice to meet you, sir," Ash said politely, bowing his head.
"You too Ash," Kukui smiled. "I just met your mother in Principal Oak's office. So, what do you think of the Pokémon school?"
"It's awesome," Ash admitted.
"I'm glad you think so," Kukui smiled. "Do you think you'd like to attend?"
Ash's eyes widened while everyone looked hopeful. Gladion felt his stomach flip. Ash could attend school? That would mean he would stay longer and Gladion could be with him. Wait, what? Where'd that thought come from?
"Attend?" Ash asked in shock. "You mean, be a student? I'm sorry; I can't."
"Why not?" Kukui asked kindly. "You'll have a wonderful time learning about Alola and the Pokémon that live here. Also, you've made some new friends already."
"Sir, that's very kind of you," Ash said as politely as he could. "But I wouldn't be a good student. I can't touch Pokémon and I can't battle. I'm no longer a trainer. I'm not a good fit here. I'll just let you and everyone else down."
"You really believe that?" Kukui asked in surprise.
"Sir, it's the truth," Ash admitted sadly before grabbing his bag. "I should go. It was wonderful meeting all of you and Lillie, Gladion, thank you for earlier. Goodbye."
As Ash quickly ran out of the room to find his mother, Pikachu gave everyone a sad look from Ash's shoulder. Everyone stared at Ash in shock before looking at each other sadly. Gladion then quickly walked over to the balcony just in time to see Ash, Delia and Mr Mime walk out of the schoolyard. Ash had his head down but his shoulders were shaking like he was crying. Gladion's heart ached for him as he stepped away from the balcony, accidentally stepping on Ash's sketchbook. Smiling sadly, Gladion picked up the book and hugged it to his chest. He knew he should find Ash and return it but right now, holding the book almost felt like he was holding and comforting Ash.

Later that night in a restaurant, Ash picked at his food, not enjoying himself. He couldn't stop thinking about the Pokémon school, the new friends he had made and Gladion. He just couldn't stop thinking about Gladion.
"Are you okay Ash?" Delia asked kindly.
"I will be," he said, trying to force a smile.
Delia sighed. "Ash, don't hide your feelings with a fake smile," she told him before giving him a knowing look. “You want to stay, don't you?"
Ash shrugged.
"You know, Professor Kukui gave me a call before dinner," Delia admitted. "He said you're still welcome to join the Pokémon school and he'll be more than happy to provide lodging for you."
"Lodging? But mum, what about my anxiety or my nightmares?" Ash asked.
"Don’t you think that maybe this is what you need to help with your anxiety?" Delia pointed out. "I told Professor Kukui and Principal Oak everything about your anxiety. They said they'd be happy to help you. Also, Professor Kukui knows about your nightmares. He's still happy to provide lodging for you. But remember this Ash, they can only help you if you let them."
Ash looked at Delia, thinking of her words. She had a point but Ash still felt scared. He didn’t want to be burned again. Delia smiled.
"Why don't you and Pikachu go for a walk?" She suggested. "Get some fresh air and give what I said some thought. Just make sure you don't stay out too late."
Ash nodded before standing up. "Okay, mum. I won't go far."
He started to walk along the empty paths, enjoying the quiet atmosphere. As he walked, he thought about the school again and the new people he met.
"The Pokémon school is amazing, isn't it, Pikachu?" he asked softly.
Pikachu nodded.
"Do you want to go to school?"
Pikachu was about to nod again when he noticed something floating around in the distance.
"Pika?" Pikachu said in surprise before leaping off Ash's shoulder and running off. “Pika!”
"Pikachu?" Ash called in confusion. "Hey Piakchu! Come back!"
***
At Mallow's Family Restaurant, Lillie and Gladion had just finished telling their mother about what their day had been like.
"This Ash sounds interesting," Lusamine smiled after taking a sip of tea. "So, he's afraid to touch Pokémon?"
"To the point where he almost had a panic attack being close to Kiawe's Charizard," Lillie told her. "I wonder what could have happened to him."
"Well, thinking about it," Lusamine said thoughtfully. "He might have gone through something traumatic."
"Something traumatic?" Gladion asked, thinking about Ash’s behaviour.
Lusamine shrugged. "It's possible.”
Gladion hummed, looking out the window in time to see Pikachu running past with Ash following. He blinked in surprise before standing.
"I'm sorry Mother, Lillie," Gladion apologised. "Please excuse me. Umbreon, come with me."
"Bre!" Umbreon nodded
Ignoring his mother's and sister's protests, Gladion ran out of the restaurant and started to run after Ash, followed closely by Umbreon.
"Ash! Wait!" He called as he ran.
But Ash didn't; he just kept running until he reached a staircase.
"Pikachu!" Ash called while panting. "Where are you going?"
"Pikachu!" Pikachu called from the top.
Ash sighed before running up the steps while Gladion followed.
Wow, this guy can run, he thought as he ran up the steps.
When he had reached the top, he braced himself against his knees to catch his breath before raising his head. He saw Ash standing near the edge of the viewpoint that overlooked Melemele Island, completely frozen as he stared at the sky. Gladion followed Ash’s gaze, gasping when he saw Tapu Koko, Melemele’s Island Guardian floating a metre above Ash.
"Ash!" Gladion called, running towards Ash, who still hadn't moved.
As Gladion got closer, he saw that Ash seemed to be having some sort of internal battle. He looked like he was torn between being amazed by the sight of the Island Guardian and hiding in fear.
"Ash," Gladion said softly, stepping in front of him and placing his hands upon Ash's shoulders.
Ash blinked as his eyes met Gladion's. "Gladion?" He whispered.
"It's okay, Ash," Gladion smiled kindly. "You don't have to be afraid. That's Tapu Koko, the guardian of Melemele. It's not going to hurt you."
"I know it won't hurt me," Ash said sadly, looking up at Tapu Koko again. "I'm scared I'm going to hurt it."
Gladion was confused. Ash was scared that he was going to hurt Tapu Koko?
“What? What do you mean?” he asked.
"I hurt Pokémon, Gladion." Ash started to cry. "I'm toxic. Every Pokémon I meet gets hurt because of me. I shouldn't be near Pokémon. I shouldn't even be near Pikachu."
"Pikapi, pi." Pikachu shook his head sadly as he hugged Ash's leg.
Gladion looked at Ash in shock before pulling him into a hug. Ash gasped in surprise before leaning heavily against Gladion, weeping as he gripped Gladion's hoodie again. Slowly, Umbreon approached Ash and started to nuzzle his leg but Ash was so busy crying, he didn't notice. After a few minutes of sobbing, Ash took a few shuddering breaths to calm down as he relaxed in Gladion's arms. They felt so warm and safe.
"I don't believe you're not toxic, Ash," Gladion told him, gently rubbing on the back of Ash's neck with his fingers. “I mean, look down."
Ash lifted his head off Gladion's shoulder and looked down to see Umbreon rubbing against him happily. He jumped and backed away, leaving the safety of Gladion’s arms.
"No, don't!" he cried, more tears falling. "I'll end up hurting you!"
Umbreon gave Ash a sad look.
"Ash, you're not going to hurt Umbreon," Gladion smiled as he stepped towards Ash and placed his hands upon Ash's cheeks, wiping away the tears with his thumbs.
Ash gave Gladion a funny look. "Why do you think that? You don't know me. I mean, we only met today."
"Maybe," Gladion shrugged, moving his hands from Ash's face to his shoulders. "But from what I learnt about you today, you're far too kind to hurt Pokémon."
"Koko!" Tapu Koko cried as it flew closer to the boys.
Ash and Gladion looked up in time to see Tapu Koko drop something towards Ash. Ash lifted his hand and caught the item before looking at it. It looked like a chunky, silver metal bracelet.
"What's this?" He asked. "Some sort of bracelet?"
"That's a Z-ring," Gladion said in amazement. "I have one too."
Gladion held up his arm to show the Z-ring on his wrist, except his was red and appeared to be made of leather. Ash's eyes widened, remembering what Kiawe had said about Z-rings and Island Challenges.
"But why give me one?" Ash asked in confusion.
He stepped back, resulting in Gladion's hands falling off his shoulders, and walked over to the railing surrounding the overlook, placing the Z-ring on the square wooden rail carefully before stepping back and looking up at Tapu Koko.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm not a trainer anymore. I can't battle. You should give this to someone else. Someone more worthy."
Tapu Koko shook its head and gestured to the Z-ring.
"It wants you to have it," Gladion smiled, stepping forward and picking up the Z-ring.
Ash sighed. "I can't touch Pokémon, Gladion. I can't battle. Not anymore."
"Then I'll help you," Gladion told him, reaching out his hand. "I'll help you face your fears and I'll help you become a trainer again. Please, Ash. Come to school and let me help you heal."
Ash looked at Gladion, his eyes shifting from Gladion's eyes to his outstretched hand and back again. His heart raced.
Should I? He thought.
"Pikapi!" Pikachu cried, jumping up and down in excitement. "Pika! Pika!"
"Umbre!" Umbreon nodded in agreement.
Ash looked at Pikachu and Umbreon before looking back at Gladion. Slowly, he lifted his hand and placed it in Gladion's.
"Okay," he whispered.
Gladion smiled as he gently slipped the Z-ring over Ash's hand and onto his wrist. The Z-ring glowed brightly for a minute but neither of the boys noticed. They just kept staring at each other. Tapu Koko smiled approvingly as it bid Pikachu and Umbreon goodbye before flying away.
***
"Professor Kukui's house is lovely, Mum," Ash happily told Delia over the videophone. "It's on the beach so I can take lots of pictures of Pokémon and there's a gym downstairs so Pikachu and I can do workouts."
"That's wonderful Ash," Delia smiled. "Who's that behind you?"
Ash looked behind him to see a fuzzy canine Pokémon happily nuzzling Pikachu, who squealed with delight.
"That's Rockruff," Ash smiled. "He's quite fond of Pikachu. According to Pikachu, he gives the best hugs too."
"What a sweet Pokémon," Delia beamed. "Have you touched him yet?"
Ash shook his head. "No, but Rockruff seems to understand that I can't touch him. I guess that's why Pikachu is giving Rockruff lots of hugs. Hey mum, thanks again for letting me stay."
"I already knew you wanted to stay, sweetheart," Delia told him. "I'm just glad you decided to."
"Really?" Ash asked in surprise.
"I believe this is what you need to heal," she smiled. "Look after yourself, dear."
"Thanks, mum," Ash smiled before looking at the clock. "I have to go. Today's my first day of school."
"Have a good day, sweetheart. I’ll call you later," Delia smiled before hanging up.
"You ready, Ash?" Professor Kukui asked as he walked up the steps from the basement.
"Yes sir," Ash nodded, grabbed his bag, which was sitting on the coffee table.
"No need for that," Kukui smiled kindly. "Professor or Kukui is fine."
"Okay, Professor," Ash nodded as Pikachu took his place on Ash's shoulder.
"Then let's be on our way," Kukui smiled. "See you later, Rockruff!"
***
At the school, everyone was talking among themselves in excitement over the fact that Ash was attending school.
"I'm so glad he changed his mind!" Mallow cheered. "It's so cool to make a new friend. Hey, maybe he'll draw our Pokémon. What do you think, Bounsweet?"
"Bounsweet!" Bounsweet agreed happily.
"I wonder what made him change his mind?" Sophocles asked as he fiddled with the current program he was running on his laptop.
"Maybe he just needed the right reason," Lillie smiled, giving Gladion a sly smile.
Gladion blushed and looked away, flipping through the sketchbook Ash had left behind. The other night after Gladion had returned to the restaurant, Lillie had demanded to know where he had gone. Despite not wanting to, Gladion had told her with great reluctance that he had seen Ash run after Pikachu and had gone to help him. He left out the part on how Tapu Koko had given Ash a Z-ring and how he had promised to help Ash with his fear of touching Pokémon. He especially left out the moment he had shared with Ash on the overlook.
"Alola!" Kukui smiled as he walked into the class, Ash following close behind him with Pikachu on his shoulder.
Everyone lit up at the sight of Ash, although Kiawe's eyes immediately zeroed in on the Z-ring shining on Ash's wrist.
"Alola," Ash said politely.
"Starting today, Ash will be a student of the Pokémon School," Kukui smiled. "So please, make sure you extend a Helping Hand if he needs help."
"I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and learning more about Alola," Ash smiled while Pikachu cheered.
"We're glad that you've decided to join our school," Lana smiled. "We loved hearing stories about your Pokémon and where you've been."
"And I'm looking forward to getting to know Pikachu," Sophocles added. "I love electric types."
"And we were hoping that maybe you'd draw some portraits of our Pokémon?" Mallow asked hopefully.
"I'll try," Ash said shyly.
"Speaking of portraits," Lillie smiled. "You left your sketchbook here the other day. My brother has been looking after it."
"Really?" Ash asked hopefully.
Gladion nodded as he stood up and held out the book. Ash smiled and walked towards Gladion. As he grabbed the book, his fingers brushed against Gladion's. The two of them blushed as Ash took the book and held it to his chest.
"Thank you," he said shyly. "I was scared I lost it."
"It's okay," Gladion smiled. "Your drawings are beautiful."
Ash blushed a deeper red while the girls giggled. Before he could respond, Kiawe got out of his chair and approached Ash, gently taking Ash's wrist in his hand so he could examine the Z-ring.
"Where did you get this?" he asked in a stern voice.
Ash bit his lip and tried to back away but Kiawe had a strong hold. Pikachu growled a warning as his cheeks sparked with electricity.
"Kiawe, stop," Gladion snapped. "You're scaring him."
Kiawe blinked and immediately released Ash's arm. "Sorry, Ash.”
"I'm sorry," Ash said fearfully. "Am I not supposed to have this?"
"I'm just wondering where you got it," Kiawe questioned carefully. "You get Z-rings by participating in the Grand Trial. You haven't, so where did you get that Z-ring?"
"Tapu Koko gave it to me," Ash admitted as he looked away.
"Seriously?!" Mallow and Lana squealed. "The Island Guardian of Melemele gave you a Z-ring?!"
"I tried to give it back!" Ash said, anxiety lacing his tone. He wanted to run but he couldn't move.
"Ash, it's okay," Gladion said in a soothing tone, placing a hand on his free shoulder. "Lillie, you know how I chased after Ash the other night?"
"Yeah?" Lillie said.
"When I found him, Tapu Koko was there," Gladion explained. "It wanted Ash to have the Z-ring."
"Seriously?" Lillie asked while everyone stared in amazement. "What was it like? What happened?"
"After Tapu Koko gave it to me, I tried to give it back," Ash admitted as he looked at his Z-ring. "I told it I wasn't a trainer anymore but it insisted I take it. Like it was meant for me or something. And that's what happened."
Everyone except Gladion gasped in amazement.
"You know, Tapu Koko likes to help islanders and give gifts," Lillie said thoughtfully. "But it also loves to play pranks on people."
"I knew it," Ash sighed as he started to pull the Z-ring off his wrist.
"No," Gladion said, grabbing his hands to stop Ash. "Don't do that. Tapu Koko wouldn't pull a prank with something as serious as a Z-ring. It was a gift, not a prank."
"Gladion’s right," Kiawe nodded. "A Z-ring allows you to transfer Z-Power from yourself to your Pokémon to perform a Z-move. Tapu Koko wouldn't have given you something powerful as a prank."
"Really?" Ash asked with uncertainty. "Will you teach me, Kiawe?"
"Teach you?" Kiawe asked in confusion.
"When I got the Z-ring, Gladion said he'll help me become a trainer again," Ash said. "And the way you were talking about Z-rings and Z-moves the other day, you seem to know and understand the meaning behind them. Would you teach me more about them? Please?"
Kiawe studied Ash carefully, unsure of what to say.
"Go on Kiawe," Mallow encouraged. "Your grandfather was the former Island Kahuna of Akala."
"That's true," Sophocles added. "You know everything about Z-rings and Z-moves thanks to him."
"You should teach him, Kiawe," Lana finished.
Kiawe remained quiet for a few minutes as he thought it over before nodding. "Alright, I'll do my best to teach you the responsibilities that come from owning a Z-ring."
"Thank you, Kiawe," Ash smiled gratefully.
As the group spoke, Kukui watched them silently, paying particular attention to the attention Gladion was giving Ash and the way Ash was reacting.
Delia was right, he thought. He's very meek and anxious. But at the same time, he seems calm with Gladion. It looks like some serious Attract is going on between them.
"Okay, everyone," Kukui announced. "It's time for classes. The first is Pokémon regional variants with Principal Oak."
***
Over the next couple of weeks, Ash slowly got to know everyone and their Pokémon, despite not being able to touch them. He had also gotten a Rotom Dex, which helped him learn about the Alolan Pokémon, although the two didn't agree on the way to take pictures of Pokémon. Ash also loved learning about his classmates, like Kiawe and his farm or Mallow and her restaurant. But he was particularly close to Gladion, especially after what had happened during the fieldwork class a few days ago.
Flashback
The class had gone into the forest to find wild Pokémon and hopefully find one for Ash to catch. Despite his reluctance, Ash had agreed, thanks to Gladion's encouragement and promise that he would be by Ash's side. However, Ash's hope turned to horror when he saw that Jessie, James, Meowth and Wobbuffet had arrived in Alola to do the usual Team Rocket quest that they did in every region they were sent to; steal Pokémon with stealing Pikachu as the main priority for them. Also, a Mimikyu, who apparently had a massive grudge against all Pikachu, immediately teamed up with Team Rocket and started to attack Pikachu violently. Ash had frozen in horror as he watched the angry Pokémon attack his best friend, tears falling down his face.
"Stop!" Gladion yelled angrily, flinging a Pokéball, revealing his Midnight form Lycanroc, who growled lowly as he observed the scene before him.
"Stone Edge, now!" Gladion commanded darkly.
Lycanroc howled before punching the ground, activating the move Stone Edge. Pikachu quickly jumped out of the way but Mimikyu didn't, resulting in it being knocked back, hitting the ground hard in front of Jessie. Team Rocket growled in annoyance.
"Stay out of this, dark twerp!" Jessie snapped. "We've been after Pikachu for a long time and now, we'll finally get the praise, rewards and respect we deserve!"
"Not happening!" Gladion snarled as he and Lycanroc stood in front of Ash. "Here we go."
He crossed his arms in front of him, activating his Z-ring while Lycanroc growled.
"The blue moon's Z-power washes over us," Gladion declared as he and Lycanroc started to perform a variety of different moves. "And the crumbling world! Then seals it up...Now!"
Lycanroc howled as the orange Z-power transferred from Gladion to him, engulfing him in light.
"Use Continental Crush!" Gladion yelled as Lycanroc jumped into the air, somehow summoning earth to create a giant boulder in his paw.
Team Rocket watched in fear while everyone except Ash, Pikachu and Rotom smiled. They just stared in amazement at the power before them. Then, with a howl, Lycanroc threw the giant rock down towards Team Rocket, who screamed in fear. As it landed, a bright light filled the land, followed by a large explosion. Team Rocket screamed again as they started to fly away when suddenly a Bewear appeared out of nowhere, grabbing Team Rocket and Mimikyu before disappearing deep into the forest. As everyone continued to stare in confusion, Ash fell to his knees, crying as he held Pikachu to his chest.
"Ash!" Gladion cried in alarm as he turned around and kneeled in front of Ash, gently placing his hands upon Ash's shoulders. "Ash? Are you alright?"
"I'm sorry," Ash whimpered. "I'm so sorry, Pikachu."
Gladion slowly pulled Ash into him and held him as tight as he could. "Shh, it's okay. It's going to be okay. I'm here for you Ash. I promise."
End of flashback
Ash smiled softly at the memory of Gladion's comfort as he worked on his sketch of Lycanroc and Rockruff, who were both sitting in front of him patiently. It was currently breaktime so Ash was taking the opportunity to draw while Gladion and Kiawe were training with Pikachu and their partners Turtonator and Umbreon. Ash smiled as he watched his friends train, but his eyes kept drifting to Gladion. He really liked Gladion. He was very patient and never pushed him into anything he was uncomfortable with, which was something Ash was very grateful for. He was just… wonderful. Ash then blinked when he heard a bark. He looked at Rockruff and Lycanroc, who were both itching to move after sitting still for a while.
"Sorry, I'm almost finished," Ash smiled, grabbing two Pokémon treats out of his bag next to him and gently tossing them towards the two canine Pokémon.
Rockruff barked happily as he caught the treat in his mouth, sighing at the delicious taste while Lycanroc grunted his thanks as he caught the treat in his paw before putting it in his mouth. Ash grinned as he added the final colours.
"Done," he smiled, putting down his pencil before holding up the book. "What do you two think?"
Rockruff beamed while Lycanroc nodded approvingly.
"I'm glad," Ash smiled, tossing them two more treats. "Sorry I took so long. Thanks for being so patient."
Rockruff and Lycanroc nodded before the two began running around; Rockruff playfully chasing his evolved form. Ash smiled as he watched them before turning his attention back to Gladion, smiling as Gladion helped Pikachu with his speed along with Umbreon. He then looked over at Ash before smiling and waving. Ash waved back, feeling warm and fuzzy.
What am I feeling? He thought. Why do I feel like I have Butterfree in my stomach whenever he looks at me or touches me?
"Hey Ash," Lillie and Mallow beamed as they sat on either side of him along with Lana and Sophocles, startling him out of his thoughts.
"Sorry, we didn't mean to startle you," Lillie smiled in an apologetic tone. "We just wanted to see what you drew."
"It's okay," Ash smiled as he handed his book to Lillie.
Lillie and Mallow eagerly flipped through the book, looking at the pictures he had drawn since he had started school.
"These are amazing!" Mallow beamed. "Right, Bounsweet?"
"Bounsweet!" Bounsweet agreed.
"You're good at drawing, Ash," Lana praised.
"Thanks," Ash said as he continued to watch Gladion, not paying attention to everyone else.
Lillie followed his gaze before lighting up in delight at the look on Ash's face.
"Hey Ash, I have an idea," she grinned.
"What is it?" Ash asked.
"One moment, Big Brother! Kiawe!" Lillie called.
Kiawe and Gladion looked up when they heard their names and walked over.
"Is everything okay?" Kiawe asked.
"Oh yes, I just wanted to make sure you both heard this," Lillie smiled. "Ash, seeing how today is Friday and we have no homework, why don't we have a sleepover? We can hang out more and you can see lots of wild Pokémon in the garden. Maybe you might catch one!"
Ash blinked before his face filled with worry. "I don't know. I'm not exactly the best person for a sleepover."
"Really?" Lillie asked in surprise. "I'm sure you'll be okay."
"It's not sleeping over at someone else's house that's the problem," Ash explained. "I get really bad nightmares and sometimes wake up screaming. I don't want to disturb you all."
"You won't disturb us," Mallow reassured him. "We'll help you if you're scared."
"Really?" Ash asked.
Everyone nodded and smiled while Gladion leaned towards his ear.
"I'll keep the nightmares away," he whispered.
Ash looked down as he felt his cheeks heat up. A sleepover with his new friends did sound like fun.
"Okay," he smiled shyly. "I guess a sleepover will be fun."
***
Ash and Pikachu knocked on the door of the Aether Estate before looking around in wonder. The mansion was massive, almost like a tiny palace.
"You had that same look of wonder on your face when we took you to the school for the first time," a voice said.
Ash turned to see Gladion standing in the doorway smiling. He blushed.
“Sorry.”
Gladion shook his head with a smile, waving off the apology before stepping to the side.
"Come in." He gestured for Ash to come inside. "Lillie's setting up the living room for everyone."
"Okay." Ash walked inside and removed his shoes so he wouldn't track dirt on the tiles.
As he followed Gladion, he couldn't help but look around. The mansion was elegant and grand; so different from the relaxing environment of Professor Kukui’s house or the charming coziness of his home back in Pallet Town.
"You have a lovely house," Ash said awkwardly.
"Thanks, although it sometimes feels really big and empty," Gladion admitted. "I guess that's why Lillie throws sleepovers. To make this place feel fuller."
"Oh," Ash said. "May I ask where your parents are?"
"Mother owns and works at a research facility," Gladion explained. "And father died when I was younger."
"I'm sorry," Ash said sympathetically. "My dad left when I was younger. I don't remember much about him. Just that he was a trainer and loved Pokémon."
"Sorry to hear that," Gladion gave a sympathetic smile. "Anyway, here's where we'll be sleeping."
He opened the door to reveal a large living room where Lillie and a tall, elderly man in a uniform were setting up the room to make it more appropriate for a sleepover.
"Hi, Ash and Pikachu." Lillie waved as the boys walked inside. "This is Hobbes."
"A pleasure," the man bowed. "I work as a butler for the Aether Estate. Miss Lillie and Master Gladion have told me lots about you."
"It's nice to meet you too," Ash said shyly, putting his sleeping bag and backpack down in a corner.
"Oh Ash, there's a playground for Pokémon in our backyard,” Lillie told him. “Maybe Pikachu would like to play there."
"What do you think, buddy?" Ash asked, looking at the electric mouse.
"Pika!" Pikachu nodded in excitement, his eyes glowing.
“Sounds like fun,” Ash translated.
"Wonderful! Why don't you take Ash outside, Gladion?" Lillie suggested. "I'll keep setting up."
"We’ll help you first, Lillie," Gladion said while Ash nodded.
"No need," Lillie smiled, waving her hand. "I'm almost done and Mallow will be here soon. Go play in the garden."
"Okay.” Gladion rolled his eyes with an exasperated sigh before walking to the door they came through, pausing briefly to look at Ash. "Follow me, Ash."
Ash and Pikachu followed Gladion out the door, down a large hallway and out some large patio doors. Ash and Pikachu gasped at the sight of a large playground, filled with different types of Pokémon playing.
"Pika! Pika!" Pikachu squealed in excitement.
Ash smiled as he pulled Pikachu off his shoulder and placed him on the ground.
"Have fun, Pikachu," he encouraged.
Pikachu squealed again before running towards the playground, happily greeting the Pokémon as he ran.
"Here Ash," Gladion smiled, gesturing to an outside table and chairs beside them. "We can sit here and watch if you want."
Ash nodded and sat in one of the chairs while Gladion took another. They quietly watched Pikachu play, smiling at the joyful squeals and cheers.
"Where are your Pokémon?" Ash asked curiously.
"Sleeping in my room," Gladion answered before looking at Ash. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Why are you afraid to touch Pokémon?"
Ash froze before looking at the ground. "I'm...I'm...." He then bit his lip before looking behind him, making sure no one else could hear them. "Can we go someplace where we won't be disturbed?"
"Sure, we'll go to my room," Gladion said, pointing to a balcony above them covered in vines. "It overlooks the playground and Pikachu can easily get to us when he's finished playing."
Ash nodded before looking for Pikachu, finding him as he slid down the slide again. "Hey Pikachu," he called, catching his partner’s attention. "I'm going with Gladion to his room to talk. You can keep playing if you want to but we'll just be up there."
Pikachu looked to where Ash was pointing and nodded before going back to playing. Ash smiled as he stood up and followed Gladion inside. After walking up some stairs and past some doors, Gladion stopped in front of one and opened it, revealing a simple bedroom. Umbreon and Lycanroc woke up and smiled at their trainer.
"Come in and sit down," Gladion invited, walking into the room while gesturing to Ash to follow. "Would you prefer it if it were just us?"
Ash nodded shyly, walking inside.
"Why don't you two play in the garden?" Gladion suggested to Umbreon and Lycanroc.
The two nodded and stretched before walking out of the room. After they left, Gladion closed the door and turned to look at Ash, who was perched gingerly on the edge of his bed. Gladion smiled as he climbed onto his bed, crawling into the middle before sitting with his legs crossed while leaning back on his hands.
"You can come closer, Ash," he invited. "Sitting in the middle is more comfortable than on the edge."
Ash blushed, moving closer until he was sitting next to Gladion. He then brought his knees to his chest so he could hug his legs. The two sat silently as Gladion waited to see if Ash would answer his question. Then Ash sighed heavily.
"I love Pokémon, Gladion," he said. "And I have since I was little. When I finally became a Pokémon Trainer, it was one of the greatest days of my life. After that, I travelled through so many regions, met so many people and Pokémon, made so many friends and participated in so many battles; regular, gym and the Pokémon Leagues. The last place I visited was the Kalos region. Something...happened."
"What?" Gladion asked softly.
"After the Kalos Pokémon League, someone bad got a hold of Zygarde, a legendary Pokémon from Kalos and brainwashed it to try and destroy Kalos. I was working with my friends to try and save Zygarde but I got knocked out. When I woke up, my Pokémon and I were being held hostage and were almost forced to help destroy everything. My Pokémon got hurt because of me. It was my fault. I put them in danger."
Gladion looked at him in horror as Ash started to cry.
"But we managed to break free and fix everything with the help of my friends and the Kalos gym leaders," Ash continued. "I thought I was going to be okay. But a few days after I came home to Pallet, the nightmares started. Soon I wasn't sleeping or eating properly. The less I slept, the more the thoughts and memories swirled in my head. And the more I thought, the less I ate. Eventually, I started remembering all the times my Pokémon had gotten hurt and put in danger. The more I remembered, the more scared I became. Then I started to...see things. My insomnia was causing me to hallucinate to the point where I-.”
Ash choked out a sob, interrupting his sentence. He places his head on his knees, his shoulders shaking from his wails. Gladion moved closer and gently tried to lift Ash's face but he wouldn't budge.
"Ash, look at me," he pleaded with the crying teenager. “Please.”
Sniffing, Ash lifted his head, tears rolling down his cheeks.
"What happened?" Gladion asked gently.
"I hit Pikachu!" Ash sobbed. "I was seeing things and Pikachu tried to comfort me but, in a panic, I hit him! I was so shocked at what I did! How could I hit my best friend?! What kind of monster does that make me?!"
Gladion looked at him in surprise before tugging him into a tight hug, forcing Ash to let go of his legs.
"You're not a monster Ash," he told him. "You were sick. Your body and your mind were traumatised by what had happened in Kalos and you were getting sicker every day you didn't sleep and eat. I know I've only known you for a short time but I know in my heart you would never hurt a Pokémon, especially Pikachu."
Ash held Gladion and sobbed into him like he did the night he met Tapu Koko, all of the anguish and anxiety coming out in heartbreaking sobs. Gladion shut his eyes so he wouldn't start crying as well. The sentence Ash had said that night was starting to make sense now. He was so scared that he no longer touched Pokémon out of fear of hurting them or worse. A few minutes had passed when Ash's loud sobs started to quieten down until he was talking in heaving, shuddering breaths. Slowly, Gladion pushed Ash's shoulders so he could see his eyes. They were red and swollen. Gladion placed his hands on Ash's cheeks, gently wiping the tears away with his thumbs. Ash's eyes closed as his breathing slowly returned to normal.
"What happened next?" Gladion whispered, moving his hands, but leaving one to sit and rest on top of Ash's.
"I must have passed out because the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital," Ash answered. "The doctor said that I had PTSS from the Kalos event as well as other past traumas, which also led to anxiety and depression. The lack of food, sleep and the shock I felt when I hit Pikachu caused me to faint. After I came home from the hospital, I tried to tell Pikachu and all my other Pokémon that they should find new trainers because what I did violated the trust I had between me and my Pokémon. I shouldn't be a trainer anymore because of what I did. But they stuck by me, even though I was so afraid to touch them. Pikachu was especially stubborn, wouldn't leave me alone until I could touch his head without having a panic attack."
Gladion snorted softly. With how Pikachu behaved, he could imagine the adorable electric type following Ash around, stubbornly trying to touch him while Ash tried not to.
"So where do the drawings and photos come in?" he asked.
"After I managed to touch Pikachu, I thought I was fine," Ash admitted, looking at his lap. "I rushed to see everyone and to try and touch them again but along the way, we got attacked by Team Rocket. They had captured my Pokémon and were about to leave. And for the first time in my life as a trainer, I froze. I couldn't move, I couldn't speak. All I could do was stand there, frozen. Luckily, my friend Tracey and Professor Oak were around. They saved my Pokémon. When Professor Oak asked me what happened, I told him I froze. So, Tracey challenged me to a battle to see if I could still battle. I loved battles. They were a way for me to make new friends but for the first time, I was scared to have one. What if one of my Pokémon got hurt or killed? So, I stopped battling and touching Pokémon. But I still wanted to be near them so Tracey taught me how to draw them and take pictures. It wasn't the same but it was enough. A way I could have a relationship with Pokémon and not hurt them."
Gladion kept looking at Ash sadly before leaning his forehead against Ash's temple. Ash stiffened briefly, making Gladion panic, before relaxing, leaning into Gladion’s touch. The two closed their eyes, relishing the warmth of each other.
"Gladion?" Ash asked.
Gladion lifted his head from Ash's temple and opened his eyes. Ash turned his head to look at him.
"Why are you trying to help me?" he asked.
Gladion opened his mouth and then closed it, unsure of what to say.
"I-I don't know," he confessed. "But when I met you and took you to the Pokémon school, you had this look of wonder and delight looking at your surroundings and the Pokémon. But you also looked so sad. I just...wanted to hold you and protect you. I'm sorry, that probably sounds ridiculous."
Ash shook his head with a shy smile before looking at his lap again.
"When you pulled me out of Charizard's way and into your arms, I felt safe,” he admitted, twisting his Z-Ring around his wrist. “For the first time since I left Kalos, I felt so safe and then when you performed that Z-move with Lycanroc to protect me and Pikachu..."
He then sighed before looking up, right into Gladion's eyes.
"I can't get you out of my head," he confessed. "And I'm not sure if I want to."
Gladion smiled as he reached up to stroke Ash's cheek, making him gasp softly.
"I can't get you out of my head either," he admitted. "Would you… like to be in a relationship with me?"
Ash gasped. "I-I don't know. I mean…,” he then sighed. “All I know is that I like you and I feel safe with you.”
“I really like you too,” Gladion told him.
Ash let out a breathless laugh. He couldn't believe it. Gladion liked him.
“How about we take it slow?" Gladion suggested.
“Really?” Ash was surprised. “For how long?”
"As long as you want," Gladion told him. "But right now, may I hold you, please? Just for a little while?"
“Oh-okay,” Ash nodded.
Smiling, Gladion reached behind Ash and grabbed his pillow, placing it behind him before lying on his back.
"Come here, Ash," he invited, holding up his arms. "Lie with me."
Ash swallowed nervously before lying down, resting his head on Gladion's chest while Gladion's arms gently wrapped around his shoulders and back. From his position, Ash could hear the steady thumping of Gladion’s heart, soothing him.
"I can hear your heartbeat," he smiled as he closed his eyes. "It's beautiful. You're beautiful."
Gladion smiled as he started running his fingers through Ash's hair.
"You're beautiful too."
****
Two months later:
Ash was sitting with Gladion, Mallow, Bounsweet, Umbreon and Pikachu at Mallow's family restaurant, eating some fruit while Rotom floated above them.
"You did well today," Gladion told him after drinking some juice. "You've come a long way from when you started at school."
"Thanks," Ash smiled shyly. "You being with me every step has helped."
After the talk they had, Ash had decided to approach everything one step at a time. First was being able to touch his friends' Pokémon. Every day, Ash worked with Gladion to slowly be able to touch each Pokémon without his anxiety getting the best of him. Eventually, Ash had been able to touch Umbreon and Snowy without having a meltdown, much to his joy. After showing Kukui and his classmates how he could hug Umbreon and hold Snowy without having a panic attack, Kukui suggested that maybe Ash should try catching a Pokémon again. Ash felt tears as he remembered how he had tried to catch a bug type with Pikachu, only to freeze after Grubbin had used Dig before surprising Pikachu and biting his foot hard.
"Hey," Gladion said gently when he noticed Ash using his hat to cover his eyes, which was something Ash often did when he was about to cry. "What's wrong?"
"I'm just thinking about the battle," Ash admitted as a tear fell.
Gladion frowned before lifting Ash's chin with his hand before wiping the tear away with his thumb, making Ash smile shyly while Mallow beamed at the interaction. She, Lana and Lillie (especially Lillie) had been so happy when they learnt that Ash and Gladion were trying to figure out if they wanted to be more than friends. As a result, they often watched the two and reported to each other any sweet gestures they made to each other.
"Hey, it's okay, Grubbin can be a bit much anyway,” Gkadion shrugged. “Maybe we should find you a calmer Pokémon to start with."
"Like who?" Ash asked.
"Like a fairy type?" Mallow suggested. "Like a Comfey. Remember Nurse Joy's Comfey? You were a little nervous at first but then you calmed down after it gave you the lei it made."
"Or an Eevee," Gladion smiled as he stroked Umbreon. "Or we could find you a calmer bug type like a Butterfree or Ledyba."
"I'll run a search on calmer Pokémon," Rotom offered. "Then I'll run a search on the most common locations you can find them."
"Thanks, Rotom," Ash smiled. "Thank you too, Gladion and Mallow."
"Maybe a Bounsweet would be perfect for you," Mallow beamed as she cuddled her Bounsweet. "The soothing Sweet Scent would help calm you when you have a panic attack."
"Bounsweet!" Bounsweet said happily, twirling and setting off her sweet, fruity smell, much to Pikachu's and Umbreon's delight.
Ash sighed contentedly as he closed his eyes, inhaling the sweet berry smell when suddenly, he heard a loud, excited hooting noise. He opened his eyes in time to see something brown flying at Bounsweet fast. Annoyed, the fruit Pokémon spun her leaves fast, causing the thing to bounce off her leaves and back into the air like a ball. Everyone blinked in surprise when they saw it was a flying-type Pokémon, which shook off the confusion before flying in a circle in the air.
"Who's that?" Ash asked. "And why would it attack Bounsweet?"
"That's called a Rowlet," Rotom observed before launching into an explanation on what a Rowlet was just as Rowlet flew towards Bounsweet again, who knocked it back again with her spinning leaves.
"It went after Bounsweet because of her Sweet Scent," Mallow smiled. "Flying types love Bounsweet's Sweet Scent so they often go after her because they think she's a berry. She's used to it though. That's why she has that defence."
"It's attacking again!" Rotom warned as Rowlet flew down with a determined trill.
Irritated, Bounsweet spun her leaves, once again sending Rowlet flying backwards.
"Persistent little Pokémon, isn't it?" Gladion smiled while Pikachu and Umbreon rolled their eyes.
Ash cocked his head to the side and hummed. "Maybe it's just hungry," he suggested.
He then stood up and grabbed his plate before walking down the steps and onto the road, checking to make sure no cars or Ride Pokémon were coming. Seeing no one coming, Ash walked to the middle of the road before setting his plate on the ground, not noticing Rowlet had started circling again.
"There," he smiled after walking back and standing at the bottom of the steps. "It should stop going for Bounsweet now."
"I wouldn't be so sure," Gladion warned, pointing up in the air.
Ash looked up to see Rowlet swooping down again. Bounsweet glared at the owl Pokémon as she spun her leaves as fast as she could, this time knocking Rowlet towards Ash. As Rowlet collided with his stomach, Ash cried out in pain as Rowlet knocked him to the ground. The Pokémon then groaned before blacking out.
"Ash, are you alright?" Gladion cried out, running down the steps.
"Ash, we're so sorry," Mallow apologised while Bounsweet looked sad.
"It's okay," Ash wheezed as he sat up with a weak smile. "I'm just a little winded."
"Okay, that's good," Gladion smiled as he kneeled in front of Ash and placed his hands on Ash's shoulder. "Now, look down."
Ash frowned in confusion before looking down, his eyes widened when he saw that he had his arms wrapped around Rowlet. He let out a squeak, feeling the anxiety starting to build up just as Rowlet started whimpering. Ash gasped, suddenly feeling something stronger than his anxiety as Gladion helped him to his feet.
"Mallow, could you get some food please?" Ash asked as he carried Rowlet to the steps and sat down.
Mallow nodded, quickly running inside with Bounsweet while Gladion sat next to Ash.
"Are you alright?" he asked. "You looked like you were about to freak out but then you didn't."
"Yeah," Ash nodded. "I don't know what happened but Rowlet started whimpering and I just wanted it to stop."
Gladion smiled as Ash started running his fingers through Rowlet's feathers. Curious, he started petting the unconscious Pokémon, marvelling at how soft the feathers were.
"It's so soft," Ash smiled just as Rowlet opened its eyes and looked at him. "Hello, are you okay?"
Rowlet did a few sluggish blinks before scratching its beak against Ash's chest.
"That tickles," he giggled while squirming.
Pikachu and Umbreon grinned before walking over to tickle Ash as well. Gladion chuckled as Ash laughed and squirmed. He loved hearing Ash laugh over him crying or screaming.
"Stop, all of you, please!" Ash begged, breathless from laughing. “Too much!”
Pikachu, Umbreon and Rowlet immediately complied with Ash’s wishes just as Mallow walked out with Bounsweet on her shoulder and a large bowl full of melon slices.
"I chopped some melon," she announced as she placed the large bowl on the ground between Ash and Gladion.
Rowlet looked at the bowl and hooted in delight as it jumped from Ash's lap onto the edge of the bowl before gobbling down the melon slices as fast as it could, alternating between pecking off pieces of fruit and swallowing slices whole.
"Wow, you are hungry," Gladion said in awe while the Pokémon gave Rowlet a shocked but amused look.
"I'll get some more," Mallow offered before quickly going inside.
"Hey, slow down and smaller bites," Ash smiled as he stroked Rowlet's back. "You'll give yourself a stomachache."
Rowlet hooted in acknowledgement before slowing down, breaking the melon slices into smaller bites with its beak before swallowing. Ash smiled before walking over to his abandoned plate on the road, grabbing it and walking back.
"Would you like some of this too?" he offered, holding out the plate.
Rowlet looked at Ash and then the plate before eagerly hopping to his forearm, its sharp claws gripping Ash's arm as it gobbled the fruit pieces.
"Are you okay?" Gladion asked in concern as Ash winced and hissed.
"Yeah," Ash nodded through gritted teeth. "Rowlet just has sharp claws and a super-strong grip."
“Rowlet have powerful legs," Rotom informed the boys. “They use them for battling and collecting items.”
Rowlet quickly emptied the plate before hopping off Ash’s forearm and going back to the bowl. Once the melon was gone, the grass owl sat on the step and let out a happy sigh.
"You feel better now?" Ash asked, standing to put the plate on the table.
Rowlet hooted happily just as Mallow walked out again, this time carrying an uncut watermelon about the same size as Bounsweet.
“That’s good,” she smiled, placing an uncut watermelon on the table.
Ash smiled as he sat on the steps again, watching Rowlet happily chat with Pikachu and Umbreon. Rowlet was adorable; a round little flying type with big eyes. So cute. And Ash had a little soft spot for flying types. In every region he had visited, he had gotten a Flying Type of some kind.
"Ash," Gladion whispered, gently tapping his shoulder.
Ash looked at him, who gestured with his eyes to Rowlet and nodded. Ash blinked in confusion before it dawned on him what Gladion was suggesting. Ash bit his lip. Should he? He looked at Rowlet again. The grass owl seemed pretty calm and friendly and it seemed to get along famously with Pikachu, which was an important bonus in Ash’s book. Maybe it would be a good idea for Rowlet to be his first Alola Pokémon. Shakily, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a Pokéball.
"Um, Rowlet, may I catch you please?" Ash asked in a shaky voice.
Rowlet looked up at him curiously and then at the watermelon on the table before stiffening, its eyes wide. It then flapped its wings, flew up to the table to grab the watermelon in its claws and took off into the sky. But what Rowlet hadn't realised was that Ash’s camera was sitting on the table beside the melon so as it grabbed the fruit, the camera strap was snagged by Rowlet’s claws.
"Rowlet, wait!" Ash cried. "My camera!"
But Rowlet didn't stop. It just kept flying in the direction of the forest. Grabbing his backpack and Pikachu, Ash sprinted after Rowlet, watching anxiously as the camera dangled from Rowlet’s claws. That camera was a present from Tracey, who gave it to him to help him connect with Pokémon. It was durable but a fall from the height Rowlet was flying at would definitely break it.
"Rowlet, come back!" Ash called after the flying Pokémon. “Please.”
"Let's follow," Gladion told Mallow before running after Ash with Umbreon following close behind.
"Right, come on Bounsweet!" Mallow cried, before pursuing with Bounsweet on her shoulder.
"Wait for me!" Rotom yelled.
***
After running through the forest for a bit, Ash, Gladion, Mallow, Rotom and the Pokémon slid to a stop to see Rowlet land in a large nest filled with different flying-type Pokémon. Panting, they watched as one of the flying types praised Rowlet, much to the grass quill Pokémon's delight while some smaller flying types jumped around and cheered.
"Wow," Ash breathed. "Who are they?"
"I'm on it." Rotom quickly snapped a variety of pictures before launching into an explanation of what the different Pokémon were (a Toucannon, a Trumbeak and a flock of little Pikipek), getting in their faces.
"Um, Rotom, maybe you should give them some space," Ash suggested as he moved a little closer before sitting down, pulling out his sketchpad and his pencil.
"But I need to examine Toucannon to see how hot its beak is," Rotom told him, hovering next to Toucannon and running its arms over the massive beak, much to the Cannon Pokémon's annoyance.
Ash rolled his eyes as he started to sketch the flying types while Rotom wailed about how Toucannon had burned it. Gladion and Mallow looked away so they wouldn't laugh, focusing on Ash drawing as fast as he could.
"What are you doing, Ash?" Mallow asked.
"Well, look at them Mallow," Ash smiled. "They're a family. Tracey would kill me if I didn't sketch this."
"But what about catching Rowlet?" Gladion asked.
Ash shook his head. "You don't break up a family," he said quietly.
Gladion smiled before taking a seat next to Ash. "Okay, take as long as you need."
Everyone sat quietly and watched as Ash drew the Pokémon. Rowlet had eventually grown curious and flew over to sit on Ash's head so he could see what Ash was doing, making noises of curiosity and awe as it watched.
"And finished. I’ll colour it later," Ash smiled. "What do you think, Rowlet?"
Rowlet cooed happily before grabbing the book in its talons and flying over to its family to show the picture. Everyone smiled when they saw the Pikipek react in excitement while Trumbeak and Toucannon beamed. After Rowlet flew back to Ash and returned his book, it climbed into Ash's bag, chirping happily. Ash grinned and stood up, about to walk towards the nest when he suddenly felt nervous. Noticing Ash’s hesitation, Gladion stood up and put his hand on Ash’s shoulder.
"Hey, you alright?"
"Um, would you get my camera please?" Ash asked in embarrassment.
Gladion smiled. "Of course. Come on Umbreon."
As Gladion and Umbreon carefully approached the nest so they wouldn't disturb the family, a net came out of nowhere and covered the family, much to everyone’s shock.
"Mimikyu, use Play Rough!"
Suddenly, a blur came out of nowhere, knocking Gladion off his feet and sending Umbreon flying into a tree trunk.
"Umbreon!" Gladion cried out in alarm. "What happened?!"
"Did something happen?" a female voice said. "We'll find out!"
"Noble answers are what we're all about!" a male voice added.
As Team Rocket launched into their annoying motto, Ash ran towards Gladion to help him while Mallow went to check on Umbreon.
"Umbreon's been knocked out!" Mallow called, interrupting Team Rocket from finishing.
"Hey, no interrupting when we're doing our introductions!" Jessie snapped.
"Nobody likes your introductions!" Gladion snapped as Ash helped him up. "What do you idiots want?!"
"Those Pokémon stole Bewear's food!" James snapped. "So, we're here to take it back. But while we're at it, maybe we'll take these Pokémon and give them to the boss with Pikachu as the main prize."
"Not going to happen!" Gladion declared, pulling Lycanroc's Pokéball out of his pocket, ready to defend Ash and Pikachu.
"Guess again dark twerp!" Jessie smirked. "Mimikyu, make sure he can't summon his Lycanroc and then Pikachu is all yours."
Mimikyu then launched itself at Gladion again, using its Shadow Claw to knock Lycanroc's Pokéball out of his hand. Gladion winced in pain, gripping his hand as he watched the Ultra Ball bounce and fall into the clearing below the nest before getting stuck in the viney branches of a strangler tree. It beeped as Lycanroc struggled to emerge from the ball but its position in the thick vines prevented the ball from opening and letting out the wolf Pokémon. Gladion let out a frustrated growl before looking at Ash.
"Ash, you have to battle," he said urgently.
Ash looked at him in shock. "Gladion, I can't!" he said in horror.
"Yes, you can," Gladion smiled encouragingly. "I believe in you. Just try to hold on as long as you can while I get Lycanroc. You can do it."
Ash bit his lip as he looked at Pikachu, who was nervously backing away while Mimikyu menacingly stalked towards him.
"Okay, I'll try," he said.
"I'll be as fast as I can," Gladion promised before beginning to climb down the tree towards the Ultra Ball.
Ash looked at Mimikyu fearfully while Jessie and James cackled.
"You can't battle anymore, twerp!" Jessie mocked cruelly. "And your little boyfriend and his Pokémon can’t protect you now!"
"Face it!" Meowth laughed. "Pikachu is ours!"
Ash's breath quickened as his anxiety started to overwhelm him. He opened his mouth, wanting to tell Pikachu to run but Mimikyu suddenly tackled Pikachu, slapping him with the move Play Rough so aggressively that Ash felt tears forming.
They're right, he thought. I can't do this.
Suddenly, Ash heard a sound behind him. He looked over his shoulder in time to see Rowlet shoot out of his backpack like a bullet before using a grass-type move to surround Pikachu in leaves, separating him from Mimiku’s attacks.
"What?!" Meowth yelled. "Where did that come from?"
Ash watched in amazement as Rowlet grabbed Pikachu before flying back to Ash, dropping Pikachu into Ash's arms.
"You saved Pikachu?" he asked in awe as Rowlet flew over to its family, using its strong legs and claws to break the net before flying back to Ash, landing on his shoulder and gesturing to Team Rocket in determination.
"You want to help me?" Ash asked.
Rowlet hooted in acknowledgement while Pikipek and Trumbeak cheered.
"You can do it, Ash!" Mallow cheered, jumped up and down with Bounsweet and Umbreon.
"Do it, Ash!" Gladion cried as he tried pulling his Ultra Ball from the vines.
Ash sniffed. It felt like his heart was swelling. He then looked over at Team Rocket with determination. He was not going to run and hide this time.
"Okay then," he said as Pikachu jumped from his hands and positioned himself on the ground in a battle stance. "Pikachu, use Electroball to knock Mimikyu back and Rowlet, use Leafage to give it a stronger boost!"
"Pika, pika!" Pikachu yelled as he focused his energy in his tail to form a ball of electricity while Rowlet started to build up energy in the form of leaves on its wings.
"Pi!"
The Electroball spun off Pikachu's tail as Pikachu hurled it towards Mimikyu while Rowlet used Leafage to push it harder. The Electroball hit Mimikyu hard, sending it flying towards Jessie.
"No Mimikyu!" Jessie shrieked in horror as the disguise Pokémon landed at her feet with a thud.
"But how?!" James yelled as Mimilyu stood up, snarling. "The twerp isn't supposed to be able to battle anymore!"
"With my friends supporting and loving me, I can do anything," Ash grinned, feeling adrenaline wash over him. "Pikachu, finish them off with Thunderbolt!"
"Pikachu!" Pikachu screamed as he unleashed his strongest Thunderbolt towards Team Rocket.
Team Rocket screamed in pain before collapsing. Pikachu grinned triumphantly while Ash stood there in shock.
"We won?" he asked as Mimikyu passed out.
"No, Mimikyu!" Jessie shrieked. "You have to keep battling! You have to...Ahhh!"
Everyone blinked as Bewear appeared and gathered Team Rocket in its arms.
"Seriously?" Mallow asked as Bewear skipped away while Team Rocket complained how they were off with a new blast.
Ash stood there in astonishment, not because Bewear had carried away Team Rocket again but because he had battled with Pikachu without freezing. That adrenaline, that excitement, that love. How could he have forgotten it existed? It felt incredible!
"Ash?" Gladion called as he finished climbing back up the tree. "Are you okay?"
Ash slowly turned and looked at him.
"I battled," Ash whispered before his face slowly lit up. "Gladion.”
Gladion smiled. "Yeah?"
"I battled with Pikachu and Rowlet!" Ash cried joyfully as he ran towards Gladion.
Gladion grinned, opening his arms and catching Ash in them before spinning around as Ash hugged him tightly.
"I did it Gladion!" he grinned as Gladion put him down, still holding him tight. "I really did it!"
"You were amazing," Gladion smiled, pulling back slightly so he looked at Ash's face.
Ash giggled breathlessly before pressing his lips against Gladion's. Gladion blinked in surprise before melting into the kiss. Mallow squealed as the two boys wrapped their arms around each other before pulling Rotom down by its arm.
"Please take a picture," she begged. "Lillie would never forgive me if I didn't get a picture!"
"Okay," Rotom said in confusion as it took a picture.
The Pokémon watched as the two boys kissed each other, Pikachu blushing while Umbreon smiled. After the two broke the kiss, Ash and Gladion blushed.
"Sorry," Ash told him bashfully.
"Don't be," Gladion smiled. "I liked it."
Hearing a hoot, Ash and Gladion looked up to see Rowlet flying down to land on Ash's shoulder.
"Thank you for saving Pikachu," Ash smiled as Rowlet nuzzled his cheek.
He then released Gladion and held his fingers to Rowlet's feet. After Rowlet jumped onto his fingers, Ash walked to the nest and placed Rowlet inside, right in between Toucannon, Trumbeak and the Pikipek, who all began to thank and praise Rowlet for his bravery and how well he battled.
"I'll see you later Rowlet," Ash smiled, grabbing his camera and putting the strap around his neck before standing up. Ash then turned and walked back to the group before taking Gladion's hand. "Let's go home."
"But what about Rowlet?" Mallow asked.
"Aren't you going to catch it?" Rotom asked.
"No, it's fine," Ash smiled as Pikachu jumped onto his shoulder. "I can't separate them. They're a family. Besides, I battled with Pikachu today for the first time in forever. Right buddy?"
"Cha!" Pikachu squealed with joy as Ash nuzzled him.
"Also, Gladion and I are together now, if he'll have me?" Ash asked hopefully.
"Of course," Gladion smiled. "I'm here for you."
Ash smiled as he leaned his head against Gladion's shoulder. "That's enough for me. Let's go."
As Ash, Gladion, Mallow and the Pokémon started to walk away, Rowlet watched Ash sadly until it felt Toucannon nudging it.
"Toucannon," he said gently.
"Beak, trum," Trumbeak added.
Rowlet lit up. It then gave the two bird Pokémon a beak nuzzle before flying over towards Ash, snuggling into his backpack. Ash froze and looked over his shoulder to see Rowlet smiling up at him.
"Rowlet?" Ash asked in confusion. "What are you doing?"
Rowlet gestured behind him, showing his family waving goodbye.
"Wait, does that mean..." Ash’s voice trailed off, full of hope.
Rowlet then climbed up to Ash's free shoulder and started rubbing Ash's cheek happily with its beak, causing tears to well up in Ash’s eyes as a smile grew on his face.
"Really?" He asked hopefully, pulling a Pokéball out of his pocket and holding it up in front of Rowlet.
Rowlet nodded before tapping the button with its beak. There was a flash as the Pokéball opened and accepted Rowlet inside. The ball rolled in Ash's hand a couple of times before making a noise, indicating that Rowlet had accepted being caught. Ash held the Pokéball to his chest as he wept happily.
"I caught a Rowlet," he announced happily as Gladion wrapped him in a hug.
"Pi, Pikachu!" Pikachu cheered.
"You can catch a Pokémon that way?!" Rotom shrieked in shock while Mallow beamed.
"I'm so proud of you Ash," Gladion smiled.
"Thank you," Ash smiled. "I'm not sure if I'm fully healed yet so will you keep being there for me?"
"As long as you wish," Gladion smiled before pressing a kiss to Ash's forehead. "And after that too."
