He'd barely opened his laptop when the pale light finally gave his eyes enough to see her.
Or rather: her legs.
She was sprawled sideways in a battered armchair in the corner of the arrangement, knees hooked over the arm, one foot bare, planted against the cool floor, toes taped with a band-aid scrawled with kanji, the other in a bright blue sock.
And though that, in itself, was noticeable, his eyes stuck on her thigh. Her very bare thigh, marked by the bright, white sweep of an old scare that bisected the left thigh—the skin glossy and oddly beautiful in the flicker of the desk lamp as, belatedly, he pulled it alive.
She was already looking at him when the low golden light flickered alive.
