There’s no penguins in Alaska

Summary:

Yoshida likes to buy Denji things. Denji likes it when Yoshida buys him things. Usually there are no complications in this dynamic they share. One day Denji makes a request Yoshida cannot fulfill, so instead he compensates in the second best way.

OR

Yoshida gets Denji a penguin tracking bracelet

Notes:

Inspired by a tweet from @decembercache on twitter that i cannot stop thinking about.

Work Text:

“I want a penguin.” Denji says unpromotedly in the middle of some café they dropped by at. His eyes were buried in a menu and there was no possible way any inspiration for a pet penguin could ever come to mind at any point while reading it to anybody else except for Denji of course.
Yoshida is already staring at him, “A penguin?”
“Yeah. Like the ones you see at the aquarium but as a pet.”
“Penguins cannot be pets, Denji.” Yoshida says as if it's completely obvious to everybody else in the world except for him.
And it should absolutely be obvious. Penguins can only live in Antarctica. Everybody knows this, including Denji. Unfortunately, Denji cannot accept that.

“I know they can’t be,” his face gets red, “I've seen one before in an aquarium once. Ive held one!” He drops the menu to make a gesture of holding a penguin in his hands. “could you maybe break into an aquarium and steal a penguin for me?”
For a second Yoshida does think about doing it. “I don’t think I can do that for you.”
“I’ll kiss you if you do it man, please!”
Before Yoshida can foolishly say “yes” to that ridiculous request, a waitress interrupts both of them.

Okay, so maybe stealing a penguin from an aquarium is not a good idea. And owning a pet penguin is pretty unrealistic. Denji realizes that he should come to terms with the fact that he cannot possibly own one anytime soon. He instead sulks in the comfort of his own apartment until he hears a knock on the door,
“Nayuta, get the door”
“You go get it!” She shouts from a different room.
He lets out a loud groan before getting up to open the door. Of course it is nobody other than Yoshida standing there with a small bag in his hands.

“I want my penguin.” No ‘hello’ or ‘how are you’.
“I have something better.” He holds up a plastic bag with a big smile.
Denji feels a little pissed, “you can't bribe me with food this time, man. Be a little more creative.”
“It isn’t food and this is creative.” He takes out a small charm bracelet from the bag. It's beaded and in the middle of it, there appears to be a penguin shaped bead.
“A bracelet?” He says as Yoshida drops it into his palm.
“Actually this is better than a bracelet.” He holds up a card, “this tracks a real penguin in realtime so you know where they are.” The card contains a code and a personal name for said penguin.
Denji's eyes beam, “Wait, actually?” He grabs the card so fast it almost rips. Yoshida giggles at the urgency. The instructions seem simple enough. He just needs to use his phone and he can check on the animal anytime he wants to. He’s so excited he can hear his heart pound so hard into his eardrums. This was basically the same thing as owning a penguin for all he cared,
“You’re unreal, Hiro!” He doesn't think much before reaching in and kissing him just as he had promised. “Now can you show me how to track it?”
Yoshida gets a little lightheaded before nodding. Maybe he will end up actually getting that penguin he asked for afterall.
