The arrival of a letter a few weeks prior, addressed to him in urgency, alluded to some form of acute mental affliction on the part of the sender, and expressed an earnest desire to see Viktor. It was the alarming candor in which all this was written, that allowed Viktor no room for hesitation, but to hasten his way to the House of Talis. To Viktor’s father, Mr. Talis had been a good friend, and to his two younger siblings a most noble mentor; but to Viktor, he had been what could almost be described as an intimate companion, if one was amongst private and trusted company. To refuse a call from him was akin to refusing a call from one’s own sire, for there was no one held higher in Viktor’s esteem, and indeed in his heart, than the vain and charming Mr. Talis.
