“… I don’t want it to be his…” Tanjiro whispered suddenly, so quiet Genya almost missed it. His fingers dug into the fabric of his sleeves until his knuckles blanched white. “We-we-we-we— we don’t even like each other! He broke my fingers the first time we met! Why… why did we even— why did I let—” His breath hitched, shoulders jerking forward like he’d been punched mid-sentence.
Genya’s throat tightened. He could still see the faint crookedness of Tanjiro’s left ring finger where Gyutaro had snapped it sideways—could still remember Tanjiro’s scream while Inosuke lost his shit in the background, nearly taking his own older brother’s head off with a damn thirty pound weight Inosuke had hurled at him from across the room. Genya swallowed hard. “You didn’t *let* anything,” he growled. “We were fucking wasted. And Gyutaro’s a manipulative piece of shit who knew exactly what he was doing.”
Tanjiro’s breathing hitched again, uneven. His hands hovered near his stomach before flinching away like he’d been burned. Genya’s gut twisted. He could count on one hand the times he’d seen Tanjiro cry.
