Work Text:
The car smelled like antiseptic and fast food as they both sat in the car at 2 in the morning. Tim was finishing up his fries from their order. Jay pretends to not notice how Tim is practically glaring at him.
“Y’know. Normal people don’t run after people with guns in their hands,” He said, waving his fry as he spoke. “Especially if the guy wants to, I don't know… kill you?
Jay makes a face of embarrassment. Damn it. “I didn’t run.”
“Oh yeah, you definitely limped after him.” He scoffs. “What were you thinking? You were already bleeding, I was half a mile back!”
Jay looks at him. “I couldn’t just let him go.” Tim glares.
“That’s exactly what you should’ve done rather than hobble after him.” Tim put his hand on the wheel. “You’re lucky that I heard his first shot.” He glares at him. “You don’t get to keep doing this, running headfirst into all of these situations like you’re expendable. That I won’t care-”
His voice cracked as he spoke.
Jay swallows, “Tim- I thought if I caught him I could get answers-”
“And what if you got shot? Stabbed? Dragged somewhere I can’t follow?” He turns to look completely at Jay. “Do you have any idea what it feels like to see you do that?”
Jay stays quiet.
“I- didn’t want you there if something happened.” Jay says quietly.
Tim looks at him, holding back tears. “As if that- I- I’m not mad. I’m not mad at you. I’m just mad at the boy who keeps running after Alex.” He flicks Jay’s forehead.
Jay looks at Tim. “I’m only the boy who keeps running after Alex. I’m very.. Stupid.” He agrees.
Tim puts his hand against the bandaged area and smiles slightly.
“Idiot.”
Jay let out a tired scoff. “Your favorite idiot?”
He smiles slightly, “Yeah.” He mumbles as he backs out of their parking spot.
