Consolation Prize

Summary:

Lucy, Tim, Celina & Aaron have been picked to run the LAPD Christmas market booth. Someone is way more thrilled about it than everyone else…

Work Text:

“This isn’t really about community policing, is it?”, Aaron sighed after having yet another teenager steal a pin from their stand, running away as if they weren’t free in the first place.

“Looks like someone got his braincells working.”, Celina teased, all while Lucy and Tim were arguing over how to decorate their booth.

“I’m telling you, the more bows and fairy lights we hang up, the more people we attract.”

“And that’s the exact reason we are not doing more bows.”, Tim deadpanned, prying the red ribbon out of Lucy’s hand.

This year, they were bestowed with the honor of running the LAPD booth at the Mid-Wilshire Christmas market. Just that it wasn’t an honor. Far from it.

As a matter of fact, running the booth is used as a common threat amongst colleagues for the entire year and the ones who have to do it in the end are being laughed at. That kind of thing.

And Tim was not having it.

“Come on…”, Lucy begged, still holding on to the ribbon Tim was trying to take away from her. “I don’t wanna spend the next few days here doing nothing.”

“Oh, I can very much get myself arranged with doing nothing.”, Celina chimed in, earning an excessive nod from Aaron. “Face it, Lucy, this is a consolation prize.”

“More like a ‘Fuck you, guys’-prize.”, Tim mumbled under his breath, prompting Lucy to nudge his side. Tim twitched away slightly, hissing.

“I’m just saying, it’s really not that bad. We’re on a Christmas market, talking about something we stand for with all our hearts and afterwards, we can go to that hut over there and get drunk on mulled wine!”, Lucy swarmed, only to be met with three fed-up pairs of eyes.

“Also, it’s freezing and I can’t feel my feet. We’re not getting paid for this-”, Aaron started, quickly being interrupted by Tim. “And this booth is an invitation for people to tell us about their problems.”

“But that’s what we’re here for, no?”, Lucy argued, causing Celina to raise her hands in response, as if she was surrendering. “I mean, good that at least someone is happy to be here.”

“Yeah.”, Lucy nodded, pulling the ribbon away from Tim the moment he let his guard down, causing him to sigh in frustration. “And since apparently, I’ll be the one doing most of the talking, I say we’re doing more bows!”

“We really can’t stop you, can we?”, Tim capitulated and Lucy grinned, stepping on the ladder.

“No, you can’t. And now make yourself useful and help me.”
