Work Text:
Hisashi let out a deep breath and rang the doorbell. It had been years since he’d last seen Inko and Izumi in person, his beautiful wife and his amazing little girl. He’d been working in the United States ever since Izumi was three. He’d had to miss so much, but his work had paid off! He was moving back to the company’s Japanese branch, back to Musutafu, back to the two- Oh no, three- three incredible ladies he called family. That’s right, Izumi was out of the closet and engaged now! She was going to marry another beautiful girl named Ochako Uraraka. Gosh, he couldn’t wait to meet her at last.
Finally the door opened, and to his unending joy, he finally saw his little girl face to face for the first time since she was a toddler. To his immense shock however, his little girl wasn’t so little anymore.
And not in the sense that Izumi was 18 years old and had obviously grown into a young adult since he’d last seen her, that would have been shocking too but it would have made logical sense. This wasn’t that. Izumi had gotten big. Really big! Really, really big! She stood at least 2.8 meters tall and was built like a tank! Hisashi suddenly remembered how much Izumi idolized All Might- a memory that turned pretty amusing when he realized she was wearing an All Might T shirt with the sleeves torn off and the bottom half missing- clearly she took his example to heart.
“Hey dad,” she murmured, her eyes welling up with her tears.
Hisashi felt his heart swell. No matter how big she’d gotten, she was still his little crybaby. “Hey sweetie.” The father crossed the threshold and gave his not so little girl a hug. “It’s been a long time, how are you baby girl?”
“Well I graduated middle and high school and now I’m the number three hero in Japan. I came out of the closet and now I’m dating the girl I was crushing on the entire time I was in high school and now she’s a pro too. I met All Might and became his protege. I kind of fell out with Kacchan but we made up a while ago. I’ve made a lot of friends at UA and at work. My dreams came true? Everything is going so great!”
“So are you happy, Izumi?” Hisashi asked.
“I’m happier than I ever imagined being.”
Hisashi smiled up at her and took a seat on the couch. “That’s so great, sweetie! So where’s everyone else?”
“Mom, Uraraka, and All Might are in the kitchen.”
“All Might is here too?!” Hisashi yelped, standing back up.
“I am here!” Hollered the former symbol of peace, bursting into the room while looking visibly thinner than Hisashi remembered. “Saying hello to young Midoriya’s father. How do you do sir?” The enormous man greeted, offering his hand to the apoplectic younger man.
It was shocking enough to be standing face to face with the former number one hero but it was somehow even more mad that the man was shorter than his daughter. “I-I-I’m doing quite well sir! My goodness! I knew you and my family were close but I didn’t realize how close! Goodness me!”
The taller man let out a boisterous laugh. “I love your daughter as if she were my own, you and your wife made an incredible young woman. You should be very proud!”
Hisashi smiled as he glanced (further) up at his daughter, her cheeks were red and her eyes were filling with happy tears again. He felt an overwhelming sense of pride in his baby girl, pride that was soon replaced with shame as he looked into the kitchen to hear his wife and his daughter’s girlfriend laughing together as they made dinner. He’d missed so much. So many important moments he wanted to be part of but hadn’t been there for. “I am proud, but I’m not sure how much credit I can take here. From what I gather, you and Inko should take the lion’s share of the credit.”
“Oh come on dad, you weren’t right next to me, but you were still there for me. When I was first being trained by All Might, there was a moment where I almost gave up because I was so tired and exhausted from everything but you asked me what was more important, not being tired or being a great hero? And that was the moment I realized I didn’t want to be a great hero, I wanted to be the greatest hero in the world! The greatest that ever lived!”
“And you’re well on your way young Midoriya,” All Might beamed.
“It seems like the training pulled off, what are you benching, Izumi?” Hisashi laughed.
Izumi thought for a moment. “Usually 1907 kilos with no equipment, 3300 even with grips and a lifting shirt, but those numbers are just without using my quirk.”
Hisashi’s jaw dropped. “3300 kilograms?”
“On an off day,” she shrugged.
“On an off day?!”
“It’s not that impressive,” Izumi insisted.
Hisashi looked back at All Might who shook his head.
“Is my favorite hero in the world not giving herself enough credit?” Teased a woman’s voice with a thick accent.
Hisashi grinned. “I know that voice!”
Ochako smiled back at her girlfriend’s father. “It’s great to finally meet you in person, Mr. Midoriya!”
“Likewise Miss Uraraka,” the green haired man greeted, moving to hug the young woman.
“Ah ah ah, it’s not Miss Uraraka anymore,” Ochako smirked.
Hisashi chuckled. “My apologies Miss Uravity.”
“Not what I meant,” the smug brunette replied, holding up her left hand.
Hisashi and All Might’s jaws both dropped as they stared in awe. A golden band shaped like an infinity symbol with a pink jewel at the center of it.
“Oh that’s right! My apologies Mrs. Midoriya! Oh my goodness! When did this happen again?” Hisashi laughed, feeling rather silly he’d forgotten this young woman was his family now.
“Right after graduation, we wanted to surprise you,” Ochako answered.
“Why didn’t you tell me, young Midoriya?” All Might asked, looking up at his protege.
“I was kind of waiting for you to notice, I kept mentioning that we were planning on inviting you, mom, dad, and her parents out to Hawaii for a big event next summer,” Izumi answered. “I’ve been wearing my own engagement ring during training. I even told you I was going to ask her ‘the big question’ like a week before I got on one knee.”
All Might clammed up.
“I thought you were asking about her joining your agency,” the tall man murmured.
“In fairness sir, I would have thought the same thing,” Hisashi admitted.
“And that’s why I had to ask him to marry me,” laughed a fifth voice.
“Inko! My love!” Hisashi sighed, immediately running across the room to embrace her.
“Hi honey,” Inko said softly, burying her face in the crook of her husband’s neck.
The husband and wife had not been face to face in far too long. They’d been confined to just seeing each other through a screen, they hadn’t felt each other’s touch or inhaled their scents since before their child could even ride a bike. They’d been married for 23 years but had only been physically together for more than a few days for four of them. As a Japanese-American, as long as he was living in the United States full time, Hisashi constantly had to file extensive paperwork for traveling back to his family’s home that took months to complete and only allowed him to be back in Japan for a week at most, and that was on top of just how busy his office usually was even during the holidays. And then during the most important time in his daughter’s life, he wasn’t allowed to be back in his home country because of travel restrictions during the war with the League of Villains.
He’d missed so much. He’d missed his daughter growing up, finding love, finding herself, and becoming a hero. He’d missed the chance to grow old with his beloved wife. He’d missed so many friends and family members passing or moving into new places in their life, figurative and literal.
Well that was done with now. He’d watch his daughter rise further up. And his daughter-in-law. And his nephew, Katsuki. He’d get to know his daughter’s friends. He’d get to know his daughter herself! There was so much about Izumi he barely knew about and he couldn’t wait to learn mo-
“Mr. Midoriya, you’re muttering,” All Might pointed out.
“Huh?” Hisashi murmured, looking back at the former Symbol of Peace. “Oh! I’m sorry! I think out loud without realizing it sometimes.”
“So that’s where I got that,” Izumi chuckled.
“The freckles, the messy hair, the notebook keeping, those are all me. The kindness, the determination, and emotionality are your mother. The size though, I don’t know where the hell that came from!” Hisashi laughed. “Your mother’s only 160 centimeters, I’m only 165, but you’re standing here bigger than him! What did you do?!”
Izumi giggled. “A mix of genuine hard work and my quirk. It turned out that my quirk was an energy stockpile that powered up my body when I tapped into it. The power increased the more active I was physically but in order to access it at all, I had to bulk up a lot. I went from 48 kilos to 65 in a year, then when I got my quirk, well at first my body couldn’t handle the power.”
Hisashi nodded. He remembered many times hearing Inko and Izumi talk about how his daughter was breaking her fingers, hands, arms, feet, and legs just using her new power. “And so you kept bulking up to use your power more easily?”
“That was the plan but it looks like my body had the same idea because the doctors saw that my quirk was affecting my pituitary gland. I was getting taller and putting on muscle more easily because my body couldn’t handle the power as I was and needed to grow to protect itself.”
Hisashi looked his daughter up and down. She looked more like All Might’s daughter than his, it was pretty impressive. “Just how powerful are you sweetie?”
“During the entrance exam, the day we met, I was trapped under some rubble with a zero pointer coming towards me,” Ochako explained, her voice betraying a smug edge. “That’s a robot. A big robot! Bigger than this apartment building. This girl was 5 foot nothing at the time and she jumps into the air and punches this giant robot in it’s fucking face and it fucking crumbles like a soda can!” She explained.
Hisashi stared at his daughter-in-law in bewilderment.
“That was almost four years ago,” the brunette added, playfully slugging her fiancee in the shoulder.
Izumi shrugged, trying not to look as smug as her bride to be did.
The green haired man started to chuckle. “Well shit! We’ve got a lot of catching up to do! I’ve been getting into fitness in my old age too, so maybe I can spot you!”
Izumi gave her father an amused look and flexed one of her arms. “If you think you can handle it dad.”
“On second thought, maybe All Might can spot you and you two can spot me,” Hisashi conceded with a small laugh.
“Sounds like fun! I’d love to talk more and for you two to get to know each other,” Izumi grinned.
“Alright alright, enough talk! Let’s eat! We haven’t had a family dinner together since the week before Izumi’s exam and we haven’t had a proper family dinner since Izumi was three,” Inko declared. “Into the dining room everyone! We’ve got KFC, katsudon, brats, and, at Toshinori’s insistence, Christmas ham and cheesy potatoes!”
“Sounds great! I haven’t had a decent meal with my family in way too long!”
Izumi gave her father a hug. “Merry Christmas dad.”
“Merry Christmas sweetie,” Hisashi sighed contentedly, hugging his enormous daughter back.
