Summary
Will’s body is heavy as Mike drags him out of the quarry.
His lungs are burning and feel too small altogether, unable to hold any of the air he is trying to force into them. He can feel Will's hands slipping up his chest, the limp body sliding lower against his back. Mike hoists him up again, readjusting his grip. His nails dig into the other boys’ wrists a little tighter, breaking the soft and pale skin.
They are getting closer to the shore, Mike figures. His thoughts are sluggish, coming slow and hard to grasp. He only knows that he must get them out, the need to tend to Will growing, more urgent and all encompassing, entire body thrumming Will Will Will with every step he takes towards the bank.
The other boy is an increasingly grave weight on his back. Mike never wants to stop carrying it.
