Chapter Text
Robert Robertson III had never felt so taken care off in his life. When he agreed to be Sonar's boyfriend, the bat had screeched so loud it caused a mini sonic boom in the park a few blocks from the SDN.
He wasn't used to getting doted on even when he was a kid. He'd become self sufficient and independent but now having not only a super powered hybrid boyfriend but an affluent super powered hybrid boyfriend, he really felt spoiled. Sonar took every chance to shower the man in things he could only ever dream of before. Robert never even managed to pull out his wallet fast enough when he was with Victor, one tap here, a swipe there and boom everything was take care of.
Sonar's previous crimes were fraud based so he knew his way around finances. He had investments on a lot of good companies and start ups that showed great promise, he even did financial consulting on the side, top it off with his paycheck for working at the SDN...he was loaded. Not to mention any assets not seized when he got caught.
Robert at times felt insecure when the hybrid lavished him with expenses, like he didn't have much to offer in the relationship other than him being there. He decided to do something for his man and he thought of just how to do that.
It was the weekend but Victor was out today with a consultation which gave Robert just enough time to plan for the evening, he even asked Malevola if she wanted to help and have dinner with them but she declined dinner yet agreed to help with preparing for Robert's planned evening.
"Alright babes just keep mixing for a minute then add in the next ingredient as it says in the recipe" Mal instructed as she expertly chopped some fruit for a fruit bowl. They had agreed would be all of the bats favorite fruits, which consisted most of bananas, dragon fruit and kiwis, swiping a few bits here and there as a snack.
"Thanks Mal, and thanks again for helping me get this together. I can't cook past the occasional breakfast which mostly just means frying whatever proteins we have" Robert lamented while keeping an eye on the stew he was trying to make.
"No probs, I just wanted you guys to have a decent date night that didn't involve ol Victor to splurge again. I know he's got the means but dang boy, he already has you. Stop showboatin', It's actually really sweet how you want to spoil him for a change" Mal said with a proud smile.
"It's not as if I don't try, I've saved quite a chunk of my salary cause he wants everything on his dime. Ever since I agreed to live with you guys it's as if I'm a sugar baby" The man complained concentrating on adding the pearl onions into the stew.
"That makes two of us but I've grown used to it and he knows when to pull that shit with me. You're different though Rob, I mean, he's nevah really expected a lot from relationships but with you, he really wants to do what's right" The demoness said finishing off the last of the fruit.
"So I've heard, he's really different compared to when i first met him" The man said smiling at the memory.
"We all have Rob, first we were "villains" then a team and now a somewhat functionally dysfunctional family" Mal laughed placing the fruits in the fridge to cool. She placed it beside a few special items Robert got for the hybrid as a special surprise.
"That's true, I've kinda started seeing you as like a big sister, kinda like I do with Chase. With the way you handled Victor before he got clean, that was quite a feat" Robert said turning down the heat to a gentle simmer.
"Aww thanks babes, means a lot. Now let's go over the evening real quick before I leave" she said taking of the apron she was wearing and hanging it up by the fridge.
"Alright, stew is still simmering, wine is in the ice bucket, dessert is fruits and his treats are in the fridge. Did I miss anything?"
"Nah sounds all good, are you well stocked up on-" "Yes!" Robert cut her off knowing what she meant before giving the man a devilish smile.
"Just teasing Rob but in all honesty, you're so good for Victor. He's convinced himself he's on borrowed time with you. He always worries that someday you'd find someone more...normal and break up with him. As I said before he wasn't much for relationships before as they all just lead down the road to heartbreak but with you...well he's the happiest I've evah seen him" Mal said with a sincere smile. Rob looked away embarrassed but proud himself. He'd have to drill into that bathead that he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
"Guess you're good. Come'ere, gotta go now" Mal said giving the man a fierce hug he returned gratefully. She opened a portal and waved goodbye as she headed off for the night.
Robert returned to the stew and seeing that it was almost ready, he killed the heat and let it finish cooking with the residual heat. He tapped away at his phone when heard the front door opening and briskly walked to it.
"Bobert! I'm home!" the hybrid called out with a grin as Robert turned the corner.
"I know you can hear me coming when you arrive, no need to call out"
"I know, I just like calling out to you" He said with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
"You're funny" Robert deadpanned but smiled nonetheless as he helped his man shrug off his coat and blazer followed by his tie.
"Something smells good and was Mal here? I can smell her brimstone scent" Victor commented sniffing the air.
"Yeah she was here, she helped me make dinner and left before you arrived and before you ask, yes I did invite her to stay" Robert said loosening the buttons on Victor's shirt. He looked up and saw the hybrid looking at him like he hung the moon and the stars.
"Stop staring" Robert scolded smacking the bat's chest lightly. Sonar's arms wrapped around his waist as he grinned at his man.
"You just look like the perfect wife for me, that's all" he chuckled at how red Robert had gotten. He really did adore this man.
Robert pulled away but grasped the hybrids hand as he pulled the hybrid into the kitchen. Beef had run up to the hybrid and was awaiting belly rubs and maybe a treat for just being a good boy. Vic smiled at the chonky boy as Robert let go of his hand to tend to the food. He reached for the treat when he heard Robert scold him "He's on a diet Vic but half a treat won't hurt".
"Sure Mom, here that boy mama doesn't want you getting chonkier" Victor cooed giving the pup a generous "half" of a treat.
"He stood and the food was already plated. Two steaming bowls of beef stews, Robert came back with an ice bucket with a good old vintage Victor always drank for special occasions.
"Oh shit, did I miss something today?" Victor said slowly panicking.
Robert scoffed but reached out to the hybrid to cease any potential spiral.
"You're good Vic, can't I just make my boyfriend dinner?" he said wrapping his arms around Victor's furry neck. The hybrid visibly relaxed as he leaned his forehead on the man's
"Good, I'd really hate to miss anything, I'm good with dates and stuff" Victor said, holding back his usual "I graduated at Harvard" line
"Yeah you're good" Robert said reaching up giving Sonar's snout a peck as he pulled away to head to the dining table, as he knew that if the hybrid got...distracted, the food would have gotten cold.
"Looks good, didn't know you could cook so well Bobbert" Vic teased picking up his fork and picking up a piece of beef, taking a tentative whiff of the aroma and putting the whole chunk in his mouth. It was an explosion of flavor and he hummed in bliss.
"I take it it's good?" Robert snarked but the hybrid didn't grace him a reply as he began to gorge himself with his meal. Robert just smiled as he tucked into his own meal and wow, it was fan-frickin-tastic...if he can say so himself. When Sonar finished first and was visibly restraining himself from licking his plate clean, Robert offered him a second serving for which the hybrid graciously accepted. He took Victo'r's plate and headed to the kithen, addin in more of the stew and along with a spoon so he would scrape the plate clean instead of licking it.
Victor still gave him that lovesick stare with that half smirk which made him feel a little giddy. Victor poured the wine as Robert go the desert and his surprise gifts from the fridge. The hybrid looked at him curiously as he set down the things he brought and took his seat again.
"Now I feel like I really missed something" Victor said worriedly looking at the thing the man placed on the table.
"Like I said Vic, I just really wanted to do something for you. You've already done a lot for me, can't I spoil my boyfriend just a little?" Any protest from the hybrid died down as he saw the bashful look the man was giving him, a light flush blooming beneath his freckles.
"I'm getting you back for this" Victor begrudgingly said but looked away so the other man can't see him look bashful too.
"I know you will, wanna open those now or wait until after dinner?" Victor didn't answer but just continued eating which gave Robert the go signal to finish his own meal and sip at the delectable wine.
With their plates polished off, desert picked through and Beef fed, the two had settled on the couch. Robert had taken Victor's gifts to their small coffee table. Where the hybrid was excitedly waiting.
Victor wasted no time opening the first box, it was a selection of chocolates but not just any chocolates. Chocolate covered insects some even had gold foil on them.
"I got them from the edible arrangements place Phenomaman got his melons from...They have a pretty unique selection and -" He couldn't finish as Victor lunged at him, messily kissing him with raw emotion. He couldn't help but smile as they kissed, repositioning their connection to be less awkward. The hybrid tried to deepen the kiss but the man gently pushed him away.
"Calm down Vic, geez" Robert mused but the hybrid just wanted to pull him in more.
"You have to try those first and you still have another one to open" Robert scolded getting up to move to the other end of the couch. Victor just pouted but tried one of the treats Robert got for him. His eyes grew wide at the depth of flavor that exploded in his mouth. He knew the taste, these were cocoa beetles, he didn't realize he'd already eaten three until Robert chuckled from the side.
"You're not kissing me with bug remnants in your mouth" The man teased and the hybrid just looked away. He covered up the box to save for later.
"No promises but can you at least be here by my side? Please?" Victor begged with a whine.
"You're as bad as Beef but fine" The man scooched over and the hybrid immediately pulled him to his side with his free hand using the other to expertly open the other gift Robert had given him. He pulled up the lid and there was a navy colored bundle nestled inside the box. He picked it up and it was a beanie with large enough holes on the sides for his ears. He reluctantly let go of Robert to pick up the remaining bundle in the box. It was a red scarf just like his favorite tie. He turned his gaze to the man beside him.
"Sorry they're a bit shabby. I asked some of the old ladies in the building to teach me how to knit, stabbed myself a few times with the needles and..." He trailed off as Victor just blankly stared at the items in his hands. Robert began to feel nervous. "Hey, I know they're shit but-" Victor fixed him an annoyed look.
"Shit? You call these items lovingly made for me as shit?! I'm offended Robert" The hybrid scolded before softening his expression. "I love them, I honestly do. (sigh) You could've gotten me cashmere or silk but...knowing the fact you spent hours in your day, working with something that's new to you just for me?! I don't deserve you" He said the last part quietly but Robert heard it.
"Hey, if anything...I don't deserve you-" the man tried but Victor cut him off.
"Impossible! You're Mecha Man! Part of the greatest lineage of heroes this world has had and everyone would gladly fling themselves at your feet. You're amazing...and I'm me. A drug addicted, Harvard graduate that hasn't much to offer..." He said dejectedly "It's a miracle you've stayed with me for this long and it's an even bigger miracle you even wanted to be with me in the first place when you could do so much better" He added looking away.
Robert sighed, he understood what Mal was saying earlier. He never wants this man to feel this way ever again. He reached out and tugged at the hybrids shoulder urging them to face him. Victor did and warm hands cupped his face and Robert swooped in to capture his lips...bug breath and all.
"You will not talk about my boyfriend like that. Not when he's an EX addict that's doing his best for the people that once saw him as something to be feared. Sure he's a hybrid, so what? I love his fur that keeps me warm at night, he's super amazing when it comes to his senses and he's a frickin Harvard graduate. He's got Brains , charm and not to mention money but...I love him despite of that. I love YOU Victor. You didn't know me as Mecha man starting up. Even when you knew you treated me as Robert, not Mecha Man and that means so much to me, more than you'll know. You even got me worried sometimes cause if you think I can do better...well so can you" Robert said pouring his heart out, he felt his heart clench after he heard him self say Sonar can do better and he can.
"You're an IDIOT if you think that Robert! No fair, I wanted to tell you that first...I love you too" Victor said wiping the other's eyes as he saw the tears forming.
"We're BOTH idiots it seems" the man said nuzzling against the hybrids hand.
"Wait here, It's my turn" Victor said getting up and going towards their room, Beef happily following the hybrid. Robert just sat there calming down after their little moment...wait, Victor got him something too?!
