The party was bustling, people talking and laughing, the music was playing loudly with the ball drop streaming over the tv. It was the first time Boq had been to Fiyero's yearly New Year's party.
"Obviously you're coming to my party." Fiyero said, sitting on Boq's desk in their shared dorm as the other man tried to write his essay.
"You're what?" Boq looked up from his paper confused.
"My New Year's party, I throw it every year, and since we're friends you're definitely going." Fiyero explained it as if they'd been friends way longer than just four months. Which sure, he guessed Fiyero had been including him in a majority of activities ever since they met, but…
"I don't know, parties aren't really… my thing?" Boq awkwardly fiddled with his pencil.
Fiyero looked at him confused, "What are you talking about, we go to parties all the time?"
"I mean… you kind of just take me to parties, I wouldn't really be going if you didn't…" Boq watched as Fiyero seemed to pause at that, watching Boq for a second and making the man squirm.
"Alright, well… I suppose you don't have to be at my New Year's party, but!" Boq cut off his relieved sigh. "I'd really like it if you were there." Fiyero said, looking at Boq with those pleading eyes of his. Dammit.
Boq wanted to scream. "I…" He huffed out a breath, "Okay fine… I'll be there." The way Fiyero's face brightened made the decision a little bit worth it. Though the hug Fiyero wrapped him in made it a lot worth it.
"I promise you'll have the best time!"
Boq was certainly… having a time. He was currently camped out against the wall, nursing his drink as he watched Fiyero in the distance chatting up a storm. Boq momentarily wondered if he would be able to just leave without Fiyero noticing. But as soon as he had that thought, Fiyero's head turned and locked eyes with him.
The man made his way over, maneuvering through the crowd with all the grace that Boq had come to get used to. He was like a ballet dancer the way he swerved and spun around people before appearing in front of Boq. "There you are!" Fiyero grinned, placing a hand on the side of Boq's bicep, squeezing it before letting go.
"Here I am." Boq laughed awkwardly.
"Having fun?"
"Um… well…" Boq hesitated and Fiyero tilted his head. "Sure?"
Fiyero frowned a bit, "What? What is it?"
"It's just… I don't really know anyone else here but you? And I've tried to talk to people but I just…" Boq looked down at his drink, staring at the liquid.
"Huh…" He heard Fiyero say and then the man was wrapping an arm around his shoulders and leading him away from the wall, "Guess I'll just have to stick by your side then."
Boq's head sprang up, "Oh! N-No, that's not— you don't have to! I didn't mean—" He was panicking, "I didn't mean that to guilt you into making time for me!"
Fiyero looked at Boq as if he had grown another head, "Boq, what on earth are you talking about? Since when have I ever let anyone tell me to do something I didn't want to do, hm?"
"N-Never?"
"Exactly!" Fiyero rolled his eyes, "I swear… Boq, I like hanging out with you, I would have stuck around you for the rest of the night whether or not you were having fun."
"Oh, um… i-if you're sure?"
"Of course I'm sure!" Fiyero held him close to his side, "Now come on, lets go have some fun!"
Fiyero ended up keeping his promise to stay by Boq's side all night. He introduced him to some people at the party, they even danced together and Boq was actually starting to have a fun time.
As midnight approached, more people started hovering around Fiyero, and Boq had a strong feeling of what they wanted. The two of them were currently sitting down at the bar set up to the side of the room. Boq once again just fiddling with his cup instead of actually drinking. He was far too busy glancing over periodically at the clock.
Fiyero took a drink as he looked at Boq, "Have you had a New Year's kiss before?"
Boq looked at him, "What makes you ask that?"
"You said you don't go to parties, so I assumed you never really had the chance?" Fiyero asked curiously, "Unless I'm assuming wrong, then please forgive me."
"No, it's fine, you're right… I've never really had a New Year's kiss, unless you count me kissing my mom on the cheek?"
Fiyero shrugged, "Ehhh, I'm more talking about a full kiss?" When Boq shook his head, Fiyero just looked him over, "Hm… that's a shame."
"What?" Boq asked but was cut off as someone yelled '20 seconds!' He saw as those same people who were lingering around moved closer to Fiyero, all trying to get into his line of sight. Boq watched them for a moment before looking back down at his drink, tapping his fingers lightly on the side.
He listened as everyone started counting down from ten. Fiyero's voice sticking out the most to his ears.
"9, 8, 7, 6!"
Boq didn't look up, not wanting to watch as everyone around him had someone to kiss and he didn't. Not wanting to watch Fiyero kiss however many people were able to get their hands on him.
"5, 4, 3, 2!"
He placed his drink down and before he could excuse himself from the bar, a hand was on his shoulder and he heard multiple gasps around him.
"1! Happy New Year!"
Boq was horizontal, being tipped back on his seat as an arm wrapped around his waist. Shock coursed through him as a pair of lips were pressed against his. It took him a second before he realized that Fiyero was kissing him. Fiyero was actually kissing him and he wanted to yell in frustration when Fiyero pulled away before Boq had a chance to kiss him back.
He could hear the disappointed groans of the people around them but all he could focus on was Fiyero smiling down at him. "How was that?"
"Wh-what?" Boq asked, still in shock.
Fiyero chuckled, "How was that? For a first New Year's kiss?"
Boq stared at him and his face heated up. "I uh.. I…" Fiyero waited, ever so patiently, still holding Boq in that dipped position. "Well I… I'm not sure… you kind of caught me off guard so I couldn't really…process it?"
Fiyero nodded a bit, "Ah, my mistake, let me fix that." Then Fiyero's lips were on his again and Boq melted. This time he was able to pull himself together quick enough to kiss back. His hands moving to grip at Fiyero's jacket as he sighed against the man's lips.
After a couple moments, Fiyero pulled away again, lifting Boq back into a sitting position but keeping his arm around his waist. "Well?"
"That…" Boq felt his face heat up more, "Was really nice…"
Fiyero grinned, a shining one full of excitement and giddiness, "I was hoping so."
"How… how was it for you?" Boq asked, feeling very shy all of a sudden.
Fiyero just leaned in, pulling Boq close to him in a soft embrace, "Best I've ever had… I'm afraid you've ruined anyone else for me."
Boq couldn't help the small, surprised laugh that escaped him, "Oh… s-sorry—"
"Don't be…" Fiyero said, so quietly that only Boq could hear him, "Just promise to let me kiss you more often." Boq's heart was doing somersaults and all he could respond with was a nod. "Excellent." Fiyero leaned in and Boq eagerly met him halfway to kiss again. Maybe he'll go to parties more often… with Fiyero, of course.
