More Precious Than Gold

Summary:

"Some food hasn't magically appeared in the fridge, I take it.."
he continued and wasn't exactly surprised when Määnin shook his head.
"Great.. I don't know what I expected. Now, if no one minds, I'm going to die right here."
He sat down on the couch and leaned back until he could feel the back of his head touch the wall. He closed his eyes and thus failed to see Määnin walk up to him, but heard his footsteps and felt the couch dip right next to him.
"There's no food, but I got you something else,"
Määnin told him, sounding all mysterious, and held a little, white box in his hands.

Notes:

Prompt: Gift Giving

"The greatest gift you give to me
Is more precious than gold
Never ended, always mended
And it can't be bought or sold"

Work Text:

Tommy returned home after his shift at Vörå's S-market. Vörjeans still didn't currently have much of anything planned, gig-wise, after their comeback at KAJ on Ice. That of course meant that no money from gigs was actively coming in, and he had to support himself somehow. Of course KAJ had paid them their generous share, but most of that had been donated to charity. Tommy was feeling hungry but knew very well that there was close to nothing in his fridge. After all, last night him and Määnin had eaten the last of the food Marlene had made them. This would mean either running back to do the shopping and actually bothering to try and cook which was something Tommy was not good at, or make yet another run to Grillen. He should have gone before he'd headed home, he knew that. But he couldn't have been bothered. The only thing he wanted to do was get home, take off his shoes and die on the couch, ideally with Määnin by his side.

Tommy dragged himself up to his apartment in the third floor. He was physically in very good shape, but right now each step still felt heavier than the last. The relief he felt as he finally turned the key in the lock was immense. Only a little bit longer and he'd be in his living room, collapsed on the couch and his head hopefully empty of thoughts.
"Welcome home, Toms,"
Määnin greeted him as he kicked off his shoes and left them lying around on the floor.
"Thanks.."
he mumbled and dropped his keys on the desk that was little else than a place where he kept miscellaneous things, some more important than others.
As Tommy opened his eyes, he glanced down and looked at it curiously.
"Got me something..? Why?"
He even sounded a little confused, almost like he couldn't wrap his head around someone buying something for him.
"What is it?"
Tommy kept asking, and that was when Määnin placed the box in his hands.
"Why don't you open it and find out,"
he was told.
"If this is a box of spiders or something, I'm kicking you out.. You can go and crash on Freppa's couch."
The grin on Tommy's face told Määnin that he was joking.

Tommy then went on to slowly open the box, with Määnin's eyes solely focused on his fingers. As soon as he'd opened it, he learned just what Määnin had gotten him.
"A.. mug?"
he asked, confusion sneaking back in. Määnin rolled his eyes behind the sunglasses and said with a softness only reserved for Tommy:
"Take it out of the box, idiot.."
Tommy obeyed. At first glance it seemed like an ordinary, white mug.
"Thanks..? But, why?"
Määnin sighed, took Tommy's hands in his own and turned the mug around.
"It's to replace the mug I broke last year, right before that whole.. rehab business. It's custom made, you see? Freppa helped me place the order,"
Määnin explained and kept looking at Tommy's face. He wanted to see when everything would finally dawn on his at times so simple-minded, even stupid boyfriend. And as Tommy saw the photo on the side of the mug, he recognized it right away, Määnin could see it in the way the look on his face changed. It had been one warm summer day just last year, the three of them had again spent time at the ski jump hill. Tommy and Määnin stood close, arms resting on each other's shoulders. Both of them seemed happy. Well, Tommy had been serious at first, but a sudden, strategic tickle from Määnin had broken the ice. Freppa had taken the photo at that very moment. As a result Määnin was the only one looking at the camera, whereas Tommy had thrown his head back, laughing. His eyes were crinkled and he seemed to be in the middle of trying to catch a breath. Tommy had laughed less and less as he'd gotten older, but he'd laughed that day. Määnin seemed to be able to draw out that happier side of him again. It had been one of the best summers of their lives despite them having spent a lot of time being either drunk or hungover.

"You didn't need to.. It was just a plain old mug. I.. You're more important to me, anyway,"
Tommy mumbled, still holding the mug in a way that could mostly be described as gentle. And for Tommy, that truly was a lot. He could barely take his eyes off of it but tried to pretend like it was no big deal to him.
"Still, because you went through the trouble.. Thanks,"
he added before carefully placing the mug down and turning to face Määnin who said:
"I didn't do this just for the sake of replacing something I broke. I didn't mean to, or want to hurt you that day, either."
Tommy looked serious for a moment, but soon he already had a bright, unashamed smile on his face as he leaned in closer and just about threw himself at Määnin, wrapping his arms tightly around the man who was not only his best friend, but also so much more.
