Work Text:
Fyodor is temporarily on the down low, and so has returned to Russia for a few weeks. Because of his criminal record, he can’t stay in a hotel or another public place as he could be caught, so he is staying with Nikolai instead... It is peculiar, especially the clown decorations, but Fyodor is used to his odd companion’s behaviour at this point.
Nikolai let him have his own room but didn’t promise that Fyodor would wake up in the morning in one piece. Thanks to his ability, this threat did not worry Fyodor at all. Plus, he doubted Nikolai would actually kill him now. It would be far too easy and boring for him.
But after that threat, it makes sense that Fyodor would believe it was Nikolai’s doing when he woke up the next day completely devoid of vision.
“Nikolai!” he called, his Russian accent more profound than usual thanks to the angrier tone. “What have you done to me?”
Nikolai entered the room. “What’s wrong, bestie?”
“Oh, nothing,” Fyodor replied sarcastically. “I have just woken up blind, no big deal,” his voice dropped dangerously. “So tell me what you did to make this happen.”
“Wow! And you immediately accuse me, how tragic! What have I done to deserve this slander? I wouldn’t even hurt a bird!”
“I know that you wouldn’t hurt a bird, but you are certainly more than willing to hurt a human. So tell me what you did and stop teasing.” Fyodor was getting increasingly frustrated at Nikolai’s refusal to admit his involvement. Nikolai’s voice also dropped.
“You say that as if you are human,” he said. Fyodor did not react. “But no matter what you are, I have nothing to do with this sudden blindness, so you can’t get any answers from me, I’m afraid! If you’d like, I could take your hand and guide you everywhere like a dog?”
“I have no interest in you acting like a dog, but your assistance in walking would be appreciated.”
Fyodor sighed in frustration. Now, on top of his anaemia, he would have to deal with being blind with no apparent answer how this happened, and he would also have to deal with Nikolai even more than usual. Fyodor attempted to get out of bed on his own, but then fell over. Nikolai laughed at his misfortune before helping him get up.
“Perhaps this is finally my perfect opportunity to prove my free will by killing you!” Nikolai started. “I could lead you to a ledge and tell you to take a step forward, and you would be none the wiser!”
“I will feel every step before putting my weight on it,” Fyodor replied. Crime and Punishment would allow him to reincarnate if Nikolai tried anything funny, but he didn’t exactly want to have the body of an insane clown man that was weirdly obsessed with him.
Fyodor insisted on seeing a doctor as soon as possible, but Nikolai refused and told him he wanted to spoon-feed him breakfast first. He reluctantly agreed. He wasn’t quite sure what Nikolai was feeding him, but Nikolai assured it wasn’t poisoned. However, he talked about the possibility of him poisoning it. Fyodor felt slightly embarrassed that now he couldn’t even feed himself without assistance, but all this nonsense should be over soon anyway, so he had to suck it up and deal with it.
“Is it a salad?” Fyodor asked.
“Yes! I figured that now your vision is worse than a hamster's, you could eat like a hamster! Maybe I should get you a cage next and bedding... after all, rats and hamsters are close enough, right? Even if you refuse to die, which is the opposite of a hamster.”
“I am not a hamster.”
“You’d be a Russian Dwarf I bet, a white one, probably with those demonic red eyes.”
“Stop talking about hamsters.”
He finally got Nikolai to take him to a doctor, who immediately put his eyes through many tests. Shortly after, the doctor returned and explained what was wrong: Fyodor’s retina was having a stroke. Or, in other words, his retinal artery was blocked.
While Fyodor was being treated, Nikolai insisted on performing the steroid injection himself so he could finally kill Fyodor, which, of course, the doctor did not agree with. After not too long, Fyodor returned with his vision intact.
“Tell me all about it!” Nikolai insisted.
“It was just an injection. They numbed my eye and put a needle in. That was all.”
“Aww, how boring! I wish it were more bloody! But I still want to keep feeding you.”
“Not a chance.”
And with that debacle over, Nikolai and Fyodor returned home.
