Summary:

Two months before adopting his first Robin, Bruce Wayne is trapped in a cycle of guilt and self-destruction as he battles crime as Batman and battles himself as a man. Work Text:

The night was silent in Gotham, but Bruce couldn't find peace. He sat in his office, the dim light of a single lamp casting long shadows across the wood of his desk. A portrait of his parents hung on the wall, their smiles frozen in time—a stark contrast to the torment in his chest. Two months had passed since he first donned the Batman suit, but the weight of failure still oppressed him like a second skin.

That night, he had promised himself he would make Gotham safe. However, failures haunted him. The last mission had been one of the worst. A child had been caught in the crossfire between gangs, and he had arrived too late. The memory of the boy's wide, terrified eyes refused to fade, haunting Bruce in both his dreams and waking hours. What good am I if I can't even save an innocent life? The thought gnawed at him.

A gentle knock startled him from his reverie. "Master Bruce?" Alfred's voice was gentle but firm. He straightened his posture slightly, striving to appear calm. "Come in, Alfred."

The door opened and Alfred entered, his gaze sweeping the room with calculated concern. In his hand, a tray with Bruce's favorite tea—Earl Grey with a touch of lemon. It was a small gesture, but Bruce knew it carried Alfred's silent concern. "I thought you might appreciate a little warmth tonight," said Alfred, placing the tray on the table.

Bruce glanced at the tea, but didn't pick it up. "I'm fine, Alfred. Just... thinking."

Alfred adjusted his tie, his face showing only patience. "Thinking is good, but overthinking usually only leads to more questions. Perhaps it's time to rest."

Bruce's jaw clenched. How could Alfred suggest rest when Gotham was still suffering? "I can't, Alfred. Not yet. Not while there are people out there who need me."

There was a pause, and Alfred's gaze softened. "Master Bruce, you've done more than anyone could ask of you. But even the most resilient man needs to breathe sometimes."

The words struck him deeply, and Bruce looked away, lowering his voice to a whisper. "I'm not sure I still know how to do this."

A heavy silence settled between them. Alfred watched Bruce for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, calmly, he said, "You don't have to resolve everything tonight. Some battles are fought in the heart, not in the streets. And you don't have to fight them alone."

This was the time Alfred came closest to recognizing Bruce's deepest pain—the grief, the guilt, the loneliness. Bruce stared at his tea, his knuckles turning white as he pressed his palms against the table. For a brief moment, he wanted to give in—to lower his guard and confess how lost he felt. But the words failed him. He couldn't afford to show weakness, not now.

“Thank you, Alfred,” he said finally, forcing a calm tone. “I’ll try to remember that.”

Alfred nodded, his eyes lingering on Bruce for another moment before turning to leave. As the door clicked shut, Bruce leaned back in his chair, his fingers brushing the edge of his mother's locket. "I'll get better," he told himself, though the words sounded hollow. Somewhere in the darkness, he knew his journey was only just beginning.
