Work Text:
It was a cloudy November day in Smiling valley, and the local resident unicorn artist was in stardew park, doing what else, drawing in her sketchpad.
She was sketching the outline for a rainbow-colored heart, planning to color it in with her markers which she had in her nearby basket, when she heard someone giggling.
Looking up from behind her sketchpad, she spotted two orange and purple figures on the other side of the hill.
Catnap and Dogday were sitting together in a field of daisies, trying to make flower crowns out of them, but mostly just throwing them at each other, and having fun.
Crafty smiles sadly.
The two had started dating about a week ago, and they were very happy together.
While she felt happy that two of her closest friends had found their soulmates in each other, it was true that she had a little crush on Dogday once upon a time, and felt a bit sad because of it.
Of course, now that he and Catnap had fallen in love, she was completely over it. TOTALLY over it.
Or so she told herself.
Crafty sighs sadly, getting back to her sketching, but when she looked down at the heart, she’d subconsciously drawn and erased a few lines, making the heart look like it was broken in half.
She groans, closing her sketchpad and gathering up her materials.
“I can’t make good art while I'm down in the dumps…”
She says, preparing to head home to put them away.
Maybe a nice walk would get her mind off her feelings…
~A half hour or so later~
Crafty’s walk had led her to the lacquered lake, so now she was sitting on the lakeshore, idly tossing stones into the water, while still trying to forget about her unrequited crush.
Unbeknownst to her, one of her other friends just so happened to be walking by at that very moment.
“Crafty?”
A female voice said, getting the unicorn’s attention.
She looked up to see her closest friend in the group had walked up beside her.
“Oh, hi Bobby.”
Crafty says, smiling a bit. “What’s up?”
“Not much.”
Bobby says.
“I was on my way home, and I saw you looking all sad.”
She sits next to her.
“Is something wrong?”
Crafty sighs.
“It's kinda dumb, but…”
She tosses another stone into the lake.
“I got sad when I saw Catnap and Dogday together… so happy and in love…”
Bobby gently puts an arm around Crafty’s shoulder.
“Aww, don’t say that, it’s not dumb!”
She says. “It sounds like you’re just a bit lonely.”
She smiles. “But there are plenty of other fish in the sea!”
Crafty rolls her eyes.
“Well yeah, but it seems like all the other fish I'd be interested in are hooked.”
She says.
“I mean, Kickin is with Bubba, Simon is with Anna, Hoppy is with Iggy, Picky is with Maggie, and Babs is with Poe.”
She says.
“And even if I was interested in the others, it seems like THEY’RE all taken too…”
She says.
Bobby feels awkward.
“Ah…”
She says. “I see…”
She was silent for a moment.
“Maybe I was just meant to be alone…”
Crafty says, sadly.
Bobby pulls her closer.
“Don’t say that…” she says. “Nobody’s meant to be alone.”
Crafty sniffles.
“I-I know, but… I just don’t know what to do…”
Bobby thinks for a minute or two.
“Say, it’s around lunchtime, how about the two of us go get some food?”
She asks with a smile. “Maybe it’ll help get your mind off things.”
Crafty looks up at her.
“You think so…?”
Bobby nods.
“Yeah!” She says, getting up off the bench. “Come on, my treat.”
Crafty smiles, getting up.
“Thanks Bobby, you’re a peach.”
Bobby giggles. “No problem.”
~train transition~
After taking the train to the city, the two girls had gotten food from Crafty’s favorite restaurant, and were now having a little picnic in Poppyton park.
Crafty was making idle doodles in her sketchbook, while enjoying a slice of Mermaid marshmallow pie.
“So, Crafty, are you feeling better?”
Bobby asks as she eats another honey butter roll.
Crafty nods, smiling.
“A bit.” She says.
“I like spending time with you, Bobby.”
Bobby smiles back.
“I like spending time with you too!”
She says. “You’re really sweet.”
Crafty giggles.
“So are you, Bobby.”
She offers her a bite of pie. “Want some?”
Bobby nods, opening her mouth so Crafty can feed it to her.
“Mmm!”
Bobby says, licking her lips.
“Delicious!”
Crafty nods. “It’s my favorite.”
Bobby smiles. “It suits you, a pie just as, or almost as, sweet as you are.”
Crafty giggles. “Oh you.”
After they were done eating, they decided to cloud gaze together, lying down on the grass.
“That cloud looks like a bunch of balloons!”
Bobby says, pointing to a white cluster of cumulus clouds.”
Crafty nods. “Yeah, and that one looks like a birthday cake!”
Bobby looks. “Oh yeah!” She says with a smile. “A three layer vanilla cake, with sugar icing, sprinkled with sugar on top.”
Crafty’s eyes sparkle. “Ooh, yummy!”
She says.
Bobby points to another cluster of clouds.
“That one kinda looks like two people holding hands.”
Crafty glances over.
“Oh yeah!”
She says.
“Two people, in love, dancing… happy together…”
Her smile fades, and she looks down.
Bobby notices, scooting closer.
“Hey, it’s alright…”
She says.
She gently takes Crafty’s hand, making her blush a bit.
“Until you find your true love, you can always hold my hand!”
She says with a reassuring smile.
Crafty looks at her, smiling warmly.
“Thanks Bobby…”
She says. “You’re the sweetest person I know.”
Bobby scoots closer to hug her.
“You’re welcome!”
The two lie there for another moment or so, cuddling softly.
It had been a pretty good day, and Crafty certainly felt at least a little bit better.
~heart and flower transition~
That night, when Bobby was trying to fall asleep, she couldn’t stop thinking about her unicorn friend.
Every time she closed her eyes, all she could see was her lovely teal shiny hair, her sweet onyx eyes, her bright, shy smile, just everything about her.
Daresay, she had… feelings…?
Bobby jumps out of bed, immediately walking over to her desk.
If she wanted to woo Crafty, she had to start speaking her language.
~the next day~
Crafty was feeling better than yesterday.
After her day with Bobby, she felt a little better.
At least she wasn’t the only one left without love.
She had set up her easel by Stardew point, going at it with her pastels and trying to make an accurate picture of the beautiful sunrise.
She spent the next few hours on the painting, making sure every detail was just as beautiful as the real sunrise.
Suddenly, she hears someone walking up behind her.
She looks, smiling as she sees it’s Bobby.
“Oh hi Bobby!”
She gives a little wave. “Nice to see you again.”
Bobby smiles back. “You too, Crafty.”
As Bobby stepped closer, Crafty noticed she was holding her hands behind her back
.
“I… uh… I made you something.”
Crafty tilts her head. “Oh?”
She says. “What is it?”
Bobby slowly pulls her hands out, revealing It was a bouquet of multicolored paper roses.
Crafty’s eyes sparkle.
“Oh my!” She says, taking them. “They’re so beautiful!”
She gives Bobby a sweet smile.
“Thank you so much!” She says. “These must have taken hours to make…”
Bobby smiles. “It was worth it to see your pretty smile.”
Crafty blushes. “Oh you~”
Bobby then steps closer.
“Crafty… I wanna ask you something.”
Crafty nods, putting the blue rose from the bouquet behind her ear.
“What is it?”
Bobby gently scratches behind her own neck.
“Spending time with you, it made me realize…”
She smiles softly.
“I want to be more than friends with you, Crafty.”
She gently takes her free hoof.
“Will you go out with me?”
Crafty’s face turns pink.
“R-really…?”
She says, stepping a bit closer. “You… want to go out with me…?”
Bobby nods. “Yes… you’re beautiful, sweet and absolutely amazing at art.”
She says. “What more could I want?”
She scratches her neck.
“So… what do you say…?”
Crafty was silent for a moment, then slowly started to nod, a bright smile making its way across her face.
“Yes… yes!”
She says, gently tacking Bobby in a huge hug.
“Of course I'll be yours!”
Bobby laughs happily, hugging back.
“Oh Crafty!”
She says, holding her close. “You’re the most amazing girl in the world!”
The two embraced, happy to stay on the hillside, as long as they were with each other.
~~~
The next day, Crafty starts sketching a blueprint for her newest masterpiece, a full-color painted portrait of her and her sweet new girlfriend.
