Chapter Text

Nico had tried. He really had. But it was never enough. He always failed.

Every.

Fucking.

Time.

The bad thoughts bombarded him as he lay curled on the floor, shaking.

He had stayed for Bianca. She had left him for immortality that she never got to use. He knew why, but he had never quite been able to forgive her for that.

“She never loved you,” the thoughts whispered. “She flew away and never came back, like a bird finally freed from it’s cage.” Nico sobbed.

He’d stayed for his friends, but he had always been too dark. Too weird and creepy. They found him off putting.

“You blew your one chance of ever having friends,” the thoughts told him. Maybe they were right.

He had stayed for Hazel, and she had found a home.

“She doesn’t need you anymore.”

Nico gripped the sleeves of Will’s hoodie harder and-

Will.

He’d stayed for Will, hadn’t he?

“I’m sorry, my Sunshine.” He said between sobs.

He glances at the note pinned on the closet wall. The tears in his eyes prevented him from reading it, and he barely remembered what he’d written. He just hoped it would help.

He stared down at the bottle of pills in his hand. Will had tried to find him a medication that worked, but they all seemed to be useless. He didn’t want to burden Will by needing his help anymore.

Nico uncapped the prescription antidepressants— quite a feat considering how badly he was shaking— and downed a the pills in one go. Maybe he’d be happier in The Fields of Punishment. That was where he belonged, after all.

Nico felt relief as the world went black around him. His friends could move on and stop pretending they loved him.

He would be The Ghost King no longer; just a ghost.
