    This takes place directly after the night club scene, when Ilya and Shane are alone with their thoughts about what just happened.

    He should have stayed that day. The day of the tuna melt. He should have sat down, should have said everything that was on his mind, should have chosen courage over fear. If Ilya had thrown him out afterwards maybe he wouldn’t be feeling so wretched now. Maybe he could feel anger towards Ilya rather than guilt and longing.

    Instead, he’d left and now every ugly, spiraling thought seemed to trace itself back to that moment.

    This was his fault.
